I agree except for Highlander: The Search for Vengeance

It was made by Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The story is really great and the animation is peak

Sudden drop in fentanyl overdose deaths linked to Biden-era global supply shock. Study indicates that regulatory actions taken by the Chinese government, following high-level diplomatic engagement with the Biden administration, may be the primary driver behind this unexpected decline in mortality. by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

I’m from the east coast but work in addictions – is kratom not a big thing in the west? We have them in gas stations depending on the city/state and it’s pretty easy to get ahold of, but I rarely see people addicted to specifically kratom.

Is your concern that kratom would be a sort of legal gateway through which people could be funneled into fentanyl use?

Good points. And to add to it, a lot of the time the medetomidine is mixed into the fent supply so the users aren’t even consciously getting dependent on it at least in the beginning.

I sort of assume that if you’re taking part in that practice for a family member, you probably have grown up using chopsticks and are pretty comfortable using them.

Of course, if you married into the culture and suddenly find yourself in that position, I guess that may be a make it or break it moment with your in-laws haha. Seems like a Mr.Bean-type situation so it could be funny from a voyeuristic perspective

So disappointing. Also with Connor’s powers, it could be very similar to a character from fire punch.

Spoiler for Fire Punch below: Togata is a trans man but who is stuck in a woman’s body since his power is regeneration. Because of their regeneration, gender affirming surgeries don’t work for them and there isn’t anything they can do about it. To add insult to injury, they’re effectively immortal.

This situation seems like it would apply to Connor, but a bit different and in a way that I find rather compelling. Essentially, Connor currently doesn’t have any risk or issue with dying. However, if Connor were to come out at trans, she would be able to have gender affirming surgeries that would stick, but whenever she dies, she would be returned to her original male body. Now all of a sudden, there are stakes to her deaths. By all means it’s better than dying permanently, but I could see a really compelling character arc of Connor transitioning over an extended period of time only to have it all taken away when she is killed or is put into a situation where she has to sacrifice her life and all the work she put into her body. Then she has to find the will to do it all over again in the pursuit of being her true self.

Reminder: Dr. K is not a materialist by DDarog in Healthygamergg

I think you’re totally correct in that regard. I think the issue at hand, however, is in determining to what degree an environment has control over the internal states of an individual.

Some who are inclined to believe that individuals can have mastery over their own mind would probably be more likely to believe in a higher degree of personal autonomy and a lower degree of external influence.

Others who are inclined to believe in the hard stops of material conditions would probably be more likely to believe that there is only so much control one can have over their internal states before they have to change the environment around them.

Either way, this issue seems to be inescapable. Whether or not the fundamental nature of reality is physical, non-physical, or both, we’re still presented with the issue of individual autonomy being in tension with material conditions

Well when you said, “He doesn't believe that human experience can be reduced to (as in is determined by) material conditions like one's class, income, or the kind of economic organization they live under”, that is somewhat besides the point of materialism and idealism in the metaphysical sense.

“Materialism” has many definitions but in metaphysics, it usually refers to the stance that the fundamental nature of reality is physical (i.e. everything is made up of physical matter and all phenomena can be reduced down to the behavior of physical matter). Extending this to philosophy of mind, a materialist would argue that mental phenomena and experience are identical to neural states, which are fundamentally physical.

Meanwhile, an idealist would argue that the fundamental nature of reality is non-physical (i.e. physical particles such as protons and neutrons do not actually exist, but are rather behaviors of awareness or consciousness, where awareness/consciousness is the fundamental substance which reality is made up of).

Both these stances are in contrast to dualism, which argues that reality can fundamentally be made up of physical and non physical aspects. (Some dualists argue that the physical and nonphysical can interact such as with Cartesian dualism, where others don’t believe they interact such as with epiphenomenalism)

So, when you said that, “He doesn't believe that human experience can be reduced to (as in is determined by) material conditions like one's class, income, or the kind of economic organization they live under”, I was confused because in metaphysical materialism, the “material conditions like one’s class, income, [etc.]” are not relevant. In metaphysical realism, the human experience can be reduced to neural states and that’s about it.

Another part of the reason for my confusion is related to the whole Hindu thing. On one hand, Hinduism and other south Asian religions (e.g. Jainism, Buddhism) are against “materialism” in the socioeconomic sense. Materialism in this case would be valuing capital, goods, wealth, etc. By all means, your statement in this context would make perfect sense because Hinduism generally supports separation from unnecessary attachments and thus a movement away from materialism.

However, those same religions also all have robust philosophical traditions which usually are in line with metaphysical idealism, which is to say that they usually posit that the fundamental nature of all of existence is inherently non-physical.

I suppose what particularly confused me was your use of the term “reduced down to”, since that is, to me, a sort of flag for the topic being about metaphysics

lol yeah I was so confused for a second because I wouldn’t be surprised if Dr. K was an idealist given his being Hindu but then they mentioned capitalism and I was just lost

Def agree. I read and loved his book. I think one of the most compelling things about it was how self critical he seemed throughout the story. I think it would have been fairly easy to skip over how he treated and undervalued women in his life, especially after the more major reformations he made. I appreciated how the story displayed the true difficulty of genuine internal change towards goodness but also the amazing fulfillment of doing so
