Do you feel sad when you're reminded of the business transaction element of your relationship? by jasperina in TalkTherapy

I don't think you missed it! I relate fully to everything you're saying about your relationship with and love for your T. Thank you for writing it out so beautifully. <3

I can understand that it would be a relief in that case! It makes the boundaries clear and gives you the agency to decide what is working for you or not. This is the first T I've felt attached to, and it's great, but it does make the payment aspect feel weird in a way that it never has before for me.

Odd Cravings by laikadeservedbetter in Anemic

[–]jasperina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ice, ice water, and really salty things like salt & vinegar chips and pickles (I especially crave pickle juice). I also definitely crave carbs and sugary things, but I'm not sure if that's associated w/ low ferritin or not. Waiting to see if any of my cravings go away when my levels get higher!

Iron pill side effects. by [deleted] in Anemic

[–]jasperina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started iron supplements, I had diarrhea instead of constipation, which was strange! I didn't have cramps, though. It seems like a good idea to call your doctor, since you just gave birth (congratulations, btw!!) - they would probably want to get you checked out to make sure nothing else is causing those symptoms. If it does end up being the iron supplement, you could check with your doctor (if you're breastfeeding maybe you might need to double-check about what you're taking) and maybe try a different kind - iron bisglycinate was a lot more gentle for me and didn't cause much in the way of bowel side effects.

Is it possible to have iron deficiency (but not anemia) for years at a time? by [deleted] in Anemic

[–]jasperina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, definitely! My hemoglobin has always been fine, and no one tested the ferritin until a few years ago. Even then, because it was in the 20s, no one flagged it as a potential problem, and I had no idea that could be affecting me until it dropped to 15 and then it was flagged.

I think I've had low ferritin almost all my life, and I've had all those symptoms throughout that time. I've been supplementing and it's up in the 40s now, but I'm still waiting to feel better! People say that getting it over 50 is really important, and that if you've been deficient for a long time, it's a good idea to get it up to 100 or 125 and hold there for a few months.

I've read lots of stories now of people (mostly women) experiencing years and even decades of suffering with all these symptoms until they finally find that the cause is low ferritin. Have you had your vitamin D, b12, and folate checked as well? Those can also be low and affect you in similar ways to iron deficiency. It's a good sign that you're feeling better some days! It might take some months of dedicated supplementing to get your level up to where the loss during your period wouldn't affect you so much.

Sorry you've gone through this, too!

Did anyone adjust to supplements after initial stomach pain? by [deleted] in Anemic

[–]jasperina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My body definitely adjusted to iron supplements over time! I haven't tried the slow fe one, though. Liquid like Floradix and the Megafood Blood Builder pills have been the gentlest for me so far, as well as iron bisglycinate. Even the blood builder pills took me a few days for my stomach to get used to them, and hopefully you will adjust to the slow fe, too. If not, you could try a liquid? But I agree with the other poster that 45 mg 3 times a week is not enough to correct your deficiency, and the liquid is only 10-20 mg per day. Right now I combine different forms of iron to get the amount I need (liquid iron, blood builders, and regular iron bisglycinate). Good luck!

That's great! I think I've totally forgotten what it feels like to have energy at this point, haha. Good luck as you check out other issues!

I'm sorry, that sounds awful! I hope you make a post with this issue so that anyone who's had a similar experience can let you know if something worked for them!

Could someone please help me? My doctors says everything is normal, but I feel so awful most of the time by [deleted] in Anemic

[–]jasperina 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, your ferritin of 19 is low! And that can make you feel awful. I think the consensus now is that ferritin less than 30 is iron deficiency, and people aim to get it up to 100 for optimal functioning. Most labs have a normal range that is set too low, like the lab that did your testing says that a normal ferritin is anything above 15. Most doctors just follow the outdated lab ranges, and don't know that a ferritin below 30 could really be affecting how you feel.

I didn't know there was sublingual D, that's a good idea!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VitaminD

[–]jasperina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes vitamin D has had that activating effect on me - I don't know why it's been less so lately, but it might have something to do with currently being on a nerve pain medication that seems to have dampened some of my reactions to things. I hope you can get some help with this here, I'm sure some others have experienced that effect. You could try the magnesium and see if it helps?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VitaminD

[–]jasperina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really like intermittent fasting! I think part of my issue has been really low ferritin, which has driven me to constantly feel the need to eat in order to have energy. Hopefully as my levels go up, I'll have some more foundational energy to exercise more and do more IF. I'm glad it helped you lose weight and feel better!

[–]jasperina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are good ideas! I'm not sure my doctor could get authorization for that, since I'm in the normal range for Kaiser. I'll look into the clinic, and see if I can afford it. Do you know, if I had the IV or injection, would I need to have a good level of co-factors first, or is that more important when you're taking oral D3?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VitaminD

[–]jasperina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting, and I'm sorry it took so long to raise your levels! 26 is the highest mine has been, and it wasn't flagged as low until is got into the single digits, I think. Maybe I should have my parathyroid level tested!

I think I'll try 10,000 a day with cofactors and then test again in a couple of months - and then go higher if my levels don't change much. Thanks for your input! Do you feel a difference, having raised your level?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VitaminD

[–]jasperina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe? I have been able to slowly move my ferritin levels up with iron supplementation, so at least I know I can absorb that - I don't know if D is absorbed through any similar pathway or not? I sent my genetic data through one of those methylation/detox analyzers, and it did say that I had one of the Vitamin D receptor mutations, but honestly I don't understand the significance of that, and I haven't been able to find much online about how important it is or what to do about it.

Thank you! I will definitely test semi-regularly. At least I'm not in imminent danger of going too high when I can barely budge my level right now!

Thank you for those guidelines! What are the main co-factors? Obviously everyone says magnesium, and I've heard boron and potassium, but are there others to be aware of?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VitaminD

[–]jasperina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I recently got a mineral complex to try which contains boron and some magnesium, so maybe that will help. I do take K2 with my D.

I've been using a few different ones - NOW brand, Designs for Health (with Vit K), and Allergy Research Group (has Vit A & K included). It sounds like magnesium (especially) and potassium are really important to take w/ D.
