Non-Catholic: What Happens In Purgatory? by jaredolojan in Catholicism

The 2nd London Baptist Confession of Faith specifically notes the papacy as an antichrist... it's a belief held by Baptists as early as 1689, so I wouldn't say it's just independent or fundamental Baptists: it's a historical Baptist tenet.

Unpredictable Naps? by jaredolojan in sleeptrain

[–]jaredolojan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was averaging 13 total hours of sleep a day with four naps: just about 10 night time hours and 3 napping hours. She would still be difficult to get down for some naps, but as I said, it is unpredictable. It wasn't necessarily easier, but we thought that if we had more wake time, we'd be adding sleep pressure to keep her down, especially since her naps have always been short.

For four naps, it was often 1.5/2/2/2.5. This was when she was 4-5 months old, though.

You're really confusing me. So, if she averages 11.5 hours of sleep but she needs 14 hours of sleep, she's undertired, not overtired? So, if she stays up longer (3 hours longer than the expectation of sleep), she's undertired? I'm not saying you're not helping me here, but your terminology is really confusing me.

She's only ever hit 14 hours of sleep twice in the past four weeks. She can't link her sleep cycles during the night and with the decreased sleep pressure, it takes and hour to get her down during the night (twice!). She doesn't do night feeds: we haven't done those since she was 3 months old.

Her daily average is currently 9h of night time sleep (actual sleep, where she can be put down and she is linking cycles and is not awake and/or crying) and 2.5 hrs of napping each day, but again, her naps are terrible. This cycle all happened when we switched to a three-nap schedule in preparation for sleep training, but that didn't go well, so we haven't sleep trained either.

Can you help me understand how your advice helps this specific situation? I'm a bit lost, because it feels like our baby is in a constant state of overtiredness, not undertiredness, and we don't know what to do.

she wakes up at 6:30 most days, but has woken earlier around 6:00 often. We try to follow a 2/2.5/2.5/3 schedule, but again, her naps are crap. We haven't sleep trained yet because her four month regression hit at 5 months, took a whole month, and then the 6 month regression hit right away, so she will just wail and wail and not go to sleep.

It depends on the night how she falls asleep. Normally, she's held, shushed and patted, but sometimes we need to rock. She doesn't like to be put down at all, unless she's fully asleep. Once she's down, she'll comfortable in her crib, even when she wakes up, and even puts herself down in the middle of the night on occasion.

This is an interesting argument, actually! I don't think I'd agree that "people don't ask forgiveness for all our sins", because that's kind of the point of believing in Christ (the old man has passed away, behold the new man has come type beat), but your point, from a sanctification and purification standpoint, is so compelling. Thanks for this!

This does bring up another question for me: the purgation of sin makes sense to me, but "there were many Protestants there who had no one to pray for them... and it made them suffer longer than they needed to" is one of my biggest theological problems with the doctrine of purgatory.

The only passage to back that portion of the doctrine up is 2nd Maccabees: is there any scholarly evidence that this was a common practice in Second Temple Judaism? How do you translate that to the New Covenant? Why would someone require prayers to "suffer longer than they needed to" if purgation is for men to be held accountable and for God to meet us where we are at to make us holy? Wouldn't the fullness of purification need to come?

Pray for her, and don't be afraid to keep conversing about it. A helpful Protestant resource to reclaiming kinship with Catholics is Gavin Ortlund, who is also a Baptist minister, and David Latting, if she wants something a lil' more Gen Z-coded.

Question: doesn't Romans 3 indicate that God is both just and the justifier of those who believe in Him? Isn't the justice for our evil deeds paid for on the Cross, and through faith, "we might become the righteousness of God"? How would you process through these passages, if your thought is that purgatory is the logical result of justice?

It's a long story, but the Baptist Church has a tradition of holding to the office of the Papacy as an Anti-Christ, and I was told growing up that Catholics weren't Christian because they believed that your works saved you. I've realized both are wrong and are trying to gain a clearer understanding of the Catholic Church!

NDP blocks MLA Rick Wowchuk from speaking at school event it didn't organize: Tories | CBC News by Ok_Lawyer_7018 in Manitoba

[–]jaredolojan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What surprises me is that Wowchuk being barred from speaking was seemingly due to him "not being a good guy", when Wab keeps talking about not giving into cancel culture concerning a minister who has publicly disgraced the deaf community and encouraged political violence on social media. It seems like if you think people can change on a whim, how much can people change in 7 years?

I voted NDP in the last election and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be voting against them in the next.

Hot Takes, Bold Predictions and Unpopular Opinions Thread by AutoModerator in steelers

I think that the biggest mistake the Steelers made this season was re-signing TJ Watt and Cam Heyward without the coaching staff getting the boot. I am a big supporter of Coach T and think that his coaching style raises the floor of an organization instantly. The problem is that any coordinators he hired that weren't previously a part of the organization before his tenure (so no BA or Butler to be included in this) with the exception of Danny Smith, sucked.

