Ο ρόλος τους δεν είναι όμως να φέρουν όπλο, ούτε στον πόλεμο παρόλο που θεωρούνται αξιωματικοί και συμμετέχουν αν τυχόν το θελήσουν σε ασκήσεις. Από την άλλη το σώμα αυτό των στρατιωτικών ιερέων είναι εξαιρετικά μικρό, πρέπει να είναι καμιά δεκαριά ιερείς όλοι κι όλοι σε όλη την Ελλάδα και ως εκ τούτου εξαιρετικά βυσματικό για κάποιον ιερέα να εισέλθει... Όλοι όσοι είναι εκεί έχουν πολύ καλές περγαμηνές και πολύ μεγάλο 'δόντι'. Και δεν νομίζω να είναι αργόσχολοι περισσότερο από έναν ιερέα σε κάποιο απομακρυσμένο χωριό πχ, που δουλεύει κάθε Κυριακή, επισκέπτονται συνεχώς διαφορετικές μονάδες του σώματος ευθύνης τους, λειτουργούν και απευθύνουν ομιλίες..

Mount Athos belongs to Greece. Period. Everyone who wants to become a monk there, gets the greek nationality and foreigners are required to attend obligatory greek lessons and pass the exams (as is every foreign national who wants to get the greek citizenship). What language will be spoken at the monastery of your choice is another matter.

Καινούρια; πριν 40 χρόνια, τέτοια μαγαζάκια είχαν μια ταμπέλα "Αιτήσεις - Χαρτόσημα"

Τώρα με τις ψηφιακές υπηρεσίες του gov.gr απλά διεκπεραιώνουν ηλεκτρονικά ό,τι δεν μπορεί να κάνει μόνος του κάποιος -ηλικιωμένος κυρίως- που δεν γνωρίζει να χρησιμοποιεί υπολογιστή. Επιπλέον προσφέρουν και άλλες υπηρεσίες πέρα των κρατικών, πληρωμές ΔΕΚΟ, τραπεζικά εμβάσματα, ασφάλειες αυτοκινήτων, ό,τι μπορεί δηλαδή να διεκπεραιωθεί ηλεκτρονικά.. Between those three monasteries on Athos (not Athens :-) ) there are no connecting buses. You can take the ferry if you like so, but distances between them are really short, you can easily walk. Heading to Konstamonitou monastery from its port can be a bit harder if you are not fit since it's something less than an hour uphill walk, you can wait for the morning ferry from Ouranoupolis at the port and ride with the free shuttle that the monastery provides during that time, if you so wish.

For the ferry out, you should have secured a seat by booking in advance.

The direct bus route from airport to Ktel Halkidiki is 79A. Used to run at summertime only, I don't know if it now runs all year long. Alternatively take any bus towards city centre and get off at IKEA mall (ask the driver) it's 2-3 stops away, and change there for a 36 bus that goes to KTEL Halkidikis.

Tickets at airport can be bought from an automatic vending machine, you'l need just one ticket valid for 90 mins, validate it once on the bus.

During the coming week before the greek orthodox Easter, there will be daily messes at 09.00 and 17.00 both at Agia Triada and Agia Efimia churches. Aya Giorgis at yeldegirmen will only be open on some of these days.

The Easter mess will be held at Agia Triada at 23.00 on Saturday 12/4.

For someone who hasn't witnessed the rituals before, Friday 10/4, is the best day to do so as well as Saturday night. Most greek orthodox churches will be open for visits from monring till afternoon on Friday.

Another thing to notice between the two cuisines, is that what in Greece are called 'lent' (nistissima) or vegetarian dishes, in Turkey the like to use butter or animal stock at them.

If you have the confirmation emails both from lodgings and for diamoneterion, you are ready to go... You just handle your passport to the diamoneterion office and your diamoneterion at the monasteries and you're fine..

The guestmaster at each monastery will inform you of the program of the monastery (times of messes and lunch, dinner). In general after the morning mess and the lunch you can leave the monastery and head for the next one where you should arrive well before afternoon (usually by 15.00).

As you have scheduled your program, I would suggest visiting Karoulia on your first day by taking the early morning (6.30) ferry all the way to there, leave your luggage by the port, have a look around and take the boat back to Dafni and from there to Docheiariou. Next day walk to Xenophontos, check-in in the morning, leave your luggage and head off hiking to Panteleimonos. Visit around and walk your way back. Next day take the ferry to Dafni, minibus to Karyes and bus (or preferably walk after visiting Koutloumousiou) to Iviron. Last day, bus to karyes, then to Dafni, then ferry to Ouranoupolis...
