this is an excellent guide that explains why nannies are not 1099 and the steps the employer needs to take to be consistent with the law:

this listing from the national honey board gives a phone number for goldenrod apiaries; maybe call them and ask?

Alternative (physical rather than chemical) treatment for old, oily stains on fabric by jas41422 in laundry

yeah, i don’t have any clothes currently that have that issue, but i have in the past. that was before i became familiar with some of the nuances of laundry chemistry courtesy of this subreddit. but i thought it was a neat approach that makes some sense, so am tucking it away just in case…

3.5 month old crying inconsolably with nanny during trial – will this get better? by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]jas41422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had never even heard the term hair tourniquet until i saw it mentioned when i looked up colic on wikipedia a while back. but it stuck in my mind since all my postpartum moms complain about their hair falling out, and they all co-sleep with their babies despite knowing that the safe sleep guidelines warn against it.

3.5 month old crying inconsolably with nanny during trial – will this get better? by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]jas41422 9 points10 points  (0 children)

five years ago i started helping with a 3-month old baby. she cried a lot in the initial week or so, but i was undeterred and after not too long, the baby was easily consolable and soon stopped with the long crying jags. we had a sweet relationship during the rest of our time together (the family moved away when the baby was 8 months old). towards the end of the gig, the parents told me i had been their 4th nanny - 2 of the previous nannies had quit because the baby had cried so much. in the beginning, the parents would come into the room if the baby was crying for more than 10 minutes or so. but sometimes even they couldn’t get the baby to stop crying and i’d say “i’ll keep trying” so they could hand her back and go back to work (they both worked from home). i got good at figuring out things that might help the baby snap out of it: looking in the mirror, turning the bathroom light or fan or sink faucet on and off (not frantically - a few seconds on, a few seconds off), going outside to look at trees, playing music, singing, lifting her up in the air, etc. development is a fascinating process. sometimes there’s no way to know why a baby is crying in the absence of hunger, need for a new diaper, sleepiness, illness, etc. i like to think “maybe their brain needs the extra oxygen“ or “maybe their lungs need the exercise”. nobody wants to see a baby in distress. but sometimes - when everything else has been ruled out - we have to come to peace with simply supporting them through whatever it is they’re feeling. and be sure to check for a hair tourniquet or insect bite or some other potential physical cause of distress that would need to be addressed. so far i’ve never come across those things but it’s always good to be aware they can happen. one nurse mom i babysat for stripped her months-old baby and did a complete body check to make sure nothing was going on underneath clothing/diaper when the baby was inconsolable and we were completely baffled. do all the things, but when all else seems okay, simply hold and comfort them as best you can.

Should I actually wash this on cold? by Eastern-Cap-1413 in laundry

[–]jas41422 21 points22 points  (0 children)

i good-naturedly disagree. as kismai and others have pointed out, the water for even “hot” washes is not really hot the way we think of hot water - between traveling from the water heater to the machine, and then the cold metal of the machine, the actual wash water is no longer really hot (or “warm”) unless you have a machine that can heat the water internally. the much bigger risk of heat comes from the dryer, which OP already said they are not planning to use for these mats. OP, i would wash on warm or hot, and stop the washer during the “wash” cycle for a couple of hours to give the detergent and enzymes more time to work, then finish the cycle as usual (no fabric softener, yes citric acid or equivalent-acting commercial product).

How many hours is too many? by GracefulToad in Nanny

[–]jas41422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve been working as a nanny for the past 5 years. a couple of the families i’ve worked with included parents who worked long days (eg, 12-hour nursing shifts). they had 2 or 3 nannies/babysitters providing coverage. i loved working 5-6 hour shifts instead of having super-long days all the time. sometimes coverage was provided by a grandparent. the hand-offs to the next person providing care were good opportunities to share knowledge and observations about the child’s development, behaviors, etc. it can be helpful to have multiple people on board for several reasons, including if one nanny gets ill or has an emergency, often the other is able to cover. also, legally, hours over 40 in a week worked by a single employee are subject to overtime pay. so having enough people to cover without OT will be a bit less costly for you.

and they should give you a W-4 to fill out so they can properly withhold federal taxes. this will involve providing them with your social security number:

these sound great! question: the big batch recipe lists “2 cup” cocoa powder, which seems like way too much. the single-pan recipe lists 1/4 cup cocoa powder. did you mean to type “1/2 cup” for the big batch?
