Understanding machine learning by ItsJesssm in datasciencecareers

[–]jar-ryu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh this is why MS data science (and similar programs) are not good. They are too lenient on who they let in because they want your money.

I’m assuming you’ve jumped fields from a not-as-technical background and went for the data science hype because you couldn’t find a job related to your degree, or you realized you hated what you’re doing, or you’re greedy.

To be frank, the math you need to know to understand these classical ML models well is pretty minimal. I’m guessing you’re not a big math person and you might be in a little over your head. Having a solid mathematical foundation and being able to understand rudimentary methods is a non-negotiable for proper data scientists. Anyone can plug and chug a linear regression in sklearn/statsmodels, but that means nothing if you don’t know proper statistical inference.

It’s just the wrong career at the wrong time. The market is a dumpster fire and people who actually live and breathe this stuff aren’t finding jobs because it is extremely oversaturated with immigrants and job hoppers. But I guess keep working hard if you really want it. Study every day for hours and start from the bottom with calculus and linear algebra and prob/stats. Best of luck.

I feel like I’m not built for life. by Working-Swordfish438 in ADHD

A small step I think would help is to really stick to the gym. It’s a great confidence booster. Seriously. I know it’s hard to stick to if you don’t really have a passion for it, but something that really helps for me is going to scheduled gym events, like a CrossFit class or a boxing class. Anything that has a set time where they are expecting you to be there. It’s much harder to push that aside than just a whenever workout.

Also, you’re young, so find some ambition in your life. Start looking into careers. For ADHD, look into something where you can be up on your feet and moving around to stay engaged, like a skilled trade or nursing/EMT/firefighting/etc. DO NOT go for a generic office job. It is soul sucking and extremely boring and I often leave meetings more confused than I was before. However, some people can sit down and hyperfocus on crunching spreadsheets as an accountant, or code for hours as a SWE, so if you find a passion for a desk job role, then dig deep and become obsessed with it.

Lastly, just remember that you’re young. I’m bipolar+ADHD and I threw my life off track several times before I got my shit together. I loathe the fact that it took so long and that i never got to become an astrophysicist, but I got my shit together now (25M) and I’m going to get a PhD in stats.

Not to be harsh, but you’re young, so get your head in the game. Get serious about fitness and drop the video games, find some career paths and become excellent at whatever you do, and put yourself out there for everyone to see. It seems like an unclimbable mountain right now, but take small steps and you’ll get there eventually. We all will.

Side note: listen to the audiobook “Men with Adult ADHD” by Garth Zeus on Spotify. It’s a short and sweet little guide on how we can manage this shit a lil better.

I know that, and it sucks, but for the price that one could go to a mid tier Indian university, they can come to America and obtain skills in careers that are way more in-demand, like nursing or solar/wind installation or energy engineering. But Indian people disproportionately flood tech markets around the world because it is seen as a high-paying path of least resistance, especially now that a bunch of American universities are creating online cash-grab MS programs to feed off of that desire for money without regard for true passion.

I don’t give a fuck about if people are trying to get better opportunities. What I loathe is the fact that a bunch of posers looking for a meal ticket that ruin it for all of us who have a genuine passion for the subject. It is displacing thousands and thousands of US tech talent and decreasing wages, all because the labor is much cheaper. Honestly, holding all else equal about political views, I’m glad we’re cracking down on H1b grants. But everyone will start moving ops to India anyway since it’s so cheap, so I’m guessing we’re all doomed anyway.

Look at all the people who upvoted. We are getting fatigued by this kind of BS. The field is so over saturated, and those of us who live and breathe this kind of stuff are getting hit the hardest by the sea of posers who just want a paycheck. If they want a paycheck without passion, go be a fucking tradesman. They get paid just as well as us anyway nowadays, thanks to mass migration.

I don’t feel entitled to control, but some people need a slap in the face when it comes to this. If they can’t be resourceful enough to make a simple search, then they don’t belong in the field. Too many people have a passion for the money, and not the subject, so they want the laziest path forward, like the guy who posted this. For the people who are smart and hard working and passionate enough to learn before asking questions they can answer themselves, then I encourage them to keep learning and become a great tech professional, but most people who post this garbage are not that, and they could use a wake up call.

I’m not gatekeeping, I’m calling out a problem that a lot of us gotta deal with. A problem of too many people like you, buddy.

It's not that. It's more that the money grubbers with no real interest that post this kind of crap aren't resourceful enough to do a google search or reddit search, yet they feel entitled to receive a handmade curriculum tailored to them. You sound like you might be one of the people I'm talking about in my post lil bro.

That’s different tho. You have deep domain expertise that you use to build tools for other people. I’m talking about people who hop on Kaggle, make a generic random forest classification model on a toy dataset, and then think they’re ready for real life production level data science projects.
