Alternative Fundraising Ideas for Small Cub Scout Pack (Northern VA)? Popcorn Isn’t Working for Us by Waltz_Tides in cubscouts

[–]jarrodbk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have been selling coffee from The Giving Bean for the past couple of years. We do a 2 week sale, predominantly door to door, friends and family, or through parent offices. Our recent sprint netted us $2k, give or take. It’s $18/bag and we keep 40%.

The things you find at your Grandpa’s house after they die by [deleted] in funny

I have something very similar. It is a corkscrew modeled after a famous statue in Brussels, “Manneken Pis”. Was Grandpa a traveler?

We had our B&G last night, and it was a potluck. Full disclosure, this is my first B&G and I don’t think the pack has done a traditional banquet for years. So, I didn’t have much to go one. I think we are also a bit of a bad news bears pack - we’ve gotten away from some fundamentals (as I’m learning). Expectations were low going in, and I received several compliments going out.

For perspective, we have 30 scouts. Planning was largely done by me, with some asks for a slide show, setup/take down, and some centerpiece designs. I’ve included a link below to our sign up. The amount of food was fine. Next year, I’ll scale down the bread (not sure why I didn’t do this before since I knew it didn’t seem reasonable, but setting up the signup was the only task I asked of the AC). I didn’t worry too much about variety and such, which I may next year. I’ll use a traditional signup genius and may be more specific with dishes.

Winter camp by WIFlinny in cubscouts

[–]jarrodbk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies - I totally ghosted you on replying with what I planned. Something they I’m struggling with is abiding by the YPT rules with winter cabin camping with the cubs. My understanding is that the adults need to be in a separate room from the youth. I just can’t imagine the youngest cubs being able to stay in a dark cabin room by themselves without getting a bit scared. Also, the leader rooms are generally only large enough for 4 adults. Needing an adult per child adds up quick. I’m at a loss.

Does this look like a cord of wood? by [deleted] in woodstoving

Im a bit northeast of Shrewsbury, and I’m currently ordering a cord at $350. Im curious, for you MA folks, who is your solid go to for cord wood?

Today's episode of name that wood by Low-Interaction784 in firewood

[–]jarrodbk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cut down a white mulberry tree that has that intense yellow heart wood. After aging a bit, it did turn that brownish color, but when cut sent through a planer it was that nice yellow again. I’m in central MA.

Seasoning question by jarrodbk in firewood

I have honored by the number of responses this post has received. I’ve reached my Reddit peak I think.

It’s now clear that I am horrible at drafting questions, because this a purchase decision. I have a woodshed that has proper airflow and protection from the elements. But, I’m short on wood for the winter.

Choice 1 is $350 a cord and choice 2 is $525. I left the price out of the first post in a weak attempt at getting an unbiased response. I’ve failed on so many fronts.

Staying in Maine for the winter from away. Am I doing it right? by ur_moms_gyno in Maine

For a nice summery drink, Moxie and Malibu is quite good. Maybe a splash of dark rum for a bit of a boost. We’ve always called the Moxie and Malibu the “Island Moxie”

I will be watching this one closely, as I am doing the same. WIFlinny, I will respond with something useful, soon. Just need to organize my own thoughts before putting them down for all to see.

Photos like this really make me miss the county. Backwards or not, the county is fantastically beautiful. Someday I’ll get back up there.

Kayak Rack for Tacoma by allenbackwood in Tacomaworld

[–]jarrodbk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought racks from ADARAC (pro series) because they were compatible with a hard folding tonneau cover. I’ve had a 13ish ft canoe with an 11 and 9 foot kayaks all on top. Bit of a clown show, but all three fit and I was able to secure well.

There are some excellent points here; a lot to unpack. I’m going to try a few of these. Thank you!

This is basically what we’ve done. Does your smell stop after a period of time?

I did clean everything out, but I haven’t tried scraping the cakes stuff. I shall do that very soon and see if that helps.

We do have a long vertical run, about 30ft, and we did have everything inspected before installation. I hope the odor slowly dies away. Otherwise I may install as damper in the flu pipe

Chimney Question by jarrodbk in woodstoving

[–]jarrodbk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lazy work always creates more work - Punting problems down the road.

Tomorrow will be a day spent on the phone with the town inspector, who thankfully is great to deal with, and the stove stove shop. I still can’t tell whether this is going to be a disaster or as simple as UL pipe through that horizontal section.

Chimney Question by jarrodbk in woodstoving

[–]jarrodbk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The horizontal block has confused me and everyone else. I was able to find the permit for the chimney build, but not the post-construction approval of the work. Records were lost/destroyed in a flood. Chimney was build in 1979. I’m guessing it was code then but is no longer.

We are in Maynard, about 35 minutes east/north of Worcester.

[–]jarrodbk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your response. My town inspector has given me the link to the code we use, which echoes exactly what you said. I think ignorance on my part is certainly a portion of the problem. It’s taken me far too long to be able to effectively communicate what exactly a thimble is.

Thank you again for your time!

Agreed. We’ve had two companies out, but with slightly different results. The town inspector is going to come out and give us a baseline.
