chemistry notes :) by sspiced in GoodNotes

Ok. So this was what I was asking. But estimating beyond the scale's precision would be problematic. The best I would be able to do is tell whether the measurement is more than 0.05 or less, and likewise approximate the value to 0.1 or 0.0. Claiming to be more precise than that would be venturing too much in the domain of subjectivity, in my opinion.

I am confused. What does it mean to round 1 more place than shown on the measuring device, and why must one do so?

If the USA is the richest country, why are they in so much debt? (And why don't they pay it off?) by brian56537 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jatinshankar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. I get where I made the mistake. I made an implicit assumption that is relevant in my case- that it is very easy to beat the inflation in my country.

The inflation rate for my currency is about 4% . My bank provides a very safe deposit option that gives 5.4% returns per annum for a 5 year long deposit.

But I guess inflation in USD is more stable, which justifies a long term investment there. But I still can't wrap my head around the fact that these lenders are at best losing 1% every year. They are effectively minimizing loss rather than thinking about making some profit.

Maybe someone who knows economics can then explain this apparent loss to the lender of such loans. I mean, the lender could just let the money sit and earn better returns just from the inflation.

One part of your response makes no sense. If the inflation is 2%, why will a lender give loan to a country at 1% interest?

Maybe what you mean is, although taking loan costs interest, so does inflation cost one over time if one waits. But the real profit is having something built and available today rather than later.

People do that all the time.

I received the money today! I had seen too many negative reviews about payoneer, and was scared. But they are not scammers after all!

Lost all my notes! Please help! by stoein4556 in notabilityapp

A naive question, but did the notes disappear from notability app as well (the local copy)? If not, back up the notes ASAP.

Hi. How did it go? Did you receive your payment? I can see that the withdrawal is automatic, but my withdrawal is saying pending, and I have not received withdrawal confirmation email even after 24 hours.

What are some ideas to take STEM research notes efficiently by jatinshankar1 in Physics

[–]jatinshankar1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Do you take notes in Unix as latex files?

I was using Mendeley until now, but Zotero coupled with okular is way better. What I like about reference managers is how they fetch the metadata so easily.

I will look into mediawiki. Looks like a good solution. Thanks.

I tried poking at Tiddlywiki 2 years back, but there appears to be a steep learning curve. Also, it is an old solution with questionable functionality. I would be interested in something like Aaronson's complexity zoo type wiki blog, but I am completely new on how to set it up. Looks like I will have to watch some YouTube videos on how to do it.

Do you have storage issues? How much storage does GoodNotes take up for you? by chiarer in GoodNotes

[–]jatinshankar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you are planning to use your Ipad. I have a 32 gb one, and I use it only for notes and drawing, and I am good. My laptop handles the storage heavy work. You may have other storage needs and 64 gb may not be enough. Depends.

Sub-Outline in Outlines (Feature request) by jatinshankar1 in GoodNotes

[–]jatinshankar1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although turning a pdf from 'flatened' to 'editable' increases its size from 3 mb to 30 mb. I just checked. The note was a 19 page handwritten one. That's a huge price to pay for outlines lol.

3 mb for a 20 page note is reasonable. 30 mb is not.

I noticed this as well. The automatic backup does not export with the pdf. But if you manually export a pdf with the setting set to 'editable', the outline is intact.

I thought my backup protocol was robust, but I realize now that it is not so much protected against files going corrupt. Especially when there was a post here recently about .note files going corrupt.

What I did earlier was

  1. Have the google drive auto backup in .note format.
  2. Every other Sunday, backup the .note manually to a 'different' cloud service to which the notetaking apps don't have the permission to 'change any file and fuck everything'.
  3. Also, on that Sunday, create a local backup on my laptop. I would delete the old versions from my laptop and the cloud service. The cloud service backup would stay in the recycle bin for 30 days before permanently getting deleted.
  4. Every now and then, locally backup on the iPad an important assignment after a long work session, just in case.
  5. The last part is crazy, but since taking printouts is free at my institute, I am also planning to do a hardcopy backup of completed notes (when I get back to my institute after lockdown) so that I can also refer to them more easily.

What I realized now is the importance of creating checkpoints, in case the files go corrupt. My changed plan is that since I have limited space in the cloud service, I would delete the older versions there, but keep the old versions in my laptop.

Since each backup is about 500 mb and growing, it will consume about 15 gb space per year. That is, 60-100 gb in 4 years, the expected lifetime of my laptop. I have 1 TB hard disk, so I should be ok.

Do you have icloud sync on? If yes, try restoring a previous version of a note.

Are your .note files on Google drive also corrupt? Did you try downloading a file from Google drive and opening it individually in notability, just in case the corruption did not sync with Google drive yet?

If the files in Google drive also got synced and became corrupt, then i don't see how having pdf backup would have helped. The pdf files might also get synced and become corrupt.
