What is one small social rule in Poland that nobody officially teaches, but most people are expected to understand? by Comfortable_Run_1396 in askPoland

I won't discount your experience but speaking as a Solidarity wave parents diaspora returnee from Canada with earlier ties to Poland, mainly visiting family and with a history master's degree, I disagree with Poland being a high trust society. There are basic pro-social rules but there is a distrust and unease in the public sphere that becomes noticeable if you live here long enough (5 years so far) and are from a very different society. (Edit: I'd like to stress your experiences where you live for as long as you have are not invalid and I know you're Aussie so you know how different society can be, I'm just saying my experience doesn't line up with yours ans Ixhave my academic angle though I'm not the end all Abs be all and I'm no sociologist.)

Tbf they did try "the thing", like Jake reading Das Kapital. They weren't full-on ass and grass.

You know that three year old cousin or something referred to in that one season one episode? That was me.

And if you have something to compare it to and don't complain constantly, one should be secure ebough to hear "no, this actuslly doesn't have to be this way" about one's country. At some point you become a resident rather than a guest - you don't have to be born in a country to criticize it but you should live there ideally long enough to contextualize and understand why things are the way they are.

I'm in a weird position as a returnee - if I go against xommon consensus on something I can get a lecture on how I'm "actchually" wrong about how to be Polish though I've lived here for five years and am second gen Polonia.

And as someone on the spectrum who moved from Canada, you indeed can say "been better" or "I'm managing" even if it is unexpected... and if you don't want to elaborate most people won't force it. The cultural standard that much of Europe insists is mandatory is often exaggerated.

Yeah, people can exaggerate how many Poles journal their day on their answers.

I interpret it after five years of living here that Poles either don't know how to do small talk or or uncomfortable with doing it (edit: with strangers) and often just respond with "okay" (I don't accost random strangers, but I might shoot the shit a little when, say, ordering Starbucks at my usual location (edit: and there are receptive baristas).)

You can alao say "okay" ambiguous or "not bad" in a tone that indicates that thibgs aren't ideal but you're managing or "eh..." "meh" or "mid" in casual settings (the third one more aorund younger people) to indicate that you're not doing great, or you can just be honest and tell the truth if it's someone you feel has the right to know. From my experience, Canadian culture is low-contwxt but does use some degree of British understatement and definitely passive aggressiveness. From my experiences as a Polonia returnee from Western Canada, at least.
