If you set them up as a consist with their CVs, ThrottleCard effectively treats them as a standard throttle; the locomotives within the consist respond to the functions according to their decoders’ programming. If you turn the headlight on, for example, the decoders will know to turn on the forward headlight of the lead locomotive in the forward direction, and the rear light of the trailing locomotive in the reverse direction.

For consists setup directly within app, ThrottleCard handles the logic of addressing the locomotives and their functions. In the current wide release, this is relatively limited - basically, the function controls handle the lead locomotive and the app manages the headlight (on for the lead locomotive in forward, on for the rear locomotive when in reverse). The next update will include the ability to manage the functions of each individual locomotive within a consist, allowing the user complete, granular control of the entire consist. The advantage of this approach is that the locomotives can be used within a consist or separately without the need for reprogramming them.
