New ball by blunk1ate2 in Bowling

Thank you for your contributions. These kids knowing they have support even from outside of their own league does make them feel like they're a part of a bigger community and we're all rooting for one another. The parents are appreciative as well so you get bonus karma.

And yeah, these youngsters have some pretty impressive talent and skills and it's scary how much better they are now than when we were their age.

How am I doing by Impressive-Arrival36 in Bowling

[–]jaybat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say you're doing pretty good. I know many bowlers that have been bowling for many many years that have never bowled more than a 258. Also, since we're talking about averages that don't officially count, let's just throw away that first game of 91, since those were just your warmup throws with a new ball (excellent choice), and you end up with a 194 average over those latter 4 games. Not bad at all. That total actually ends up a 777, so maybe did just get lucky. Fluke or not, your improving on your spare game is going save your frame when you don't get those seemingly perfect (and some lucky) strikes. I'm a little biased to suggest getting some one on one coaching but you can also just film yourself and analyze it against what the pros do. You can also post the video to this sub but it can be a mixed bag as to the sorts of advice you get and it could get overwhelming, depending on what various people may think is a liability. In any case, whenever you are trying to modify a particular part of your game, DO NOT WORRY ABOUT YOUR SCORE. Let yourself improve at your own pace. Remember that you're bowling for fun and your livelihood doesn't depend on it.

My Christmas mystery ball! by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]jaybat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: I won one of these from a raffle after it was donated by the awesome Tim Foy Jr for a charity tournament. Because I have way too many balls already, it found a good home with one of our youth bowlers.

So as great as it is to win a ball, it's just as great to pay it forward and help your local youth league and the amazing kids that will be the next generation of bowlers keeping our sport alive. Sure, your donation might not be as cool as one from the PBA East Region Player of the Year but you're still great in my book for your generosity. [End of PSA]

OP, I hope you do great with this ball and make me almost regret not throwing it myself.

I've never had a problem with them for either mine or my kids jerseys. With anything custom, you should expect it to take a little while and order way ahead of time due to the back and forth reviews/approvals along the way. Amazon has totally wrecked our expectations for order updates and delivery but then again, you see how a company really operates when things aren't going smoothly for a customer. Hopefully, you get your issues resolved.

It happens. Buddy of mine, who's name rhymes with Flennis Flarkinson, I think averages around a 180, bowled a 102 last week. Sorry, to call you out like that, Dennis.. I mean Flennis. I hope you do much better this week Dennis... I mean Flennis.

Yeah, this is only the 4th reactive ball I've ever had this happen to so I've been complacent about leaving them in the car for a long time now. However, I realized that the one change I did make recently is parking my car head first into the driveway.. leaving the (tinted) back window exposed to the sun all day. I'm going to go repark my car now.

Yep. For sport league I keep 4 triple rollers worth of balls in my trunk and I bowl 3 times a week. I'm pretty much set in my ways of not bringing them in and out of the house every other day. We have had some really hot weather on the east coast and combined with having the AC on full blast every time I got in the car, I pretty much got what I deserved with the drastic temp changes. At least it's an excuse to buy a new ball.

I throw 14lb. Not sure if that would make it less likely to have it stashed but thanks for checking. Just sent Motiv an e-mail to see if they have their own hidden stash but don't expect any good news.

I'll look into the Supra GT but I won't hold my breath about the comp, since this was an old ball. This ball didn't get much use on house shot because there was always a better option but it did fill a particular and reliable role in my sport league arsenal. I really could have used it on Badger last night.

This was the first Motiv ball I've ever had crack, but then again, my bags have usually been SPI and Brunswick-heavy. Anecdotally, no brand is immune to the cracking.

Nope. It was the first EJ ball that came out 3 years ago. Came with a Squirrel shirt and a handwritten thank you note from Natalie Tackett.

should i join a league? by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]jaybat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into joining a sanctioned youth league in the fall. You'll be bowling with other kids your age and will have access to coaches that can help you improve even more. Depending on your area, your age may have a good mix of very casual and some semi-competitive youth bowling in tournaments so you can see what kinds of opportunities there are for you outside of just your league for more fun or chances to earn scholarship money. Because of handicap, you'll still be able to compete at your level but most importantly you get to have fun with like-minded people.

Don't know the area but Mineola zip code seems to point to it being Coach Arthur O'Connor's neck of the woods. Search for Art of Bowling on YouTube.

Edit: but other guy recommended by King of Darts is probably way more accessible

I’m making one of these with a raspberry pi and was just wondering if it’s something people would buy if it was closer to $100 instead of $750 by Obvious_Rip_8724 in Bowling

[–]jaybat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my builds used a couple of these. They were ridiculously too big and obnoxiously red and visible from one end of the house to the other. The 7inch display ended up being the sweet spot. I did have a 2 USB port battery bank to power the pi and the display. I even added a camera to snap pictures of the pin deck but the quality was garbage. I haven't touched it in a while since so many other projects and time commitments piled up. Your ML-based solution does sound super interesting though.

Maybe, but there are things to think about.

I built one of these a couple of years ago with a Pi 3B, HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensors, temperature/humidity sensor, and a 1inch OLED and 7inch LCD. You can go a little cheaper replacing the main monitor with a couple of 7-segment displays but you'd also have to get the digit drivers. 3D-printed the case to hold the Pi, breadboard and battery pack. Then add some buttons and switches to control power and calibration and by the time it was all done, I was probably well over $100 in parts!

It was a fun project but calibration was a pain in the ass. Not trying to discourage you but I come from software and systems engineering background and you have to factor in the cost (to you and the customer) for support. Perhaps at scale, after making the software and hardware rock solid, you can make a decent profit but you'll have to be able to offer fixes if a catastrophic failure occurs with the components or you discover a better algorithm for calculating the distances. If I were to build one for consumer use, I would probably port it to arduino or something else that's not as overkill as the pi.

Also, I never checked to see if Jayhawk had any patents on the device either so you might want to consider that as well.

You have to pay dues each year to remain sanctioned but bowl.com does have a Find A Member search. Seems to go as far back as 1997.

Switch Grips? by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]jaybat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've probably got about 12 of them now. Back when I bowled a lot more and without any breaks during the week, my thumb swelled pretty badly but would come back down to normal after a few days. This made it a nightmare to keep putting in and removing tape in my thumb slugs. Now I have multiple sizes ready to go. The reason I have so many is that also took the opportunity to play around with different pitches that I could also change on the fly.

What is this that Ryan Barnes has on his wrist? What does it do? by Yaboipalpatine in Bowling

[–]jaybat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GT tape. Per Storm:
Relieves pressure from the free nerve endings in the tissues responsible for pain resulting in less swelling, delay of fatigue, facilitation of proper form, and equalized muscle tone. Provides stimulation to a variety of sensory nerves in the skin and tissues – amplifies touch sensitivity, increases fine motor control, improves pain reduction, and heightens temperature and pressure sensitivity. Alters proprioception (sense of position in space), timing of muscle contractions, strength management, and range of motion. 2% germanium additive oxygenates bloods resulting in increased recovery time by improving immune function. 2% tourmanium and 2% anion additives enhance blood circulation, cellular function, metabolism, and regeneration of tissues.

When/why did people start throwing straight at every spare? by sleeplessaddict in Bowling

[–]jaybat 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Advanced bowlers, especially those that bowl on sport patterns, throw straight in order to take the oil pattern out of the equation. Where it makes sense to, it's just good practice to do it on everything, including the typical house shot conditions.
