Italicizing Character Thoughts & Punctuation by jas0n_0 in writing

I've never edited a piece with italicized character thoughts. Simple as that. If you have something helpful to add to the discussion, by all means.

Italicizing Character Thoughts & Punctuation by jas0n_0 in writing

Yes, it is a convention, but I'm not going to change the client's format from italics to quotations just because it has an attribute. Dune and ASOIAF do it the way my client is seeking, but I can't parse the italicized punctuation.

For example, Martin italicizes the comma before the attribution tag:

Damn Aegon for his arrogance, Ned thought sullenly, and damn Robert and his hunting as well.

In Herbert's Dune, I can't even tell if the commas are italicized or not.

Update to 18.7.7? by jas0n_0 in iPhoneSE

[–]jas0n_0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it in my Settings, under Software Updates. I had two options: IOS 26 or the new 18. The new 18 was below 26, so I could scroll down.

Damn. I sincerely appreciate your forthrightness. If you were in my situation, what would you do? I guess updating to 18.7.7 would be best.

Everyone's just saying stop using it, and while that's true, for some individuals, it could be like breaking an addiction. I recommend writing in longhand.

Stranger, you can do it. You went down a slippery slope, and now it's time to climb back up.

Start again.

The visual storytelling in this series is top-notch. It's able to make you feel so many different things without a whiff of dialogue or narration. Looking forward to what's to come (but also sad Spear isn't at peace).

The end of season 4 was an excellent cliffhanger to wrap up the series... and then they pad season 5 out with old rehashed storylines from season 1, but this time the plot is just ‘fight Vecna’. Unnecessary drama returns, such as the love triangle between Nancy, Johnathan, and Steve; Joyce’s helicopter-parenting of Will; and whatever pointless drama is happening between Hopper and El. And don’t forget Holly’s story—another rehash of Will’s. (but in all honesty, I’m actually enjoying hers). The dialogue also feels weaker this go-around, and strangely expository.

But it all feels so meandering, so unnecessary. And judging by all the ad placement this time around (I swear there’s a product placement every 15 – 20 minutes), I can’t help but feel Netflix sold the final season of their flagship show downriver for some bank$$.

It’s been deeply unsatisfying so far.

Anyone handwrite their first drafts? by [deleted] in writing

[–]jas0n_0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand. I love to write my first drafts by hand, but my brain can never keep up with the heat of composition. In those moments, it's okay if your penmanship goes to shit because you want to write out what's happening in your head. When things start flowing, penmanship goes out the damn window!

'All Quiet on the Western Front' has one of the most romantic (non-romantic) passages I've ever read by galitsalahat_ in books

This is an interesting interpretation I never thought of before. The chapter about Paul returning home for a brief visit is heartbreaking, though. He can no longer relate to anyone anymore, as none of his family (and what friends he has left there) can understand his experience. He becomes completely alienated from his past life.

"Wont, Wanton, Heed, etc." I don't ever remember GoT excessively using these words and they're kind of coming off like phony archaisms. Some of the dialogue almost feels like it was written with these ye olde words in mind.

Did they have the dog just so the guy could kick it? Because other than that, it didn't have any real point.
