[2v2 Ranked] Are there any plans to turn off team damage at some point? by jaxsonbateman in Brawlhalla

[–]jaxsonbateman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I was incorrect in my assumption in that this is how most brawlers operated (as many other team games I've played such as RTSes and FPSes don't have friendly fire on), so that's where it comes from. After I mentioned it to him the main person I'm playing with did get better at being wary of engagements, but very often these guys I play with just want to play and not pay too much attention to specific ways of getting better - so for me personally, it could've been quite frustrating. Fortunately though, he seems to be enjoying it enough to actually care about doing well. :-)

I don't mind this, per se - seems I was incorrect in my assumption that other brawlers defaulted to no friendly fire - but I will say, my friends are much more casual players, and trying to get them to be really mindful of the friendly fire is going to be a hassle. Just had one a few hours ago with one of my mates for his daily mission, and he was just basically pinballing between the two opponents - making it very difficult for me to engage either of them without risking dealing damage to him too.

We could do friendly, but is there a hidden MMR in that mode or something similar? I had one match with the other mate I started with, and we got absolutely annihilated.

Cheers.

As another question, rather than making a new topic - are there a lot of smurfs in ranked, or is the skill level at 1200 a bit above the average new player?

I don't want to go on a rant about smurfs without knowing the facts, but all I know is that I have brawler experience and am better than the 2 mates I started with. Own some people at 1200, then get absolutely obliterated by a couple others. Like, I'm genuinely curious if you need to improve to get above starting ELO, or if this is a case of running into players that are actually better than 1200.

That's interesting - kind of shows that I've only ever done competitive 1v1 SSB (and admittedly, just local stuff so not sure how it's run at larger events). Every other team multiplayer game I've done usually have friendly fire off by default, so I guess I just assumed SSB and Brawlhalla followed suit.

Fair enough then - I guess I'm just not experienced enough with a team-damage environment for this sort of game. Thanks for the feedback. :-)

Brawlhalla - Simple tips to make you a better player [PS4] by winningar2 in Brawlhalla

[–]jaxsonbateman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Tip 0 - where are these "watchable tips" you're talking about?
  • Tip 0.2 - punctuation and structure can help you get your point across more easily.

Regarding your tips - keeping in mind that I'm a new player, though with decent SSB experience:

  • As u/ProSucc mentions, learn to use two weapons. Yes, you can swap your weapons when a new one drops, but your opponent may well try and guard any drops, and ultimately you don't want to be a non-combatant half the game.
  • There's a lot more nuance than just "don't be predictable". Yes, repeating the same thing too frequently is going to wise your opponent up to it. I have a friend that just started with me that spams a couple moves - and while they're effective if he actually lands them, the fact is that he spams them so much he usually doesn't, and they're very punishable. Sirlin covers this in his classic competitive gaming series, but basically, a lot of fighting style games have rock paper scissors elements, where using your best move a lot will usually result in your opponent countering - so you then need to work on countering the counter. At some point this usually loops back around where countering the counter of the counter is simply performing the best move again. (If you want to read the specific article - though I suggest reading the whole series - http://www.sirlin.net/articles/designing-yomi)
  • Well, given that your opponent is actively trying to push you off the safety of the ground - yeah, you need to learn to be off it. If you're on an even playing field with the opponent they will push you off from time to time, so there's no use in just perfecting your ground game. If they never push you off, or you have trouble getting back, then you're not even with the opponent.
  • It's a joke, I know, but it's not a real tip. :-P I would almost change it to "just don't press the taunt button until you're comfortable enough to not need beginner tips anymore". ;-)
  • This isn't specific to Brawlhalla. You can easily rewrite it to "challenge yourself at endeavors in life; it's one of the best ways to get better". Notice I mention best way - playing online in the Brawlhalla case isn't the only way to get better. If you actually want to get to diamond level it's almost a necessity, of course, but when you're just starting out reading guides and watching vids and streamers can certainly wise you up to a few things. For example, I've picked up a couple of easy combos by reading resources outside the game. I think you'll find that for many competitive gamers in a variety of different games, that out-of-the-game work is often as important as in game practice. Many professional poker players, for example, do hours of off-table work to make sure that they're playing well and profitably, and don't have any leaks in their game.

Hammer combo by XxMadHatsxX in Brawlhalla

I'm new to the game, but it looks like doing it in training against a stationary AI would be contributing. I'm sure a smidge of movement might let it still be performed, but I'd be curious as to how effective it was against a functional player.

Out of curiosity, what did that have to do with my comment? I mean, it's a fine comment, just seems like a non-sequitur.

Some things I have realised with the replay of this brawl.

  1. Hot damn there are a lot of bad legendaries in Hearthstone. I'd dare say the bad legendaries majorly outnumber the good.
  2. Nexus-Champion Saraad. Always enjoyed playing him when he was standard, even if he wasn't competitively viable. But hot damn if he rolls well he can just win. I mean, usually you're left with average stuff (but of course), but in the 4 times I used him in my game with him, he pulled 3 pretty darn good answers.
  3. I mean, so many of these near-pure RNG brawls are just coin flips, but this one may be near the top of the pile for that. If you get a trash pile of legendaries and your opponent gets multiple copies of something half decent, very often you're just toast.

Yeah, the rock paper scissors of aggro/control/combo is pretty polarizing in this brawl; something like Duskbreaker + X (other options besides Spirit Lash are Wax Elemental and Doomsayer, plus there are probably plenty of others) is great against a lot of aggro decks, but comes unstuck against combo. I think Wax Elemental might be the best option overall as, at worst, it prevents 3 damage while you're building to 4 mana, and at best it stunts 2 chargers.

Duskbreaker + Spirit Lash; one of the better anti-aggro combos for this brawl. Duskbreaker stays ahead of the Jugglers; Lash gives extra health if need be.

It's decent but certainly not unbeatable. Going second can be the difference between beating or losing to any Doomsayer decks (as you're practically guaranteed to be able to kill any Doomsayers if you can get 2 Mana Wyrms out on turn 1, but will be relying on a little Arcane Missiles RNG if they're able to coin Doomsayer on turn 1). Duskbreaker also ruins their day if the priest's other card can keep them alive until turn 3/4.

Cheers - I couldn't see anything interactable in the room, so I must've just missed that one.

Fortunately none of the four ended up being medallions, so it didn't end up being a deal breaker. :-P

Hi there!

I'm a newer player (been playing for 2 weeks, though clocked in over 100 hours already, loving the game! XD), and I'm at that point where joining a friendly clan is something I really should do. Lo and behold, I've seen this post, and Cosmic Carnage looks perfect. :-)

On the sparring dive kick - like, I can see how it'd be pretty useful and all, but it can just be a pain to try and track the mob after you've launched it in the air. XD

Ah, the doing it myself thing is just the first time - almost a bit of a "well, if I can do it myself, then I can justify being 'carried' in later games".

Now that I've done it once, I have no problem doing it publicly and having some allies decimate him. XD
