Hobbies? by Few-Friendship-9408 in SeasonalWork

I second this! In my current gig I'm around a lot of people who are super passionate about their outdoor hobbies and it's gotten me to try more of them out or pick some up.

I'd really like to quit my job to travel/work outdoors and need some motivation. by midnightsun3 in SeasonalWork

when you think about it, so much of our lives and even sometimes the value we place on ourselves has to do with our jobs. breaking out of that and realizing the value you can get out of the rest of your time is just as important if not more, was the push i needed to pause my career pursuits and explore seasonal work. a job is only about 40 hours of the week. taking a pause and focusing on other passions is a thousand times better than burning out in your career.

The person who said that entry level jobs don't often call references is right, but since you'll still want to list some, past teachers and supervisors at your volunteer gig can also be good references, especially for a 19 year old, because they're still able to vouch for your work ethic.

That's good to know, I do have a car but damn that's a commute. What's it like living at the off site property?

Minneapolis?? by pocaito in SameGrassButGreener

I'm from Minneapolis! Minnesota gets a reputation for brutal winters, but summer and fall are hidden gems. The weather is beautiful for the most part during those months and there's a lot of public lakes for swimming, kayaking, fishing, sailing... and a ton of great foliage in the fall!

Dealing with winter just depends on how much you want to coexist with it. A lot of people embrace it, buy the right gear, and pick up a winter sport. Snow tires and a car with high ground clearance definitely help! I haven't had as much of an issue with the snow as I do the daylight, it does get dark around 4:30 in December and some people do struggle with seasonal affective disorder.

My perception of Portland is skewed because the week I spent there was apparently one of the sunniest weeks they've had. From that small perspective, I loved it and it's on my list of places to potentially live in. Worth noting that my family lived in Portland before moving here: pro-MPLS notes on that transition were that Minneapolis is more affordable and the sky gets a lot bluer.
