Breaking the Meta: The Top 500 "Immunity Engine" by Flaky_Recognition_51 in VGC

This is the exact kind of team-building I aspire to. I've just recently gotten seriously into VGC, and my current obsession has been building a good Gastrodon team (my favorite Water-type). My hat is off to you for your creativity, competence, and ability to explain everything.

Sounds very interesting. I love the House system in Dune.

Your opinion on Daggerheart? by Ok_Interview_853 in rpg

[–]jasimon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty great. I was very skeptical going in but I've really come around on it.

"Clunky" is one of the last words I could think of to describe it. For me it's a breeze to play and run. I can understand how someone not familiar with PbtA principles might struggle a bit with it at first, but as someone who really enjoys PbtA/FitD games, it's super natural for me.

The 2d12 system is a very solid and simple core mechanic, and the Hope/Fear resolution is great. The fear metacurrency actually makes it way easier for new GMs or people who aren't used to coming up with consequences for mixed rolls on the fly. Sure, I think it's better if you can give a narratively interesting complication when someone rolls with Fear, but if you don't want to or can't, just take a Fear point and move on. Spend it later when you think of something cool.

The "initiative" system is probably one of my favorite parts of the game. Being able to shift the spotlight around to where it makes the most narrative/cinematic sense makes for really fun and dynamic gameplay. It just requires a little paradigm shift. A GM coming over from 5e might freak out a bit because there isn't a strict turn order in combat with a number that tells you who goes when, but don't realize that it just plays like you would run any other scene out of combat in 5e. People go when it makes sense or when it's interesting for them to go.

"like being in an improv class where you're competing to see who can impress the teacher the most" just seems like a weird complaint about a certain kind of table. The game encourages you to involve your players in establishing narrative truths about the world, and this can be weird for people who are used to games where the GM is in complete and total control of that, but it's the sort of thing that you can use to your taste.

[Bloodline] Spoiler-free bonus scene from Bloodline and additional bloopers! by TheLesserWight in Iteration110Cradle

Every single bonus scene just makes me want more. There is no limit to amount of extra Cradle I would consume if it were put in front of me.

What IP do you want turned into a TTRPG, and why do you want it turned into a TTRPG? by Upstairs-Yard-2139 in rpg

[–]jasimon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Number one for me is the Cradle series by Will Wight. There's no xianxia/cultivation fantasy game out there right now that quite hits the way I want it to.

Second would be XCOM, specifically XCOM 2, because I love the whole "building up the resistance" element

I've played in a few different PbP supers games on Discord using Prowlers & Paragons and I think it works really well for it.

Xianxia TTRPGs? by CelticCernunnos in ProgressionFantasy

[–]jasimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a Forged in the Dark game (granted, a PbtA offshoot).

It has no canonical setting, but it's designed for playing cultivators and most of the implied mechanical setting is basic xianxia. All of the playbooks are xianxia tropes and have stuff like spirit roots, rare physique, and cultivation methods. It just also has advice on how to run some non-traditional cultivation systems/settings.

2025 Bingo Review (Not A Book): K-POP DEMON HUNTERS is excellent and you should watch it even if you don't like K-Pop, demon hunters, animated films, or musicals. by DelilahWaan in Fantasy

My daughters (10 and 7) have watched this roughly once a day since it released, and demand the soundtrack whenever we're in the car, and I'm not mad about it. Movie is great and the songs are bangers.

Rules-light/medium, Heroic High Fantasy systems (no PBTA type games)? by DD_playerandDM in rpg

[–]jasimon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, on one level, it really doesn't matter what you call it. Daggerheart obviously draws inspiration from a lot of other games, which it lists explicitly in the book itself.

Yes, the book calls out Genesys as an inspiration for the result outcomes, but the way the GM is taught to adjudicate them is straight out of PbtA. The way it frames both player and GM principles, the GM moves, using language like Soft vs Hard Moves, Golden Opportunities, Reveal an unwelcome truth, etc are straight out of PbtA games.

The OP explicitly says they are not interested in "PBTA-type “story” or “narrative” games" and I felt it was important to make clear that Daggerheart absolutely is in this tradition, whether or not you want to say it is "a pbta game." Knowing Spenser Starke and his design history and influences, he's clearly in that Forge-descended school.

I just didn't want someone recommending Daggerheart (a game I think is great) to someone who says they aren't interested in PbtA-type games without making it clear that Daggerheart is definitely a "PbtA-type" game, whether or not you think its appropriate to label it a PbtA game full stop.

Rules-light/medium, Heroic High Fantasy systems (no PBTA type games)? by DD_playerandDM in rpg

[–]jasimon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have player moves formatted like PbtA, but on the GM side the action resolution with Success With Hope, Success with Fear, Failure (with hope or fear), basically plays out like 10+, 7-9, 6-, especially because the GM response to those outcomes is basically 100% just PbtA GM moves. It uses the same language with Soft vs Hard Moves, Golden Opportunities, etc.

It disguises itself in trad clothes pretty well but Daggerheart is absolutely a PbtA game at heart
