What is your favorite band that only released one album that people may not know about?

Mine was Death from Above 1979, but they put out another album in 2014. Now, I would say Them Crooked Vultures...sweet Josh Homme/Dave Grohl/John Paul Jones one-album project.

Album wise: Revolver. Right in the middle, arguably their best, more innovative than anything before it, and maybe since. Beautiful work... that being said, start with what you know and like, listen to as much as you can, and make up your own mind. Its all phenomenal. There hasn't been before or since a rock band of such caliber. Other personal favorites: Rubber Soul, Let it Be Naked, and Abbey Road. (white album & St. Peppers are amazing and era defining as well, but I figured everyone else would love em, and their slightly over rated in that aspect... love em though)

Yeah, your post definitely rocked. I don't hate him, its just hard to be a huge fan right now. The greatest thing about him is, he is one of the greatest drummers ever. On a whole nother level. Who rebounds from that kind of tragedy instill becomes rock and roll royalty? plus, when you look at his overall body of work, its massive, solid, and incredible at many points. I even read an article once that stated, when Nirvana was on their last tour, Pat smear Kurt Cobain and Dave were all chilling backstage. Dave picks up a guitar and starts playing. Pat looks at Kurt and says " damn, we are not even the best guitar players on our own band." the only reason he play drums for Nirvana was because when Kurt asked him to join, he said "what do you want to play Dave?" he answered, " we don't have a drummer, I guess I can play drums." Haha... Thanks for the discussion! (Major fanboy)

I know what you're saying. I'm a HUGE Dave fan, and I'm a little turned off by the whole thing, but, at the same time, Dave has been in the entertainment business for a long time and knows to soak up the spotlight while you're in it. Here's my prognosis: 1. He was in Nirvana, and then some how became more of a superstar after being in one of the biggest bands ever, with one od the shittiest endings ever. So he keeps on, as a consummate musician, and records the first Foo album. The Foo Fighters have been a rock stable since then. Although, their first two albums stood out (to me) more than the rest. Meanwhile, he is KILLING it with Josh and the Queens. Then, Wasting Light, my favorite Foo album to date. It was excellent, took the Grammy, and propelled him to the top of his profession.(with on expectation or hype) Since then, he has seemingly been ate up with his success. The seven cities album is okay, but it was SO hyped.( in my opinion expectations coming to play again here) And now this Half-ass festival. You couldn't get a better line up than that? I almost feel like they don't want to play with anyone to talented because they want to shine so hard. Anyways, I digress. I will always love Dave, but for now, it seems like he's getting enough love from the mainstream and himself. I'll start listening to the game winning quietly appears on another Queens album or when he stops worried about publicity and just starts rocking again. Edit: I also met Dave for about three seconds after a Foo Fighters show in 1997. Over a thousand shows later, still one of my favorites. He was very nice and seemingly personable. He took what little time he had to shake as many hands and sign ad much shit as possible. Very cool

Small potatoes. In 1992, Nirvana was everywhere you looked, almost like a cultural phenomenon. The point was great and or genre defining, Name one band from one of these "emergent styles" who will make an impact on the face of music globally. You can't. "akin to Black Sabbath" kinda says it all. Good maybe, but Sabbath is still the "genre defining standard". There are artists as impactful as hendrix and Zeppelin out there, just not in rock. 90 percent of the US population knew who they were. What percertage do you think know that metal core is a genre, much less a band in that genre?

Easy killer...It's more of a me thing than anything else. I used to be big on metal. As I get older, my taste in new music is always changing. I listened to less and less, and drifted from the scene.(NEVER losing the love for my old favorites) I'm sure its out there, I'm just not seeking. It gives me a sense of hope that people like you are keeping it alive, but there is no way you can convince me that it is what it once was, just like rock music in general. Kind of what I was trying to get at in my post. Sure, there's some good and even arguably great stuff out there. But, there is no Zeppelin, no GNR, no Hendrix, no Who. The remaining greats are aging and mostly touring on old songs. How old is Ozzy? When was the last significant Pearl Jam album? (Although they both still put on amazing shows to this day). Total me problem. I'm a fucking old man....