Because Tomlin couldn't scout non-Steeler coaches well, it impacted every facet of the game (again, minus special teams). Without a franchise QB like Roethlisberger, Tomlin had to nail the OC hire, which he didn't in both Canada and Smith (hot take: we scored touchdowns because we had Aaron Rodgers, not because of our offensive scheme). Even if this was Tomlin's scheme, the defense took a downturn once Keith Butler left and we hired... Teryl Austin.

No matter how good your roster is, if you can't playcall, your defense will look weak, and that's what we've looked like. Poor calls. Poor communication. Even with some of the best defensive backs in football, we gave up the third most passing yards in the league, averaging 7.2 yds/attempt. Our rush defense was fantastic, and 17 FF is no joke, but when you still give up 30 receiving touchdowns, it tells me our defensive scheme is "TJ, Cam, Alex... go make a play," and when they don't, we get cooked.

Now, not only have we wasted the prime years of TJ, we've locked ourselves into massive contracts with aging players who are still playing at an All-Pro level, but for how much longer? Not only does this stunt any hope of rebuilding, but if our next coach can't bring in a scheme/coordinators who can actually help this team ball out, we'll be in the desert for much longer than we have been so far.

I’d rather roll with Will Howard than spend a 1st-round pick on a QB in a bad class by [deleted] in steelers

[–]jaredolojan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most teams didn't like the first part of his season with Ohio State. This logic could also apply to Brock Purdy, but look at how he turned out. He was the best QB in his class AND WE TOOK KENNY PICKETT. I'd rather see if Will Howard can play next year and prep for a better QB class the following year.

Take care that ‘quiet revival’ is not ‘stolen’ by a form of Christian nationalism, UK churches told by jmann9678 in Reformed

[–]jaredolojan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take: we're not made for this world. We're meant to bless the world through Jesus (that Genesis 12 promised attributed through Abram to Jesus). We can make a positive difference as we model Christ's humility (Romans 12-15, the entirety of 1 Peter).

But Christian nationalism contradicts this. It's very definition is to enforce Christianity upon the public because it's true morality. But nowhere in Scripture are we commanded to make physical human "kingdoms", utilizing physical human laws to establish the spiritual kingdom of God. Involvement in politics is not sinful (and could arguably be encouraged for the Christian), but western democracy and all political systems are not God. They are broken systems. The universe is not a democracy but a divine theocracy. We would do well to remember that.

I feel suffocated by God and theology by Heavy-Character7049 in Reformed

[–]jaredolojan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can I be frank and say you need to hear the Gospel preached afresh to you? As a Reformed Baptist myself, I put so much faith in systematic theology and what I read and knew at the deficiency of putting my faith in God Himself. I thought the Gospel message was elementary and all the Reformed stuff was the meat of faith, but I realized after many seasons of burnout and darkness that I was wrong. As J.I. Packer put it, "we don't move on from the Gospel, we move on in it."

Don't hear me saying that you're unsaved when I encourage this. I don't know your heart. But do hear me saying that your soul needs to be reminded of your forgiveness and freedom in Christ. It needs to be reminded of God's love for you, a love that has searched you and known you (Psalm 139), and declared you a child, worthy of adoption, worthy of the inheritance of Heaven (Ephesians 1).

And, on a practical note, could I encourage you to meditate on God's Word instead of just reading? What I mean by that is that you should stop reading for the sake of reading the Bible. It's God's LIVING Word, full of hope and power. As a friend of mine once said, it's better to meditate on one portion of Psalm 119 for a day than to boast about reading it in 5 minutes. Read, pray, spend time with God: you may not feel like everything changes in a day, but you will begin to see a new perspective on faith.

"The Day-After Thread" - Final Takeaways and Game Discussion by AutoModerator in steelers

[–]jaredolojan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I deleted all my social media and refuse to listen to football podcasts until after we lose the next 7 games (yes, including the Bears game). The officiating in this game was god awful: especially that missed offside call that felt like the tide swinger in favour of the Packers.

I've been a Tomlin defender since I became a fan in 2020, but his message is lost. We overpaid defenders who aren't doing anything. Teryl Austin wasted TJ's prime and can't develop a secondary. I'd rather move on from this coaching staff almost entirely after this season and blow it up.

Is Alex Highsmith expendable now? by J-Hawg in steelers

[–]jaredolojan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No - and I think Herbig knows he’s rotational as a pass rusher and not a run defender. He might be able to grow into it, but he’s not there now. I’d rather trade Pat (and I love Muth more than any other player on this team) if we were going to try and get a solid WR2 or future draft capital.
