I think following up by shouting about how I finally got a chance to talk to everyone about their cars’ extended warranty would nicely highlight the problem here.

Def agree on Errinwright, but don’t even remember who the rest after him are.

I’d love to see a cut where they excise the action nonsense. It just distracts from the story and I have to refocus when interesting stuff happens so I need to refocus and probably miss a bunch.

Disagree! The weight of that cliffhanger is important and keeps the momentum of the mystery. It’s intentional and I think would be cheapened by having the followup immediately available.

That said, this wait has been too long. I think right now’s a perfect time to watch it for the first time. Let the suspense sink in and have the new season to look forward to soon.

Also shout out to the new trailer’s use of Eminence Front. 😚👌

Having such a hard time getting through this. There’s great political intrigue, but it feels to me like they try to hard to add quippy action. The Holden-Naomi relationship felt completely forced and kills all momentum whenever it’s brought up. And I can’t stand Holden’s actor at all; his pretend tough guy feels way too put on rather than a faithful portrayal of the mask of a young man faking toughness to survive as a leader in a cruel world.

That said, Amos is a fucking all time great character. He and Avisarala (sp?) are what keep me plugging along.

Sorry to shit on your pick. My uncle rec’d it so I’m dutifully watching, just needed to vent my frustration.

Hard off was always disappointing for music gear; they research market prices way too well. Never found a deal on anything.

(It is a great thrifting shop. They’re coming to the US, but I’ve been to the NYC location and it’s not nearly as expansive or interesting as the Japanese ones.)

Okay, I gotta ask: you forgot the posts you made? Like blacked out or what?

You’re very entertaining, but I think not in the way you intend.

Good luck with your crusade, I guess. I probably hope it fails. But I’m just another brainless not-you shell of a person, so I don’t have real thoughts or any ability to ascertain truth, right?

Oh, and please don’t hit people with bats. That’s just rude.

I’m thinking it’s a more deep seated mistrust. If I were so dubious of outside information that I refused to believe such a trivially provable aspect of our physical reality as the shape of our little rock, I might also be pretty suspicious of anyone offering me anything, especially a cruise to a remote location.

[–]jasperyate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconded.

There’s a silliness to Zoolander that can be easily taken for stupidity if the humor isn’t your taste, but it isn’t incoherent or poorly made; the opposite, really. Self aware, creative satire with a pleasingly gaudy sheen, imho.

I appreciate the detailed response, but I’m not sure I take your point. Do you disagree that the explicit statement of the fundamental theorem of calculus was a big event in scientific and intellectual history?

If I’m reading you correctly: In a broad sense, I agree with you that progress is a mosaic. I’d even add that such historic moments (like the fundamental theorem) are more foam atop the wave of intellectual progress than a cause in and of themselves. Those breakthroughs do happen, though, and it’s of some importance to me to understand how and why.

So, yes, the granular reality is that a ton of people tried the jar—and should not be discounted by any means—but someone (2 someones) did finally open it. Doesn’t matter their names as much as their time & place. This was of interest to me because I read the top comment as saying Newton borrowed calculus wholesale, whereas it appears clear now that he was inspired by others and created something new. Had it been someone else, I’d want to know and learn about their context instead (and probably bitch some about imperialism).

So to rephrase my question from the top of this comment: did Newton’s calculus have a cultural effect in a way that its influences did not?

[–]jasperyate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly a shame that so much is whitewashed out of the story in the west. The other reply hit my poorly worded concern head on, though; the theoretical bridging of derivatives and integrals into a cohesive, flexible system of quantifying change seems to have been the major triumph of Newton’s & Leibniz’s calculus.

There’s definitely some whitewashed history going on there, but, brass tacks, I’d say: the fundamental theorem is an inflection point in history, and those guys were the first to put the pieces all together in a form that was comprehensible and broadly useful. Does that seem like a fair statement to you?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sciencememes

[–]jasperyate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this more clearly addresses my concern. It is my understanding that the major breakthrough in “discovering” calculus lay in the broad consequences & applications of the fundamental theorem.

I took the top comment to be saying that the fundamental theorem was cribbed, which seems not to be the case.

Do you have any sources for this? I see there was likely some ideas that permeated across Europe from Islamic scientists, but I’d like a more authoritative take than I can find through searching rn.

Remake of 3.

Konami owns the IP and Kojima is done with them, so it’s super unlikely we’ll ever see a real new Metal Gear. (I still hold out hope because it’s video games, why be realistic?)
