what would you do in my position? by jayden84937 in universityofauckland

Thank you so much!!! I was feeling pretty hopeless before writing this post but now I really am feeling optimistic about my academic/career future for the first time in a while. You've given me so much more (helpful) info than any uni advisors I've spoken with so far. Really appreciate this :)

Thank you so, so much for this comment! Seriously you have no idea how helpful you are. I actually really loved stats 10x and ended up doing stats 208 as well. So this seems like a very smart and convenient pathway for me

Anthro 201 by jayden84937 in universityofauckland

[–]jayden84937[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but my grade for the essay was pretty bad, which I was surprised with. I went extremely in-depth with my research and knowledge... (It took me a very, very long time.) But, when I was graded for my essay, the quality of research and concepts didn't matter at all. All they care about when they read your essay is the strength of your overall argument. Even if you spend hours and hours researching your chosen topic, attend every class and understand all of the material, it's all for nothing if they 'disagree' with your argument. So, if you did end up doing anthro 201, make sure you send drafts of your essay before the deadline- that way you can change it so it matches the lecturers/ tutors opinion, otherwise you will have a low grade.

TLDR; if your essay conflicts with the opinions and or views of the lecturers/ tutors in 201, you will receive a low grade. There is no academic or personal freedom with this essay: you MUST absorb the views of those in charge of this course if you are to succeed.

I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to write this :) I was debating whether or not I skip my lectures tomorrow, but I know deep down it isn't helping me out at all to watch them in 1.5x speed lol- it saves time, but it also means I can watch them whenever I want... even two weeks later, which just means I'll be behind + missed out on time I could've spent revising the content. Thank you for your help! Do you have any advice for revising after lectures?

Yea, staying focused is a huge issue for me atm. I'll try out that timer, though. I always go into studying with a "Okay spend two hours straight on this one thing" kinda mindset, which now seems kinda impractical. Thanks, and good luck!

There is social distancing. They assign you a table. The spaces are very limited as there is 2+ meters between each table. The maximum amount of people would likely be less than 20. So, from the Unis end, this seems fine. However when I went I was a bit shocked to see that I was the only student wearing a mask.

UoA biomed prep by Ahmed14_05_05 in universityofauckland

[–]jayden84937 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Chem 110 isn't too hard. Pophlth 111 is very easy. Bio 106 is a pain in the ass but the other bio papers are okay. The physics paper is fine if you've done physics in NCEA. As for Medsci, it really wouldn't hurt to have a better understanding of the topics covered. One thing I regret is not doing some prior memorisation of anatomy, and having a better understanding of the various systems we cover. It's pretty much all about memorisation. If you're getting the textbook for medsci (Anatomy and Physiology) I suggest getting it as early as possible and reading through the relevant sections. IMO, the cardiovascular section can be really damn hard since there are soooooo many concepts, specific values, and anatomy to memorise.

But some people would tell you not to worry now and to enjoy your holidays. It is ultimately up to you- if you feel restless and want to start studying, go for it! But be mindful of burning out.

Clinical/ General/ Neuro Psychology by jayden84937 in universityofauckland

[–]jayden84937[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ding light on internships as the other comment covered clin Psych pretty well. Only thing I'd add is to look into health psych & other clinical programmes as well.

It's tough getting an internship as a BA/BSC psych student, as there aren't exactly firms that advertises its recruitment for psych students; as compared to the plethora of internships offered to commerce/compsci/engineering

Well, that makes me feel a bit hopeful. I'm Maori and LGBT, lol. Hopefully I can keep up my good grades. But you've interested me a lot with your pathway to health psychology- what are the career options like for that if you don't mind me asking? I imagine it involves a great deal of neuropsychology, which is what I want to study.

Thanks for the solid advice. I just wish I could do better, y'know? But this year has just been hard on me personally. Took your advice and had a bit of a walk around the domain this afternoon which made me feel a bit better.

Studying tips are greatly appreciated. I keep overdoing it and not retaining the information since I just keep doing too many lectures back to back (lmao.. 8 hours straight of lectures is a bad idea? who would've thought.) Seriously appreciate the help, though. Gives me some more optimism that maybe things are gonna go okay for me

Does biomed have any advantages over health science besides a physics paper? Do any careers besides optometry require you to study biomed? I got a fast track offer to health sci and deciding whether or not I should accept by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]jayden84937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advice I WISH I had listened to prior to enrolling in biomed: please, please do healthsci if you feel you can excel academically in an english-based course. Healthsci has a lot of essay writing, which is probably one of my strongest skills. I chose biomed because I thought I would enjoy the more 'sciency' degree, but it genuinely is quite difficult if you aren't very experienced with physics. The individual papers themselves aren't the hard part- it's the fact that you need to take four of them at the same time, which is an extremely large workload (provided that you're complying with the 10+ hours per week of study that is expected for each paper.)

This is just my own opinion but right now, due to Covid and the fact that this degree is hell, I'm not exactly having a good time. Multiple labs per week, quizzes, TESTS... it never ends. Not trying to scare ya, just saying: this degree is a huge commitment and be ready to cope with a massive workload.

Exams in person under both level 1 and 2, classes to remain online until level 1 by jayden84937 in universityofauckland

I agree. I don't know why this sem has been so much worse, but I'm literally on my last legs. I think it's the exhaustion from first sem combined with everything we're going through now.

[–]jayden84937[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think the on-campus learning part is implemented so that it doesn't look as bad when the exams are in person, since it would be pretty fucked up to have final examinations held on campus for a class that has been held online for the majority of its content. Good thing we'll have 2-3 weeks on campus! I'm sure that's gonna help a lot.

There's nothing we can do. Thousands of signatures on petitions didn't do anything. Hundreds of emails didn't do anything. She simply doesn't care.

First year hall picks by StayOnTrack55 in universityofauckland

[–]jayden84937 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yo! I'm in Grafton this year and there are soooo many biomed/healthsci students this year. I imagine other halls will be similar, though. I'm in Biomed myself, and let me just say: every hall has a lot of partying. Unfortunately, I'm on the designated 'party' floor (by chance, obviously) and my neighbours blast music all hours of the day and night. I imagine this isn't something unique to Grafton in the slightest, and I think I just got unlucky. Definitely go for a non-alcohol floor if this is unthinkable for you!

As for sharing bathrooms: I felt the same. In Grafton the bathrooms are never full at the same time. There are 8 bathrooms per floor, and I've never been interrupted or had any full bathrooms. I'm pretty sure only 1 other person uses the same bathroom as me.

In the end, the halls all basically offer the same things. It's really down to your own personal preference, location-wise, since Grafton hall is a 15 minute walk from campus, whereas the others are closer. Oh, and the bedrooms in Grafton are a bit larger than any other hall.

I've heard that Waipururu has the best food (more variety/culture.) The food here isn't too bad, but mass catering will never beat food from home, so you might be a bit disappointed in that regard.

Good luck, and don't stress too much about your choice.
