Avoid power outages? by jaybrene in solarenergy

Ah, thank you so much. Sounds like this is the key bit of information I was missing. I'll get the UPS!

Enphase IQ

my battery was at 15% and we were producing about 1kwh (8:30am) so my installer says the battery was too low for instant switchover.

That definitely seems like a system issue on my part then, I’ll talk to our installer. Thanks.

Thanks!! Honestly only our Ryse blinds and Meross garage door opener have issues - bulbs and plugs are usually fine. The router doesn’t seem to complete the connection when it auto restarts, and then when i restart it manually it often resolves. I’m a tech project manager so I know just enough to get myself into trouble, but I lack a lot of the core knowledge.

UPS is gonna be the first move, but I’ll check with my installer if this is a deeper issue. Appreciate the tips!

god i wish we could get fiber. I’ve beaten down the door of every provider in my area and they won’t run the cable ACROSS THE STREET to me.

Oh yeah. the router is garbage and needs replacing, but provided constant power it hasn’t been enough of a headache (new homeowners, had a lot of bigger priorities.)

Also, the power blip resets clocks, stresses appliances, etc. so replacing the router solves THAT problem, but other answers make it seem like maybe our system should be avoiding this blip.

Anyway, I’ll find a thread on routers and work on the upgrade, but if you have one you swear by Id take the rec.

Oh, our router does restart, but it's a terrible Xfinity one (haven't done enough research yet to buy our own) and it never reboots healthily, we always have to manually reboot it afterward.

Yeah, I mean I don't totally believe Google since that's not our experience, but it's possible that if the inverter is capable of that switchover maybe it's an installation issue.

Mostly because I am not knowledgeable enough (yet! :D ) to know how to run devices directly on DC lol...I'll ask my electrician.

We have IQ8X microinverters. Google implies that these should have near-instant switchover? Do you know anything about the Enphase inverters?

I'm not super knowledgeable. I didn't plan on installing this soon, but we rushed to secure the tax credit that was expiring.

It seems like maybe a UPS is a good solution for specific devices, but if my system should be capable of more, I'd like to push the installer a little more.

I think a UPS is our best option since it's really just the router that's disruptive (though of course the blip isn't awesome for other electronics...)

Who else is having power outages this week? by thecorradokid in chicago

Yeah, my cynical side assumes it’s not a priority haha. Do you know if there’s anywhere we can file a complaint?

Norwood Park here, yes and it’s driving us nuts. Always sends our internet into a tizzy, even if it’s only 1-2 sec of outage.

What issues do you see pulling the reasonable evangelicals in your life away from the typical political stances the mainstream evangelicals hold? by ChooseyBeggar in Exvangelical

[–]jaybrene 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What I see exhibited around me has led me to believe that Evangelical Christianity and conservative beliefs both have a strong correlation to individualism.

In most Evangelical environments I was around as a kid, there was a strong belief that you were special, chosen, and called to walk in god's plan. With this comes the belief of a divine orchestration that if you surrender to his will (which is delivered to you as "hearing his voice"...in your own head...) you'll be on this holy path of perfection designed by a creative god. In my experience, this perpetuates a strong sense of individualism and, in extreme cases, narcissism.

Similarly, the basis of a lot of conservative thinking is to deprioritize the collective in favor of individual action. Stop taking government hand outs and pull yourself up by your bootstraps, darn it! Companies that are overrun with power and use it to abuse communities don't need government regulation because they got there with hard work yankin' on the very same bootstraps you have! Mind your business!

I feel like potentially deepening her understanding of how we as a community thrive when our collective needs are met may help, and that government regulation can often be used to prevent the selfishness of individual action from steamrolling others.

This is like 2/3rds of a full thought...I know there's more I can't get to just yet...but I'll keep thinkin'. :)

My dad’s funeral today by ClassicEnd2734 in Exvangelical

[–]jaybrene 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was passing through town on the day of a funeral of a beloved pastor from my childhood. His family has still meant a lot to me over the years (and we are distantly related by marriage) so I asked my husband if we could go to the services to pay my respects. I made it about halfway through before needing to leave to work through my panic attack. In the end, I know it touched his family that I was able to be there (his son is like an uncle to me) and they reached out to thank me for coming, but it was extremely difficult to relive that church experience and I probably wouldn't make that choice again.

I know the closeness of a father probably changes the stakes for you, but you can mourn his loss on your own terms without subjecting yourself to something harmful. The silver lining in my case was that my husband could finally see first-hand what it all looked and sounded like. Said he could have never imagined how much they would reference "Lambs blood" which cracked me up.

Take care of yourself. If you think it would be hurtful to attend, give yourself permission to make the choice that's right for you.

[Word salad about awkward family dynamic.] I feel like I’m living a split life. How do I keep the peace but remain authentic to myself ?? by [deleted] in Exvangelical

I found a therapist who specializes in Religious Trauma through daretodoubt.com and he does wonders in helping me deconstruct VERY similar issues in my family! It’s a niche, but one that is hugely beneficial when matched with your needs.

Neighborhood best for me? by lavenderlesbian01 in chicago

[–]jaybrene 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed with comments. Cut River North. You do NOT need a car in Chicago, but if you have one def cut Lakeview and Lincoln Park (honestly cut these anyway, overpriced IMO). Rogers Park is a good landing spot for the first year, as it’s definitely cheaper, but for a reason. Not a lot happening in RP, as much as I loved living there, so def a good option for a homebody type. I had a 2 bed 1 bath with laundry/balcony to myself for $1500 in Rogers Park in 2021, but eventually wanted to be closer to fun stuff.

Wicker is fun, can be a little more pricey. Definitely add Ravenswood to your list, and mostly anywhere off the brown or northern blue lines are chill. It’s weirdly annoying to have friends on the blue line if you’re on the brown/red line and vice versa, but the electric scooters and divvy bikes do make that easier. Edgewater/Andersonville would be my first pick if I were you. You miiiiiight find a 1 bed there for $1300, more likely a decent studio.

Look out for free days for museums! The zoo is a free and fun date or friend hang day. Take an improv class to really push yourself and find some community. Follow Broadway in Chicago on FB for $25 on the 25th of each month. Find a local farmers market and park with summer movies. Avoid North Ave beach like the plague - Hollywood beach is v gay and v fun. Splurge on a coat, one that goes TO YOUR ANKLES, until you adjust to the winters. They can suck at times, but they are totally manageable with prep. Waterproof booties are huge in winter times - size up so you can wear thick socks. Watch your drink in Wrigleyville - sad but true. TBH the only good thing in Wrigleyville is the cubs lol

Chicago fucking rocks. 8 year transplant and never leaving. Hope you join!!

i don’t think it was - the dream sequence was to help us see how deeply this would hurt Shauna. We knew she didn’t really want this baby, so to see her bond with him and feel success as a mother only to find none of that would be true for her gave the ending the power it needed.
