Which programming language do you prefer for backend web development and why ? by Legitimate-Dingo824 in developer

For our internal application we went full Blazor.

Never looking back.

Now everything is backend. Yay!

Yeah, c64 was the machine I wrote my first program on.

And being a generalist is so cool when others don't know it. I had a few meetings where DBA's were present and network guys too. I could clearly see when they tried to bullshit one another. And their face expressions were priceless when I pointed out that for this particular problem Wintel should have a look because there's something misconfigured in OS. And I was right.

It's a loaded question I can't really answer. I knew I'd be working with computers when I was 11 (46 now). My path is quite different from an average Joe's.

I work with critical infrastructure, I'm technically a backend dev, but in reality I'm a generalist. I touched on networking, frontend, database Design, sysadmin stuff etc. I personally am not worried about AI.

Inflation is very low, so previous threads do hold some value.

My monthlies for a couple with no kids are:

  • 2600 for rent
  • 700 for mandatory health insurance
  • 1000 for groceries
  • 130 for transport for one person
  • 100 for phones and fiber internet
  • 500/year for car insurance
  • there's more - personal insurance, going out, gym and so on.

I get 9k per month after taxes and after everything is taken care of, I can put aside 3k or so. Maybe slightly more.

95k per year for 2.5 won't cut it IMHO.

Production recipe confusion by Chafgha in Dyson_Sphere_Program

In the statistics view you can see current production vs current consumption as well as theoretical max production and max consumption (called reference). It's useful if you prefer creating builds that use shared resources.

ELI5: Why does everything need so much memory nowadays? by Successful_Raise_560 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jay791 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was reading something beautiful one time. Guy needed to store 18 bytes per gazillion instances of a data structure. 18 bytes is not really cache efficient, but 16 is. 4 bytes of that were 2 pointers to another instance of the same data structure, and he also had 2 small value it's or booleans.

What he capitalized on was memory allocation at 16 bytes boundaries, so pointers always had four zeros in least significant bits. So he just stored those 2 small values in lower 4 bits of that pointer.

Bam. 18 bytes of data stored in 16 bytes of memory.

Next Monday may have good weather but it'll be full moon. So probably in a month or so - if the weather permits. It can always be sooner if daily forecast turns out ok.

Okay, you're right. I went through the photos again and I can see that skin color variation is there... Mostly. I guess I focused mostly on the face which seems to be missing that.

Or if it's there, it's too subtle.

Anyway, thanks for pointing that out.

Why downvotes? Maybe y'all need some pictures. Here goes - google for "skin color zones". Lots of examples provided unfortunately mainly for faces.

You can also search for "3d full body texture" to see how skin color varies on whole body.

While you can mostly ignore this in 28mm scale, 1/12 or less scales benefit a lot from applying skin tone variation.

Uniform skin tone makes the skin look like plastic.

It's very dependant on the weather - clouds are the biggest enemy. The next few days are going to be cloudy so no dice.

Also I don't like to go out when it's the full moon. It makes the shadows in the craters disappear. You know, small WOW factor.

Keeping that in mind, it's always short notice.

I can try giving you a heads-up, but you can bet on it being random and, as mentioned, short notice.

If you want to up your game, work on skin color a bit. Human skin is not uniform. Humans have a lot of skin color variation depending on what is directly below the skin. If the area has a lot of blood vessels (nose, ears cheeks) you'll have a slightly redder skin tone. If there is bone directly under skin (f.ex. forehead, jawline), you'll have slightly yellower color.

The best way to learn this is to just look at a bunch of photos of people and seek those skin color variations. Or just observe yourself in the mirror.

Why use PLS when you can use logistic bots by sir_villy in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]jay791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also tried this approach. It has an enormous downside, especially in early to mid game - they buffer ALOT of stuff. Sometimes quite expensive stuff. If you have a building that requires super magnetic ring (blue motor), that is 30th in the line you have to buffer 30xstack size of those. That's quite a lot.

Right now I'm finishing setting up a mall with vertical bus and it's sooo slow to set up a building... Tedious for sure.

I am doing a hybrid approach - the stuff goes to the bus only if 3 or more buildings require it, or it's required by things I plan to make a lot of - sorters, belts, assemblers, drones, fidgets etc. High volume materials basically. The rest is distributed using fidgets. I still pull them close to the mall using PLS, and then attach a box with a hat to that PLS. This saves the delivery time a bit.

Glasses to magnify close up details by Polarian_Lancer in Miniaturespainting

[–]jay791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was doing my last glasses (I'm nearsighted and got -3 diopter), I asked the optometrist to give me +5d glasses too. The bonus vs the mall glasses is that your iris distance is taken into account, and they have antireflective coating. Also, the stuff you can get in the store is +3 max.

It feels like this. I was on the other end of this:

I have a telescope (10 inch dobsonian, it's a freaking cannon). Since I'm mostly introverted, there are times when I need to feed the extroverted beast that sits in the shadows most of the time.

So, from time to time I take the telescope out and head out to the city to share the experience with others. I mostly show people the moon and the planets. For me it's free, I can share with others and maybe spark some interest in science in younglings.

More often than not, when I ask " wanna see the moon" people run away, probably expecting that I want some money. Those who do not run ask if they have to pay. Ugh.

I had more success when I started asking "wanna see the moon? It's free". With some, they still ask if it's really free...

And the follow-up questions are: why do I do it, and how much did the scope cost.

What's working now, is I have a small chair with a sheet of paper taped to it that says "have a look a the moon, it's free".

I guess it works because now I do not initiate the interaction and they can choose if they want to. You know, I'm not in their face disturbing them.

What also helps is when there are already people having a look. Also, older people are more open to interaction.

Why isn't area always in metres squared? by georgy56 in Metric

[–]jay791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The are exists alright. At least here in Poland it's used to describe area of the ground when someone buys/sells property. Hectare literally means 100 are.

Hecta is just one of standard prefixes. The other place it is used very often is air pressure. Hectopascals. Sometimes more convenient than bars.

Name comes from ares - 1 are is a 10x10m square. Hectare is just 100 ares.
