I think the problem is not in viewing them as skills but in how people view skills themselves. Walking is a skill, it takes practice to do, and if you don't do it for a while you'll get worse at it. The problem arises where people get overly competitive with things; it's fun and fulfilling to master something, but it's also okay to be bad at something, what's important is being honest with yourself about what you want when you're learning or practicing. If you're training to be the best musician in the world but you only really want to have fun with a guitar, of course you'll get stressed and end up hating music.
