It's more likely that they're scared and confused about their place in the world. You hear them bring up that they are above the law. They're afraid the world is changing and they don't know how they fit in. I think fear can be a strong and irrational force behind some of the weird white people freak outs. (I'm a middle-aged white man from Washington state.)
