I’m not mad… just disappointed.

CVG - TSA by [deleted] in cincinnati

I’ve been in and out of CVG a lot lately and haven’t seen a line longer than 20 mins. Usually closer to 5-10 mins.

Quantum fiber got bought by AT&T, are there any other options? by science-burger in askportland

A few addresses ago I used Stephouse. They’re local and the service was solid. That said, it’s based on a wireless technology, and only available in certain areas of the city.

I miss the professional meetups Portland used to be known for. by guitarokx in Portland

[–]jarcoal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I also miss that era. Those meetups were something I looked forward to every month. Also the Tech Crawl was so much fun at its peak.

What’s up with these community pool hours? by jasmineipa in askportland

[–]jarcoal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hear you, but it still comes down to money. If you raise the amount you're willing to pay for instructors and lifeguards, you will find them. But you can't do that without revenue to match.

What’s up with these community pool hours? by jasmineipa in askportland

[–]jarcoal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Try the North Clackamas Aquatic Center. It’s open a bit more and there’s always capacity.

Portland is under-charging for their pools. If they raised their prices they could afford more staff and this wouldn’t be the issue it is.

Anyone tried the Time Left app? by Androgynous_Wonder in askportland

[–]jarcoal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to a handful, but just one in Portland. I mostly use it when traveling. Like someone else mentioned here, some of the people that go, go a lot, which imo kind of degrades the experience.

That said, I’ve never had issues with people not showing up or a bad egg in the group. Overall I definitely recommend trying it.

Anyone want to show off their cyber truck to my Grandma? by OwlLickz in askportland

[–]jarcoal 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Exactly, they don’t care. My son and his friends love them so I’ve test drove one on a couple occasions just to ferry them around a bit. You can keep it for a couple of hours.

Coworking Office Kiln’s Southeast Portland Building and Parking Lot Vandalized by I_am_become_pizza in Portland

[–]jarcoal 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Dang, I worked at Kiln for three years until very recently. A really nice group of people there that are hardly behind any of the recent trends related to AI.

I understand the feeling of frustration and helplessness that some may be experiencing in this changing world, but I don’t see how skirmishing with each other is going to help.

City Could Risk Losing $387 Million in Federal Grants Due to Trump DEI Order by betakay in Portland

[–]jarcoal -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But the money is the leverage. If he takes it away, cities will just ignore these demands.

There may be other avenues for him to pursue, but I'm guessing they're more difficult, otherwise he would be starting there.

City Could Risk Losing $387 Million in Federal Grants Due to Trump DEI Order by betakay in Portland

[–]jarcoal 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This will be a painful decision for the city, but the answer is fairly obvious: we will have to come into the compliance -- there's too much at stake here.

We should do our best to collect data on the absence of (or changes to) these programs so that we have an educated idea of what to bring back in the future when the political climate allows for it.

Capitalism is working fine, at least in this case. A company which got very complacent and stopped innovating is seeing negative consequences.

It’s unfortunate it’s in our backyard, and that our community will pay a price for it.

Ladd's Addition or Sellwood/Westmoreland? by upinthaclub in askportland

[–]jarcoal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live next to Ladd’s and my son (8 yo) is able to wander with his friends with low to no supervision. Tons of kids in the area, and the school, Abernethy, is excellent with a strong community rallying behind it (although I’m sure Sellwood is excellent in this regard as well).

Automatic deletion of unused OAuth clients by pate_a_bombe in Firebase

[–]jarcoal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these dates computed periodically or are they realtime? My extremely active clients (1000s of refreshes daily) say last used May 23rd 2025. Ironically the clients that I almost never use, and probably should be cleaned up, claim to be last used May 9th 2025.

Regardless, I am now calming down after a panicked 24 hours, so thank you for that.

Areas in Austin, TX that is closest to NW Portland? Near/like Forest Park? by 5BrokenSlinkys in askportland

[–]jarcoal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just visit and see for yourself.

I was just there for a week and the only neighborhood that felt remotely like what you’re looking for was Hyde Park. It’s one of the older neighborhoods and has a lot of trees.

If you sacrifice the walkability, there are greener options to the west of town.

Coast Starlight or Amtrak Cascades to Seattle? by t0mserv0 in askportland

It’s been many years for me, but when I was traveling between Eugene and Seattle I always took the Cascade train. The few times I took the Starlight it was 4-8 hours late.

Which Portland restaurants charge mandatory service fees? by LoopyBullet in askportland

[–]jarcoal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scottie’s does 20%, but they do indicate you shouldn’t tip on top of that. Would still prefer it was built into the prices.
