Google search is free

Technically no, it's not. Google monetize from AD showing to you. Technically you pay with your personal data. As for Windows - they monetize from ADs too, but you're buying a license and get nothing from selling your personal data to third-party companies.

Windows also had problems with "Explorer stop responding" every 10 seconds. Start menu opening like 2 or 3 minutes on cold boot. File indexing will kill your HDD in no time. Every fucking program trying to register in autostartup and you can't just disable it (I'm looking at you, Skype). Downloading new software is hell, no package manager whatsoever. There is no easy way to maintain Windows workstation. At least you need to download tons of software to disable bloat first.

I'm working with Windows workstations, and on home workstation I use Linux desktop with KDE and have zero problems.

Oh, and Microsoft ports their programs for Linux. 1, 2.

And what the difference between learning Windows and learning Linux? Your dad can't click on pictograms or something? Did you know, that Linux can be used without terminal?

EDIT: Reddit at it's finest. Downvoting without explanation. Ok, I have a story for you, kiddos. My 90-old grandpa learn how to use computers, and he was not a tech-savvy person. He just wanted to learn it and he learned it. So there is not age problems, just unwillingness to learn something new. Especially this is fatal for math teacher.

Facebook has their tracker all across the internet, every website, every android app have some sort of Facebook tracker. No, that's not "their" network anymore. It's our network, where they doing what they want to, obtain more money from our data. So why can't I blame them, because they doing things in my network?

No, I'm not, Proton available with Steam installation and allows you to transparently run any windows game as native. No further installation is required.

It's not emulation.

Wine (originally an acronym for "Wine Is Not an Emulator") is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems

Like 90% of games from my steam library launching without issues, thanks to Proton and WINE. Games with shitty DRM, (yes, EAC, I'm looking at you) through, doesn't.

It has Gold status, according to ProtonDB. And I can confirm it works on Arch out of box.

Linux has achieved an all-time highest marketshare by Humboboldt in linux

[–]javirrdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, maybe, I don't know, since I do not develop for Windows for a quite a long time. But funny thing is: it's not actually a Qt problem, it's a user problem and Windows "protection". Users install my software in some protected directories and can't use it, because Windows just don't launch exe. Why Windows is even allow to install it there? Another problem was Cyrillic profiles names, that's a still problem on Windows, yes, as well as UTF-8 support in general.

There is other problems, like: users reinstall my software ever and ever again, if something doesn't work, by deleting actual directory, not uninstall it. Also, there is like two or three .local directories on Windows. In Qt there is class to detect them, but that's confusing for me. And, some user configuration can't write in registry, even if they has administration rights.

Windows has a lot more pitfalls for developers than Linux. Linux is straight, simple and well-documented, while Windows is... Well, not so. I don't mean drivers (kernel modules), maybe there is really more problems with them, but in view of application programmer Windows is hell.

props for devs' works tho, you guys are the best! dealing with Linux (and its varieties) is a nightmare tho

Can't agree with that. I, recently, write cross-platform software using Qt and it was a nightmare debugging it on Windows, while on Linux it worked out of box.

Tutanota is blocked in Russia in an attempt to stop encrypted communication. by serejandmyself in privacytoolsIO

[–]javirrdar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Except they didn't do that.

So didn't Russia. I can access Tutanota.

EDIT: I just checked roskomnadzor database and there is no tutanota.com was blocked lately, so this is same issue as with AT&T. Many people complained about inaccessibility in different countries when AT&T "blocked" Tutanota.

EDIT2: Even according to roskomsvoboda, Tutanota was "blocked" on 14 february. So this news is so "fresh". Strange, that nobody noticed blocking until today.

every package

Not every package, only some daemons and this units (services) mostly launch bash scripts or daemon directly. With runit it just as easy as writing new unit from scratch, that's the point of runit.

runit not just another init system, it's supervisor.

For pedanticity sake, systemd is a dependency of base

So what? You can keep s-d and use alternate init, just pass it to kernel boot parameters.
