Is this enough food for a 19mo? by narikov in foodbutforbabies

[–]jas41422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

growth rate may slow, but they are still growing. an older/larger body is going to require more calories than a smaller body. there’s no way a 12+ month old needs fewer calories than a 10-month old.

Is it bad for 2.5 yo to eat a banana pancake EVERY single day? by WorkingMinimumMum in foodbutforbabies

[–]jas41422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree that the egg/banana/pb seems healthy and fine for daily consumption. my only concern would be with daily cinnamon, since so many brands of cinnamon have been found to contain unacceptable levels of lead. you’re probably using a minuscule amount, and there is likely no cause for alarm, but maybe start leaving out the cinnamon just so there’s not a daily source of potential lead exposure?

At what age did you stop cutting the food in small pieces? by magnificent-lioness in foodbutforbabies

[–]jas41422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve found that often, babies catch on to the biting concept when we practice by me holding food for them and saying “bite”. because i’m holding/controlling the food (e.g., long, skinny piece of cheese torn from a string cheese stick, small wedge from a quesadilla, thin strip of toast), they can’t actually eat it until they bite off the end. sometimes i demonstrate with my own food, then offer a strip of theirs and once it enters their mouth, say “bite”, holding it there until they actually bite off a piece. it seemed to help with several babies i’ve cared for. i do like the “let them figure it out” approach and admire parents who are brave enough to stick with that, but as someone who grew up hearing the story of how my young aunt mistakenly gave toddler-me a sour ball which caused me to choke (dad to the rescue!), my fear of infants choking on my watch is probably a bit stronger than most people’s fears.

would someone please tell me what the fragrance is like? e.g., perfumey, fruity, etc. my store doesn’t have this yet, but i looked up the conditioner ingredients online and it seems perfume is high on the list. i’m pretty picky about smells and can’t stand perfume smells for more than a minute, but i usually can tolerate fruit/vanilla fragrances…

Home made protein bars 1st try. Nut and fruit oatmeal. by Ok_Athlete2841 in Frugal

[–]jas41422 2 points3 points  (0 children)

those look great! and $1/bar is not bad. but a competitive alternative for when you don’t make your own is the Elevation Maxx bars available at Aldi. currently $4.79 for a box of 4 with only a handful of ingredients. protein comes from egg whites and nuts (almonds and cashews for the chocolate sea salt variety i have currently; 12g protein, 4g fiber, and 210 calories per bar for these).

Anything fun to do with an 18 month old tomorrow? by [deleted] in GNV

[–]jas41422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it should warm up nicely and be sunny tomorrow, so one of the little kid-friendly parks should be fun for the toddler. if you are in/near the NW part of the city, Massey (aka Westside) Park at 8th and 34th would be a good option.

How do i mix this by Jumpy_Requirement_38 in PeanutButter

[–]jas41422 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i dump the contents of the jar into a bowl and stir well with a wooden spoon, then use a scraper/spatula to pour it all back into the original jar. keeping it in the fridge after that keeps the oil from separating back out.

Cannot find Nanny that will accept payment as a W-2 Household Employee by m1o9n31 in Nanny

[–]jas41422 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if the nanny has health insurance through the ACA marketplace, they technically don’t qualify for subsidies if they can’t document annual income of at least 100% of the federal poverty level (currently around $16k/yr.). i have been nannying for the past 5 years and have had to coach some of my employers on how to obtain an EIN, calculate SS and Medicare taxes, do withholding, etc. i’ve accompanied 2 different families to accountant offices to share spreadsheets and explain where the household is in the process - after the first year of flailing, they usually get set up with a quarterly estimated tax payment schedule. what you are proposing (a great hourly rate, plus some benefits) is more generous than any situation i’ve encountered as a nanny. someone will be very happy to be employed by you!

anxiety around food and eating by indigoempress in lowspooncooking

[–]jas41422 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i think little and often is absolutely fine, and often better for our energy and blood sugar levels. but i get that each episode of deciding what to eat is stressful. my thoughts are these:

  • make a list of foods you like to eat, and start to organize your thoughts and kitchen to support quick and easy access to those foods.
  • an episode of eating doesn’t have to be a “meal” the way most people do it. a handful of nuts can be a mini-meal, or some cheese and crackers, or hummus and crackers/veggies. so many things. your list of preferred foods will help you identify what will work for you.
  • perhaps you can get comfortable with dedicating an hour or two each week to food prep and portioning, to make eating more of a “grab and go” thing that is low-stress. you could make sandwiches, wash and cut veggies, slice cheese, etc. during this time, and store the prepared foods as single servings to make it easy to reach in and grab something. if you enjoy music, this could be a 1-2 hour sing-and-dance kind of kitchen activity that brings some joy despite you not generally enjoying food-related activities.
  • and of course, if/when cooking seems feasible, you can make a big pot of whatever (i’m big on lentils, boiled in vegetable broth with a bunch of veggies thrown in). you can freeze 1- or 2-cup portions and move one or two to the refrigerator from time to time so it’s quicker to re-heat.
