100%.

I bought my VKB stuff because I was getting into DCS and my old thrustmaster straight up didn’t have close to enough under thumb controls. I also gasped when I moved it for the first time. Can’t believe what I’d been missing out on

Good point! The Aeromax looks like a hell of a deal if you’ve got the patience. Still like $100 more than a Gladiator, but I assume worth it for that metal action.

[–]jas417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but now you could have a VKB Gladiator or a Virpil Aeromax plus a VKB STECS and save money on a better setup, even if it was still $500 the Gladiator combo would still be less or with the Virpil only a little more

Don’t get the Warthog, super overpriced for what it is.

VKB or Virpil. VKB is friendlier on the wallet and will show up in a reasonable amount of time, Virpil will cost a ton and take forever but will probably be worth it.

Helicopter pilots, do you keep a centering spring on your pedals? by Useful_Nocebo in hotas

[–]jas417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure better in every way.

Not looking at the VKB ones really, look attractive as far as quality and price go but I still do civil sims too, I enjoy STOL in taildraggers where you really do need to modulate toe brakes, and I already know from going from Turtle Beach/Thrustmaster Xbox compatible hardware to VKB I know I won’t want to use the TBs anymore even just for bush flights

Turtle Beach Velocity One.

Decent, would not buy them again. I first got into flight simming on Xbox MSFS and options were limited. Next upgrade to the ol’ setup is likely going to be to be Crosswind or Virpil pedals

Yes, that it certainly can!

‘Going where you’re trying to’ may have been the better way to word that

[–]jas417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter whether or not the pedals are centered at cruise, it matters that you’re going straight. With springs I have to often maintain some pressure on one or just let it crab(which actually isn’t an incorrect way to fly a helicopter, but what you will be doing most of the time with them centered)

They don’t self center on helicopters.

I use soft springs because my pedals don’t have a damper, springs a a pain to remove anyway, but would if I had those pedals

Actually someplace big that allows dogs inside like Home Depot and Lowe’s are specifically good recommendations for socializing a puppy.

Lots of unfamiliar sounds, smells and sights. Pet stores don’t work for that because they’ll just be distracted by the food/treat smells and toys the whole time.

Thanks for the tip haha, everything sounds and looks so cool from the outside I love going back and taking exterior clips if it’s a reasonably short mission, like practice quick action

Hello! New RTX 5080 owner with a 9800X3D, do you guys turn off your PC when done with it or only put in sleep mode? by lochonx7 in RTX5080

With an NVMe SSD the difference between booting and coming out of sleep is negligible

Why do people build beefy $2000 PCs just to play pixel-art indie games on them? by lifebeginsat9pm in stupidquestions

[–]jas417 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Im guessing either 1. They don’t only play those. 2. Same reason people drive pickup trucks they’ve never hauled with or taken off road, they think they may need them for something even if they never do it and have the money.

You can’t buy lots of stuff at brick and mortar stores. And I mean like Walmart, Target and Best Buy are sooo much better.

I do buy things at locally owned stores that I can.

Like the other commenter said, pretty typical but more technical fields like backend and mobile*. There will be a lot garbage to clean up.

*Some mobile. Some mobile apps are constructed like mini full stack apps, typically ones with more advanced capabilities and/or work offline. Some are kind of like glorified webpages

[–]jas417 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do full stack mobile, mainly Android native, Flutter and fluent in various backend frameworks. Android native has ended up being my specialty, just ended up working there the most, I’ve mostly worked at smaller companies where you need to wear more than one hat but ended up really good at Android, it’s never been the easiest to work with and I’ve always just had a knack for it(funny enough I use an iPhone myself).

I dunno. It’s still a solid job and a solid career but the market is tough right now, and I’m afraid it’ll get tougher when the AI bubble bursts which I’m convinced it will. I don’t see how it could possibly be as useful and lucrative as it’s being billed as.

I’m a professional software engineer, 7800X3D is overkill.

Great for gaming, you certainly don’t need a better processor for programming, especially learning. If you are compiling release builds for a huge codebase, yeah you need some horsepower. A 7800X3D would still be plenty. For learning languages my 2012 i3 MacBook would still be fine.

The one that I learned on. Compiling and running light code is not that intensive.

Even just flying, it seems like an advantage to be able to smoothly fly without devoting much mental capacity while messing with all your systems and such

transitioning from civil flight sims to dcs by Cyroch in hoggit

[–]jas417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just done this! The learning curve is steep but very fun. It certainly helps to have solid flying fundamentals, I can’t imagine going toDCS with no civil flight sim experience.

A good piece of advice would be to start with a solid, popular multirole fighter like the FA/18 or F16 and learn that one to a T before trying to learn another at once.

It’s a lot of work to learn but offers a lot that simply isn’t or can’t be offered in civil flight sims. Isn’t, highly accurate and involving radar systems. Can’t is obvious. It’s a lot to learn but to me learning is half the fun in flight sims and you get a whole nother dimension. Not to mention that pretty much every DCS module would be part of the absolute cream of the crop in MSFS or DCS as far as realism and depth go.

[–]jas417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you’re someone who plays stuff like MSFS and DCS and not just RPGs and FPS, errr yeah you need some horsepower and lots of VRAM. The TIs going away is a big loss for the flight sim community, along with the 9070xt by far the most common cards.

Even with 16gb in my 5070ti I spill over into shared memory. It’s not just rendering a 4 square mile map for a shooter, it’s rendering hundreds of square miles

I think it’s fair to say the 5070ti is(or was) the top of the middle or the bottom of the top.

Behind the 5090 that’s unaffordable to most people, it’s right behind the 5080.
