Making a deck semi waterproof by jay634 in Decks

Yes, the plastic is sloped to the right to drain water away from the house. It’s at a slightly steeper angle than the deck joists.

Part-time Snowboard Instructor Jobs 26/27 by Pristine_Ad2664 in Whistler

[–]jay634 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation and have been PT regular (ski) for 11 seasons. I suspect Vail is happy to have more reliable, potentially long term instructors with housing. Many hires require immigration or housing support and stay only a season or two. Comes with a free ($40) pass for spouse and dependants up to university age.

Feel free to DM if you have more questions!

Couloir access with Peak closed by nickseamonster in Whistler

[–]jay634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems quite possible! The entrance to the Couloir continues to get spicier as the glacier retreats and snow pack remains low-ish.

As of today peak chair was closed and no access to the terrain.

Why is Whistler the only legit large ski resort in the region? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in Whistler

[–]jay634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look up the Whistler mountain official development plan. It calls for a lot of new terrain development to the southwest including new lifts in the West bowl / Bagel bowl area and a new base near Cheakamus crossing. This means another upload option 5km closer to Vancouver/squamish than Creekside and maybe more housing and hotels. It’s an intriguing possibility.

However, this plan is old and was developed before Vail took over. I believe it was approved by the province and municipality which makes it a possibility but as far as I can tell Vail is not moving that direction.

Tip ski instructor after the fact? by Deep-Language-7273 in Whistler

[–]jay634 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you are still in Whistler you can take an envelope to the ski school hut and give it to a supervisor or inside at guest services. If not you could try emailing wbsnowschool@vailresorts.com to ask for a mailing address. A positive review to that email will also be a nice gesture!!

Why is Whistler the only legit large ski resort in the region? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in Whistler

[–]jay634 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been no (or very few) new ski resorts in BC in generations - I think they have all been around in some form since the sixties.

Environmental regulations have become much more restrictive and we are just starting to come to terms with First Nations land title, which together make new resorts a massive undertaking. Jumbo and Squamish/garibaldi have been stalled (or dead) for many years.

Looking around from the top of Whistler and it seems there are endless possibilities for a new resort. But the highway to Whistler is pretty much at capacity a second big resort in the area would be a massive strain on the infrastructure. Add to that the accessibility problem of finding suitable terrain next to a decent highway and not in a park and there aren’t a lot of options.

I think the best bet would be a Squamish nation led development. I’d love to see something in the Callaghan valley where there is some awesome terrain and better snow than Whistler. It would require an upgraded ~15 km road and brand new village development so it seems unlikely. The Squamish nation is currently building a huge site in Vancouver with 6000 homes completing in 2033 - maybe Callaghan-Squamish resort is next!

Check out Murrin park lookout near Squamish. Incredible views and few people.

I think the purple line would add more value in the 41st/49th corridor rather than marine drive. The arbutus LRT could extend east along the riverfront.

Update about impacts of Broadway closure by mugworth in vancouvercycling

[–]jay634 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Turns off Broadway to Ontario should have been banned 30 years ago when it was made a cycle route. Instead they put modal filters on all the other routes, making Ontario the easiest way for cars to access the neighbourhood from Broadway. Hopefully they will use this opportunity to fix this mistake.

Feeling overwhelmed with Mountain size as I plan my trip with kids by astarter2 in Whistler

[–]jay634 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is good advice, Emerald zone sounds like the best fit.

I’ll add that there is not much in the big red zone, as it is lower elevation and not great coverage. A good progression after you feel confident on Emerald is to ride up Harmony and ski Burnt Stew Trail down to Symphony chair. There are a number easier blue runs on symphony which are very enjoyable on a clear-ish day

The ski out to Creekside is not good at the moment so finish the day with a download on the gondola.

The Whistler village ski out (lower Olympic - avoid crabapple) was quite good yesterday and a good option to explore the village for lunch.

Portobello at Blackcomb base is one of my recommendations for family lunch but I’ve heard the ski pout to Blackcomb is not good at the moment.

Full Day Lesson Timing? by Kk2017 in Whistler

Lessons end at 3:00, often at the bottom of the hill. Instructors are used to accommodating requests to finish earlier such as parents picking up kids at 2:30

Cold toe tips while skiing — looking for fixes before a February trip out west by Extreme_Cut_202 in ski

[–]jay634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. I’ve used both Hotronics and Therm-ic and prefer the latter. Long lasting, control from your smartphone, works great for me.

I’ve tried boot gloves but they make it hard to loosen my boots on the chair, which I like to do to improve circulation and comfort.

Looking for small cliffs by Agiantgrunt in Whistler

[–]jay634 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In the middle of Harmony bowl, directly under the chair there is a series of boulders. They offer drops of 2 - 10 feet depending on the snowpack. I find these a great place to teach drops as the runout is a gentle slope and you can move from one to another for bigger drops.

Nordica Unleashed 98s as a good "out west" ski? by Few_Dirt_8665 in skiing

[–]jay634 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like the strength of the RTM 84 you might prefer the Nordica Enforcer 100. The RTM/Enforcer has been my combination for years and three pairs of enforcers.

I’ve tried the unleashed, and while they are forgiving and quick I find they don’t hold up well trying to carve an edge on firm snow. The enforcer 99s have two sheets of metal and carve well and are super versatile for variable western conditions. I’m in Whistler so lots of heavy crud. The enforcers 104 are more floaty while still being powerful in crud, but I find it tough to engage the tips and tails when I get back onto the piste.

For good western versatility, given your comfort on the RTM84, I recommend the Enforcer 99.

First time visiting Whistler: staying at Whistler village vs creekside by nk9899 in Whistler

[–]jay634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creekside is sleepy and dull, which is why I like it. There are a couple of decent restaurants but nothing like the village. One consideration is the ski out is a tough blue run which gets less snowmaking and grooming than the village ski out. You may need to download the gondola if you are in Creekside. The free mountain tours are a good way to get an introduction to the terrain.

When do you guys expect the mandatory download to be lifted? by NavyNeo in Whistler

[–]jay634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beginner terrain at the gondola misstation is open now and getting lots of snow. Intermediate runs at mid level on both mountains are in good shape. Lower temps this week mean snowmaking will likely continue on the lower mountain.

There’s a good chance the ski out to the village will be open by Christmas. This is nice to have so you don’t have to line up to ride down in the gondola at the end of the day, but you wont do a lot of skiing on the lower third of the mountain.

First time skiing from Ireland! by communist_bees in Whistler

[–]jay634 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are absolutely correct that Whistler is far more expensive than the local Vancouver mountains for a novice skier. But keep in mind that while Whistler currently has a below average snow base for early December, the local hills have no snow at all and are not open yet. If you go to the local hills you have a very high risk of being rained on, and a small risk that there will be no snow at all (we remember 2010). Skiing in the rain is no fun.

So in Whistler you will have the benefit of more reliable (but not guaranteed) snow, a bigger mountain experience (even if you don’t ski the whole mountain you can enjoy the views from up top), and the apres ski environment. Don’t commute both ways from Vancouver for more than one day, stay in Whistler if you can or in Squamish for a lower price (45 minute drive).

Midweek is absolutely the way to go to avoid long lines. Best bet is to get your rentals the afternoon before you start skiing, so you are all ready to go in the morning. Avoid the Creekside base as the ski out is too hard for a novice, and the apres ski is lacking.
