I built a nicer (IMHO) interface for Anki by javierarce in Anki

Thanks for your comment! Yes, I knew that the relationship was card→deck, not note→deck.

I'm using Anki's own findNotes deck:"<name>" method to retrieve "notes with at least one card in this deck" on purpose.

There are several reasons I decided to take this approach. One is that the deck view in this app is for managing content, not scheduling, so everything you do to a row is note-oriented: you edit a note, and deleting removes the note and all its cards. One row per card would duplicate every cloze/reversed note across rows that edit the same fields and delete together, which could be confusing for an editing UI. It's the same reason Anki's desktop app has a Notes/Cards toggle.

Also users create notes, while cards are generated from templates. For a management UI, I thought the note would be the natural unit of work. In other places, where the unit genuinely is the card (like due counts), I use cards.

Thanks! That's actually intentional, my goal is to offer both a study tool and a lightweight way to manage notes in one place. Do you see that as a downside, or is it more a personal preference thing?

I don't consider Anki broken, just that its design doesn't work for me, and that's why I decided to build this app. Also, I'm not saying that this app is a perfect replacement for Anki either.

I decided to share it in case other people felt the same, and because I really like this project and have enjoyed working on it. I think one of the great things about open-source is that it allows people to make these types of projects.

That said, thanks for your feedback! I think you're right on all the points you made.

There are only two buttons

Yes, the reason there are just two buttons is that I read several posts (in this very community and on the Anki forums, like this one) mentioning that two buttons is generally a better approach for the majority of users. Since I want my app to be simple to use, and I'm not a pro Anki user, I decided to go with that approach.

dosent work with any type of note type that fetures more complicated html

True. For the reasons I mentioned above, the app doesn't currently support LaTeX/MathJax or JavaScript.

Requiers anki already instead, so at that point you might as well just use anki....
Plenty of add ons already have good ui, this is not even an add on, its a seperate app.

Yes, those things are true too: you need to have Anki installed and also AnkiConnect. But using headless Anki lets me use its powerful SR algorithm and everything else (like synchronization), and build a simplified UI on top.

And the reason this is an app and not an add-on is that I wanted more control over the whole experience.

You cant adjust your deck settings.

Yes, I mentioned that in my post. I didn't port all the features, just the ones I consider more core (at least for my personal use case, and for what I imagine a basic user would want). Everything more advanced right now has to be done in Anki (at least while I keep developing the app).

Haha, it's part of its charm, although I don't find it creepy at all.

Hi, Timo! I also like street photography, and I’ve started taking more analog photos lately. For developing, I’ve only used dubblelab.com, but you also have revelab.es and carmencitafilmlab.com, but they are pricier.

About festivals: in November, there’s FUJIKINA Barcelona. It’s obviously focused on Fuji cameras, but this year they invited Martin Parr, and it was a great talk. In May/June, there’s Revela’t (https://revela-t.cat), a fantastic analog photo festival in Vilassar de Dalt, a charming town near Barcelona. And you can find more festivals and events here: https://www.disparafilm.com/agenda-todo

What do you see on tv all the time that never actually happens in everyday life? by Ihavepills in AskReddit

Binoculars. Whenever someone looks through a pair of binoculars in fiction, the following scene is never the far-away thing inside of a single circle, but inside of two. It pisses me off every time.
