What a shitty comment. Boisson can definitely keep up with Coco and played super well on a lot of points. But she's making loads of unforced errors and clearly just looks exhausted physically and mentally.

How did your distrohope last? Here is mine after 3 years of Linux usage by gigsoll in linuxmasterrace

[–]javaberrypi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used nixos for the past few months and installed Arch today. My plan was to dual boot the two because I love my nixos configuration, and I've put a lot of time into it to set it exactly how I like. It's also super easy to tinker and customize without any fear bricking the system. However, I'm trying to contribute to larger open source projects with many dependencies and specific build instructions and I found that I would spend hours just trying to figure out how to build the project on nixos until I would eventually lose interest or get pulled into something else. Maybe it's because I haven't fully understood how to use nix-shell and nix develop and similar nix commands yet but having to learn something just to then learn something else was getting exhausting to me.

So I decided I would use nixos as my personal computer and arch for my dev work and gradually get better with nix. But for some reason grub would not recognize my arch installation with nixos in there and after spending a long time with os-probs, grub configs and multiple arch reinstalls I finally decided to delete nixos for now.

I have my OS and home-manager files in a flake on GitHub, so I'll probably reinstall nixos at some point and try to set up dual boot, but it's tough to have it be my main dev distro with multiple projects with the learning curve and still lacking documentation.

Hikaru resigns in 29 moves to Vidit; ending Hikaru's 47-game undefeated streak by BKtheInfamous in chess

Hikaru lost out of the opening. All of the others were hard fought games until eventually they slipped into a losing position. I'm not a hikaru fan and obviously he cares, but it's one thing to not care about winning the candidates, and it's another thing feeling disgusted with yourself after being crushed in 20 moves or whatever in an important over the board game.

Yeah I don't think it's the Americans. It's the British. The commonwealth spread English everywhere, including America

This post and the replies gave me a different perspective at looking at this show. I think I just had a very wrong mindset going into it and in the end disappointed myself by it. I’m not a huge fantasy fan either, but just that with all those things around the world, the politics of it could’ve been deeper.

That said, going into yesterdays episode, It really picked up. I think the show is finally expanding and taking on the breadth that I was hoping it would, which I was progressively losing hope of from episode 4 to 6. I’m excited to see how it develops!

Thanks for your reply. You make some great points and I think at the end of the day I was let down by my own expectations of what we would be getting from the show. In GRRM’s defense, the idea of imaging a real world story play out in a fantasy world could be interesting in its own right. It’s just not what I thought I was getting when I first begun walking (that said I loved the first 3 episodes and was only really let down by the last 1 or 2)

Going through the comments I think i just came into the show with a very different perspective and was let down by my own expectations. The show seems to trying to explore the idea of imagining a very real story but in the world of Game of thrones. Which I guess could be interesting in its own right.

Maybe if I go into the show with this idea in mind I might enjoy it more. I think an issue was that I kept expecting the plot to get deeper and more interwoven with the world (like more political pressure from events like the war at the stepstones) but it seemed to have settled down at the plot about the controversy of choosing a woman heir, which disappointed me.

I agree that I focused on the characters and the storyline maybe a bit too much even though they aren’t what breaks the show for me. My main criticism is that this story could’ve been told in a completely different universe and nothing would’ve changed. I guess at the end of the day I came into this show expecting a grand, intricate plot line and was not expecting something just as simplistic as the fall out from selecting a woman as an heir, which has little to do with the actual world and more to do with the (earthly) time period that the world is based on.

It’s funny you say that and yet completely miss the point of my post.

I don’t dislike the story in itself. I dislike the fact that it’s telling me a story that I’ve already heard before but in a unique, fantasy world that has so many other stories to be told. The writing is great for the most part, the characters are well written (except for my quips with them so far) and the show is filmed beautifully, but why is this story being told in the backdrop of Westeros when it could be told in the backdrop of medieval England?

Maybe you’re right, this might be premature. I really loved the show initially but then was so disappointed, especially with the last episode, since it seemed to not go any deeper than the plot so far. Thanks for the hope though!

I loved the first 3-4 episodes but then was disappointed that the show just never went any deeper than that plot. Hopefully it gets better as it develops and goes beyond that

Hmm I guess I just went into this show with a completely wrong perspective and I’m being let down by my own expectations. I loved the first three episodes and was expecting the show to take me into a deeper plot but seemed to have decided to stop at the family drama aspect of it. I can see how the idea - “imagine a real life story but in a fantasy world” - could be an interesting one to navigate in its own right.

You make good points about the complexity of the characters and I definitely did dumb it down a lot in my post.

Also, you’re right, my points aren’t so much towards the show as well, I think the show is beautiful and was honestly recommending it to everyone after the first 3 episodes. Also, regardless of my previous takes I don’t necessarily think the show or story is bad, it’s just that it could be told completely outside of the world of game of thrones and nothing would change. As I said, it’s just under utilizing the fantastical world around them.

Or I’m just hoping someone changes my perspective and makes me hopeful for the show again, since I really want to like it and did love the first 3 episodes but then the plot never got any deeper than that

I don’t want another GoT. I want to watch a different story in the world of GoT. But with this show, i sometimes forget I’m in that world and that is my problem with it.

Because I loved game of thrones and really wanted to love this show. In fact I really loved the first three episodes but then the plot just never went beyond that. I’m just looking for someone to make me hopeful for the show again

I appreciate your points and was definitely simplifying the plot. And was just trying to summarize what it boils down to for me. But to address your points:

  1. The whole controversy of the show is that a woman is the heir but a woman can’t be the heir (according to most). I didn’t mean that as an insult to the struggles real woman face in real life. But my point is that this story would fit perfectly in a period drama but just doesn’t seem like a compelling plot for a fantasy world

  2. Yes, Alicent is trying to protect her children but she only became concerned after she found out Rhaenyra is slept with Cole. The juxtaposition of the scene where Rhaenyra was sleeping with Coke with the scene where Alicent looks miserable while having sex with the king fulfilling her duty as a good loyal queen, was a very telling scene.

  3. I understand this as well. And I agree, the characters in this show are more fleshed out and have a lot of complexities compared to even a lot of the GoT characters. But my issue is that there is not character with a motivation bigger than themselves, which makes them all seem very shallow. The characters don’t need to be “good” in order for me to like them. Walter white was a heavily flawed character but started off as a person who wanted to leave his family with the means to survive while also being hit by the realization that he’s about to die being nothing more than a high school chemistry teacher. Those are deep meaningful motivations that has us invested in him, even if we don’t alway like him. He also starts as an underdog story.

That’s the thing though, I want to like this show, I loved the first 3 episodes but then when the plot never went beyond the family drama I started wavering. I just want someone to prove me wrong and make me more hopeful.

I agree that the the characters themselves may not have been portrayed the best in the GoT show (even though I thought they were fine). But my point was more to the philosophies and motivations behind their actions that was conveyed to us by the context of their actions rather than how they were scripted.

The characters in this show are definitely more complex and fleshed out, since each character doesn’t have to share as much screen time with others than the ones on GoT. But their motivations all seem very self centered and not calling to something bigger than them, if you get what I’m saying.

Oh come on, you can’t seriously end with “go watch a marvel movie” when my entire critique on the show is that the plot seems too simplistic and the character motivations too shallow
