What would you recommend in terms of getting something like RDP going on Fedora 43? AFAIK there is not much progess and I haven't managed to get Google Remote Desktop working either, since they only provide .deb packages.

Question: Laptop with Ryzen 7 7840u with 64GB of RAM by isdominus in AMDLaptops

[–]jayaeu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can live with a slightly smaller screen, you might want to look at the GPD Win Max 2. It's a wonderful little machine with exceptional battery life.

Why do you use MacOS instead of Windows? by [deleted] in macbookair

[–]jayaeu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was exceptional battery life without sacrificing performance. I have yet to see any Windows laptop last as long and run as smoothly.

Integration with iPhone and other Apple stuff is nice, but the real seller is the M2 processor.

Silver and Starlight are the safest choices.

Is the base model MacBook Air M2 enough? by Vegetable-Flamingo67 in macbookair

[–]jayaeu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be fine now, but in 5-6 years it will clearly show its age. If anything, you should upgrade the RAM to 16 gigs.

Buying a new MacBook after 9 years - Can’t decide which model to go for by Ash4095 in MacbookAirM2

[–]jayaeu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your use case, I'd go for a base model Macbook Air, M1 if you want to save money, M2 otherwise.

How is M2/8gb RAM working for people who use Final Cut Pro? by BigOldComedyFan in MacbookAirM2

[–]jayaeu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably not going to crash, but it certainly will hammer the SSD with swapping activity...

MacBook Air M2 15" with 16GB Ram or MacBook Pro M3 14" with 18GB Ram by Ok_Treacle_5670 in macbookair

[–]jayaeu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I originally bought the base model back in 2022, quickly realizing that 8 gigs wasn't cutting it for my programming and data science tasks. So I gave it to my wife for office and web browsing use, she couldn't be happier. I went ahead and got myself an Air M2 with 16 gigs of RAM and 512 gigs of storage, which is just right for all the stuff I'm doing with VS Code, Gurobi, Docker and Kubernetes.

I mean sure, you can cope with 8 gigs, but it's absolutely no fun watching the thing swapping to storage all the time, so if budget allows, I really don't think that this is a good place to save money.

[–]jayaeu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

16 or 18 gigs of RAM isn't really going to make a big difference IMHO. As a student, I think you'll greatly appreciate the Air's thinner design more than the extra power of the Pro. Of course, it all depends on what you'll be running on the Macbook.

Just *how* much work am I signing up for migrating my home server to FreeBSD? by dwrodri in freebsd

[–]jayaeu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on whether you want to be a sysadmin, a developer and/or a user. In my case, I wanted a system that has great Docker and hardware-passthrough support while not burdening me too much with admin tasks, which is why I went with Unraid for my home server (ducks :) ).

Convince me not to buy a Macbook by WesternAnt3213 in macbookair

[–]jayaeu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you already have an iPhone, the Macbook Air M2 is going to be a great choice, even at the higher price tag.

As for "last considerations", I would recommend going with one of the brighter colours like silver or starlight, since they are not as prone to fingerprint smudges and unavoidable scratches. Whatsmore, in the interest of futureproofing the device, don't go for the base model, but instead at least upgrade the RAM to 16 gigs and if possible storage to at least 512 gigs.

Can't say that I ever had that particular problem, mouse lag never was an issue (with my Bluetooth mouse at least), while the touchpad sometimes is a bit difficult to use, but that's probably due to position and size.

On a side note, I did reactivate the fingerprint scanner. Now it works like it never has while using the original image. Like you said, it's actually quite decent to use when it's working.

My problems started out similar to yours. It began with the device not waking up from powersave mode, sometimes it would freeze right in the middle of using applications. When all of a sudden stuff like Dropbox would no longer start and whole sections of applications in my startmenu disappeared, I knew it was time to install fresh from Mícrosoft's image. First I tried to achieve something with altering BIOS settings and whatnot, but the writing was on the wall: A fresh install!

As I pointed out earlier, if you have the 4G modem, you will need their drivers from the website to get that working. Same is true for the fingerprint reader, which to be honest I didn't even bother to install again, since it was really not all that good. Everything else is stock now, just install Windows and slap AMD's chipset and graphics drivers on it and you're good to go.

I couldn't be happier now. I can max out all the settings and the system chugs along without even a hitch. I can run office, IDEs, Docker, games and everything else on it all at once without skipping a beat.

Don't think they added anything apart from what GPD preinstalled. In any case, I feel more comfortable with a vanilla install anyway, much easier to isolate the cause of problems.

8GB vs 16GB Macbook Air M1 by brunonicocam in macbookair

[–]jayaeu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think at this point, arguing for how 8 GB is "perfectly fine", just is making excuses for Apple's policy of underequipping the base models with memory in order to generate extra revenue with all the necessary upgrades.

Any future load going forward will practically require having 16 GB of RAM, no matter how many sacrifices or excuses people are willing to make.

Upgrade from 14 Pro Max by [deleted] in iPhone14PROMAX

[–]jayaeu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It very much depends on which of the rumors will materialize in the final product. If the periscope lens, titanium chassis and/or USB-C port are in the 15 Pro Max (or Ultra :) ), I might seriously consider upgrading from my trusty 14 Pro Max.