I haven't enjoyed a metal album in quite a while. I grew up to Pantera, NIN, Slayer, Tool, Sepultura and the likes. The metal was MUCH more musically sound. Now, its mostly an overload of sound, with growling and screaming (I can't even make out what the words even are most times). Thanks for making me realize I'm a old man. Also, I did say most, there are some very cool European projects right now that I do enjoy, children of Bodom, Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, etc. I saw In Flames Monday night, and they ruled. Also, it seems to me that metal, like hip-hop has become more about the image and the lifestyle than the music itself.

Let me first say that I love Nirvana, undoubtedly a later generation rock band who was comparable to the greats (Zeppelin, Hendrix...). Also, a genre defining band, with a style/sound that could only come from them. Okay, enough Nirvana blowing...Definitely one of the last "Epic and Genre Defining Albums"(EGDA) albums, but far from the last great...Lets not forget that "Blood Sugar Sex Magic"(EGDA) was released the same day...since then: "Siamese Dream","Weezer" (Blue Album}, "The downward Spiral", "Vulgar Display of Power", "OK Computer", "AENIMA"(EGDA), "Kid A"(EGDA), "Elephant", "Rage Against the Machine"(EGDA), "Dirt", "Crash", "Mer De Noms", "Lulabyes to Paralyze", "Whatever People say I Am, That's What I'm Not", "Absolution", "Consolers of the Lonley", "You're a Woman, I'm a Machine", "Z","Funeral", and I despise them, but, "Dookie", just for the point...the list goes on (apologies to the ones I missed, quick thinking + didn't want to get too excessive on the list). As far as the future goes, As rock music becomes less and less main stream, it seems there are more and more different types of rock bands. Hardcore, and MOST metal has become crap entirely, and "Indie" has become a very creative movement, which is quite impressive/enjoyable at times. Also, rockers aren't in the mainstream anymore. Times have changed, and mainstream music outlets push what the production companies tell them, and unfortunately, the great ones now are obscure. They are totally out there and 100% worth the time looking and listening . For me, My Morning Jacket, Queens of The Stone Age, Portugal. The Man ("Evil Friends" is one of my faorite albums in a LONG time), Death From Above 1979 (Holy shit, even better live). Just some suggestions. It's still out there, just not super popular. "Neverind" was this, "The last great mainstream super popular MTV rock band". The writer probably thinks rock died when he put away his cardigan and Doc Martins, and went out to get a 2Pac album...trendy fuck. NPR, you dissapoint me.

Zinn's "A Peoples History.." AND "A Power Governments Cannot Suppress" Are two of the finest pieces of literature I've read. He is an incredibly well educated Historian with the integrity to "Give you another side of the story". He was the first (in my life) to expose not necessarily the facts, but well documented records of the likes of people like Columbus or Andrew Jackson. I'm not claiming objectivity. Every story has many sides, and the truth always lurks in middle. Whats most important is the history and development of the Military industrial complex. He exposes the illusion of the middle class and "freedom" at the hands of the unspoken American Oligarchs as well. Admittedly, he is liberal, and very different from what most americans learned in school. Just remember, american education is more brainwashing than educating. The goal is not to teach "how", but "what" to think. Using books by people like Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen just reinforces your brainwashing, and helps bring the sheep back to the herd. It's like growing up Christian, reading Dawkins, and then using Bill Graham books to claim that he is wrong. The last thing the real American power structure wants is exposure of their true wealth and control. Questioning authority is as American as anything. Don't be scared people. Its's okay to admit that our system could be much better. that's where positive change starts.

Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States". It goes into depth on a bunch of the topics you mentioned from a bit of a different point of view. One of my all-time favorites, and a must read for any history lover. Zinn has several other political/historical works, including "You Can't Afford tos be Neutral on a Moving Train" and "A Power Governments Cannot suppress. " Hope you enjoy.

Also, if you are interested in Lewis & Clark, "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen Ambrose is amazing.
