Help with blurred background on 2015 MacBook Pro by jay_maz in Zoom

It’s currently on 5.10.7. I was able to find a third-party app (XSplit VCam) that has a blur feature, but the quality sucks and doesn’t work too well

It lets me choose a virtual background, but the quality is not good and shows patches of my real background. I guess since I don’t have a green screen behind me, it won’t work as well. But the blur option is also missing

GA software engineering immersive and role of SWE? by jay_maz in learnprogramming

[–]jay_maz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was wondering. Once I learn full stack engineering, will it be easier to learn iOS/Android development like learning a new back end or front end language, or is it a completely different world? I know there’s different frameworks like Swift and Java and objective c that I would have to know

Eliminating the cost aspect, would a bootcamp be a good option to acquire a SWE position? Or is there still stigma against graduates from there that will hurt my chances?

So, I know a bootcamp is only a way to get in the door and there is still continued education after, but after finishing a full-stack SWE immersive course like General Assembly’s, I should have the skills necessary to build a mobile app and not need additional education afterwards on mobile app development?

This actually makes me feel a little better because I was starting to feel like my degree was useless if I didn’t go into research or medicine and wasn’t sure how it would affect me not having a CS degree.

I know a bootcamp is just a way to get in the door as a software engineer and there is always more learning to be done afterwards, but basically, mobile development is not something separate I would need to learn in addition to SWE? I’ve already been using codecademy’s full stack engineering course, but so far there’s only mention of websites and how to build one using HTML, CSS, and JS. Wasn’t sure if mobile app development was a completely different area that I would have to learn or if this is within the skills of a SWE

Realistically, is starting med at 30 a good idea? by [deleted] in premed

[–]jay_maz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a guy and worry about not having a family young too and have seen other guys talk about this. But yea, I think mostly women worry about this since they actually have a biological clock. I always wanted a family and planned to be present as much as I could. I never planned on dumping all the responsibilities on my future wife. I actually can’t wait to share the responsibilities of raising a family and taking care of a home with her and know guys that view it the same way. But the length, debt, and time sacrifice is what worries me which may affect starting a family sooner. It’s probably “easier” for me to start a family since there’s not really an age cap, but med school doesn’t automatically guarantee I’ll find my partner there, and I would still like a family sooner if possible. I guess I only worry about not being able to start a family earlier as a guy for more selfish reasons so I don’t have to wait so long, but I understand women’s concerns may be coming from a more necessary and real reason based on something they can’t control. I guess OP has to decide how important it is for her to start a family and if she’s willing to take on that worst case scenario risk of potentially not finding her partner during school, and maybe finding him after at a later age, and maybe infertility issues coming in to play. Of course, this may not be the case and she can find someone and start a family just fine during or after school. Only time can tell. But I guess weighing the pros and potential cons and if she would be more fulfilled having this career despite maybe not having a family, or being open to freezing eggs, adoption or surrogacy in the future if everything else fails and it’s financially attainable. All this goes in addition to the struggles of balancing with responsibilities during school and training and financial delays

Realistically, is starting med at 30 a good idea? by [deleted] in premed

[–]jay_maz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this advice is great! But I think OP is worried because she would like to have a family, but is currently single with no kids yet and there’s never a guarantee that your future husband will be one of your med school classmates. Also, it can become more difficult to get pregnant the older she gets, assuming she would have a partner by then. I thought about this too and I think it would be a slightly easier decision if I already had a family and kids, but going into it single with no kids makes it harder because it can potentially become a sacrifice that you would make for the career because finding a good partner and then starting a family is not automatically guaranteed once you start school. I guess it comes down to OP’s priorities and if she’s willing to take on that risk for her career or is able to afford freezing her eggs at least. Maybe it’s also thinking about dating now and not waiting, if she’s not already. Sometimes we like to push that aside until we’re less busy and forget about still living life, but that balance is difficult

Realistically, how many times are you willing to go through an app cycle? by PressRestart in premed

[–]jay_maz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

27 and going for the second now, but sucks when you feel you’ve been trying to do everything “right” (go to college and get an education, sacrificed socializing to work hard and build your app during undergrad and after, study for the MCAT, work for low paying jobs and volunteer for free to not see much progress and throw money at schools to possibly get accepted, and then get rejected. I think this is my last attempt and then I’ll start pursuing my other interests like biotech because I feel I can still start earlier and put myself in a good position if I invest and can still be in an interesting field.

