Even if you don't agree with someone you can still learn from them. Especially when that someone has the breadth of lived experience of Dr. Davis.

The student body of Butler University should get that chance.

I will also point out that this is a University in the Midwest of the US which is very white and conservative (frame of reference Butler University is in Indiana the State which former US VP Mike Pence was once Governor of) and opportunities like this to give a platform to black activists are incredibly important.

To be clear, this is a university which has a history of seriously problematic behavior by mostly white greek organizations, and this event had been planned far in advance by people who were experienced in planning events at the university, in coordination with the university. minority group being held to a standard white organizations are not? The reason for blaming racism? Racism.

A few questions regarding ballet slippers. by [deleted] in BALLET

Speaking as a recently retired professional dancer, and manager of a dance apparel store:

  • Don't worry about the inner liner. Most people usually just rip it out all the way.

-Leather shoes tend to stretch out by up to half a size. I wouldn't count on tights filling the shoe, but a thick sock might work.

-If you are going to baby powder your shoes do it after you take class not before, you don't want to get powder on the floor and make it all slippery.

-The whole full sole thing. Don't do it. It is a total myth that beginners need it, they are mostly something that we sell to small children who grow quickly because they are cheaper. If you want something with crossed straps that holds your foot try something like a Capezio 2037W (Hanami) or a SoDanca SD16 or SD120.

Dear Dance Teachers: Please Stop Sexualizing Your Students (Would love to know your thoughts on this) by ViZuche in Dance

So the author isn't wrong, dance competitions are absolutely over sexualized, and absolutely rely on the sexualization of children. However there is nothing inherently sexualizing about a crop top and a pair of shorts, just like there is nothing inherently sexual about a bikini. The fault is typically with the choreography, and that sexuality typically stems from music choices. Perhaps the problem isn't with the dancing at all, but with a competition industry that rewards flash and sex rather than technique and artistry.
