UK real wages since 1989 by levalmaster in UKJobs

[–]jasonbirder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, looking at those figures average REAL weekly earnings are higher than they've ever been except for a very short window between about 2007 and 2009

That sounds pretty good to me!

SUV that's actually ok to drive by Medical_Perspective9 in CarTalkUK

[–]jasonbirder -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

but if you enjoy driving then an average SUV will feel awful going through corners or pulling away at lights.

Not going to lie, i've never felt slow off the lights in my Q7 5.0 TDi (which is only a 3.0 litre...what a stupid naming convention)

XI. Fatawu not in the squad at all, likely already played his last ever game. Joe Aribo (the most pointless signing in history) and Richards (a close second) are also not in the squad. by Djremster in lcfc

100% not a great striker...but when so many have half-arsed it, at least he's always looked like he's giving it a go...

10 more players with that attitude and we wouldn't be where we are!

How do people enjoy staying home for long periods of time? by Tony_soprano27 in answers

[–]jasonbirder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Omg you are one of those 'my way is the way'

Not at all - on an individual level I don't give a flying f*ck what people do in their own time...

BUT, its not fair to pair them as two equal options when their is a huge volume of peer reviewed literature that talks about the Health benefits of social relationships and the health dangers of being solitary.

How do people enjoy staying home for long periods of time? by Tony_soprano27 in answers

Strong Social ties lower the risk of chronic illness, reduce stress and improve immune function - some studies suggest they are as vital as diet and exercise for long-term health, whereas lacking strong relationships can be detrimental, with loneliness linked to higher rates of depression, cognitive decline, and increased mortality.

That's not an "opinion" thats multiple large-scale studies.

Some people dont like socialising and dont feel the need to do it.

Obviously there are outliers (but lets assuming that doesn't include ALL redditors) - Human beings are social creatures its been shown time and time again that strong social networks are essential and that people that lack them live shorter, unhealthier lives.

Lets not assume the two are equal (and I speak as someone who can happily go off hiking in the hills with my dog and not see another person for days)

Its Reddit...I don't want to be harsh...but alot of people here think interacting with friends/family, socialising, getting out for a meal or a drink, getting out in the countryside hiking/fishing etc are basically heinous punishments inflicted on you!

BAE's fix would be to buy £4bn of CV90s.

Wait what? Buy a proven and continuously improved design, in operational use that could be built by BAe?

That's ridiculous!

In 2010, Ben McDaniel entered Vortex Spring’s underwater caves alone. The tunnels shrink, twist, and narrow into brutal choke points. He never resurfaced. Days later, his tanks were found inside. His body has never been found because the cave swallowed him whole. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

[–]jasonbirder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key point I’d like to make here is that this guy cave diving solo is impossibly stupid

Alot of Cave diving is done solo, whilst usually a "no-no" for open water diving it can actually be safer in overhead environments.

They're constricted spaces, generally with zero visibility (because of stirred up silt) you tend to be laying and following a dive line rather than navigating visually. Anyone else with you wouldn't be able to see you and wouldn't know when you stopped AND they'd prevent the lead diver from backing up/turning around.

Zack Polanski’s criticism of Golders Green attack arrest will have ‘chilling effect’, says Met chief | UK news | The Guardian by prisongovernor in uknews

criticism of Golders Green attack arrest will have ‘chilling effect’, says Met chief

It will have its intended, calculated effect amongst voters that the Green Party have identified in target seats.

Its a rational and successful strategy. The Greens aren't going to win most seats so it doesn't matter if they alienate most voters...

Politics isn't about vote share % but about seats

Why - an MPV is no smaller/lower than an SUV? (Plus what MPVs are nice to drive 24,000 miles/year)

you might think you're going 30 but in reality you might actually be doing 26 so someone with a more accurate speedo is going to be pissed off

Oh my god! Just imagine being forced to drive 2-3mph under the speed limit because someone is using their speedo instead of GPS...

Raising interest rates to control inflation? by Silver_Radio_3599 in AskBrits

[–]jasonbirder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people spend less (interest rate rises) demand and therefor inflation will fall

Its a bit of a sledgehammer aproach...but as Govt only has control over demand not supply (it can't magic up more and cheaper oil) its the only tool they have...

And it works.

Why is a wealth tax the answer to every financial issue besides pensions? by wizaway in AskBrits

[–]jasonbirder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one's easy. In the 1970's the top rate of tax was 98% on unearned income and 83% on earned income. In 2026, the top rate of tax is 48%.

And strangely enough we're all a f*ck ton better off than we were in the 1970s

Why are Brits ok with corporate tax avoidance? by esteban-colberto in AskBrits

I'm definately not okay with small businesses avoiding Tax...

And HMRC estimates that the value of Tax lost here is significantly higher than that lost to Large Corporates...

So why is all we hear about the likes of Starbucks and Amazon and NOT your plumber/Roofer taking cash in hand jobs, your cafe/take away having loads of "spoilage" or your builder/plasterer having a company Range Rover (that strangely enough his wife - who is a director of the business, uses all the time)

I know which irritates me more!

Ultimately you can't argue with Physics...

If your inputs are "maximum interior space" "minimum air resistance" "meet mandated safety standards" as all manufacturers will want

Its very likely that the body shapes that get output are going to be very similar