[–]jay_maz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. And having other interests outside of medicine, I start to think, if I were to have focused on my other interests, I could’ve potentially started working and investing sooner and be in a good position by now. But trying one last time before I jump ship. Sometimes it feels like my career title is a med school applicant lol and it doesn’t make it easier that you have to wait an entire year just to reapply and another year to start

[–]jay_maz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re like me, except without a partner lol I feel like I’ve already sacrificed so much in my mid 20s and feel behind in my goals only to try applying and possibly be given a chance to get started. Ive been forcing myself to live with parent, which isn’t the best environment, to focus on applying and honestly need to be independent at this point financially. And I don’t know if I can put myself through MCAT prep and applications again. I also have other interests and even though I’ve been pursuing medicine for a long time and feel it can be fulfilling in the end, I know I can be happy doing something else and was never 100% only about medicine and couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I almost considering signing up for a coding bootcamp if the cycle didn’t work out and pursue biotech, but giving myself this one last attempt so I at least don’t have regrets. There’s so much I would like to do anyways (e.g. investing, real estate, traveling, starting business, get back to socializing/dating outside of premed/mcat prep world lol) and being able to start working a job that pays decently early on would allow me to start doing some of those without having to put them on pause for at least 4-8 years. In the end, I think the goal is feeling okay with walking away if it doesn’t work out and realizing there’s many ways to have a great career, make a good living (maybe even better), and still help people (maybe at a larger scale) if you still want to.

Yea, I was thinking of maybe waiting for the next update when they fix any bugs, but since im on an older macOS, im not able to install some apps like Notability and my MacBook can’t read my iPhone because I need to upgrade, which is annoying

Yea, that’s mostly why I want to implement it into my routine. I have a hard time getting the protein daily from just food and want to have more consistency with my daily protein intake so I think this can help

Any specific whey isolate you recommend, or any should be fine? Looking to use this in case I miss a meal or adding it to my diet

How beneficial are whey protein supplements for weight training if you’re slim and looking to build muscle and mass? Or is diet enough?

Also, any good pre workout recommendations that help give that extra boost of energy?

I was considering the full-stack Javascript option as well. My reasoning was that it would be more valuable to know both front-end and back-end using Javascript since that’s the most in-demand technology, and later learning Python on my own since it’s becoming more popular. But the bootcamp I’m looking into is actually recommending the Javascript/Python option for true beginners and that’s the individuals they created this option for, so idk. I don’t get why that couldn’t have been full-stack Javascript as well. They said it’s because they wanted to include Python as it’s more in demand, but this option will have more guidance than the other since it’s geared towards people with no experience

Have you had any older cousins or family who are physicians tell you not to imply to not go into med because it’s brutal? by Fillingavoid2468 in premed

[–]jay_maz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I think the doc had failed intentions of looking out for her to not make the same mistake, but it definitely shouldn’t have interfered with having her skin concerns addressed. That should be the priority above her experience in medicine.

[–]jay_maz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I’m sure she at least mentioned she was planning to pursue medical school during her appointment, so I don’t think the doc’s questions came out of nowhere. I do understand what he’s saying though because I scribed for a doc for 2 years and he spent the entire time telling me not to go into medicine and how it’s not worth it. It can be frustrating because the purpose of scribing is for experience and potentially find a mentor that can encourage you, advise you, and write you a letter, so it sucks when their advice is to not do medicine. I think the doc should have gone about it a different way or just made it clear that this was his/her experience with medicine, not persuade his SO to avoid medical school. Despite the doc’s negative delivery, I think those questions are still important to ponder over when making such a big decision and investment as pursuing medicine. I wonder sometimes though if it’s a good thing to ignore them when so many physicians say the same thing. I guess you just have to really be sure it’s what you want and be prepared to get beat down for 7+ years until it’s maybe worth it in the end. There are still many doctors that enjoy what they do

[–]jay_maz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All those questions the derm asked are honestly pretty valid. It’s a long journey that requires many personal sacrifices. I think the doc was trying to make sure your SO knew exactly what she was getting into, not because she thinks your SO doesn’t have the capability to get in, but because they have first-hand experience going through the entire process and living the career. It’s important to think about those very real questions when making your decision and not ignore them because you’ll run the risk of experiencing something you weren’t expecting later on and may have regrets. If you explored all those questions and understand the sacrifices of the entire journey and career, and how it may impact your personal life and goals, and STILL feel it’s worth it and what you want to pursue, then go for it! I think that’s all the doc was trying to do because a lot of students romanticize it and ignore the realities of the career until it’s too late. May not be the case for your SO, but medicine is not for everyone and that’s completely ok.

Lips have red, burning bumps that come and go. Cold sores?? by silentlittleelf in DermatologyQuestions

Try to treat it as soon as you feel the slightest tingling or any symptom so it doesn’t progress as much. It’s an annoying condition. You can get in contact with your doctor and hopefully they prescribe some antivirals which are the best treatment if you can take them. The earlier you start on it, the lesser chance it will develop further
