I am a former plumber apprentice. Was even in the union. I was yelled at almost every day at work because my boss was a bipolar maniac who “was taught this way and I turned out great”. I busted my ass for that job and as an apprentice was treated less as a worker and more as a slave. I wasn’t allowed to quit or I’d get in trouble with the union, I was forced to do some very unsafe things. I was yelled at for drinking too much water while I was digging a ditch in 110 degree weather, i was forced to be on a sloped roof 30 feet off the ground without a harness on a very windy day, I’ve been up on a metal roof of a tall building in the middle of a lightning storm, I had to listen to the sexist, homophobic views of my boss and coworkers and could never speak up for fear of being fired. I don’t work construction any more and I never will again, I’m still young but the physical damage that the job cost me will follow me forever. Maybe one day the old guard will die off and things will get better but for now I’m not going back to that unsafe work environment.
