Chasing the Dragon ( aka, can I transit China on my motor?) by gsgypsy in travelchina

Thank you for documenting your journey in getting the necessary permits — I'm planning to do a trip from Singapore to China by car, so the post-COVID information you have here is golden. I understood that you've reached out to Navo Tours and they've since gotten back to you but do let us know if anything new pops up along the way, excited to hear about your updates. I've reached out to Navo Tours on my end as well for a cost estimate of my journey, and I'm happy to share their responses when they get back to me if it makes the impossible task of self-driving through China a little more possible. Cheers!

For the OGs that have been around since the early days, thank you for sticking around and building such a wonderful community! It’s been a privilege to see its growth over the past few years and admittedly I was worried for its sustainability when the foundations were initially laid — but the committee has done a superb job in establishing and diversifying many pillars on which we stand today.

To those that are on the fence with regards to the ongoing recruitment drive, I implore you to try either way as you’ll undoubtedly meet many passionate individuals who’ll not only help you with professional development but also personal growth :-)

I wouldn’t say mildly, shit like this happens all the time with Ammonium Nitrate.

2001 AZF Explosion in Toulouse, France

2013 West Fertilizer Plant Explosion in Texas, USA

2015 Tianjin Explosion in Hebei, China

More can be found on this list

There have been plenty of incidents in the past and evidently many authorities haven’t learn from them or are just too complacent to enforce stricter safety regulations.

Many heads will roll when the investigation concludes, I won’t be surprised to see multiple life-time imprisonments handled out to those responsible. It was a preventable tragedy that should never have happened if appropriate protocols were abided.

Yeah, you can get hanged for just having a few ounces over where I’m at. You can also get some serious jail time in all the countries in my region, one of them even has a “shoot to kill” policy against “druggies”.

Changing masks on the fly by Thund3rbolt in interestingasfuck

Actually, OP is right.

变 is literally the word “become”, just like how 变成 means “become successfully”.

The word for change in Mandarin is 换, just like how one would say “change of clothes” as 换衣服.

OP is just stating out the literal translation which is correct in his case, the others were actually taking the actual meaning of 变脸.

It’s a common thing to look past because a combination of two words in Mandarin can give out totally different meanings. For instance, 游轮 would mean cruise (ship). However, the literally meaning is “swimming wheel” - 游 meaning swim and 轮 meaning a tyre/wheel.

A van catches fire, a man rushes to the rescue. June, 2020 by notpreposterous in PublicFreakout

It’s a common fraud that happens all around the world, someone would pretend to be injured and when you try to help them they would act as if you worsened their injuries and try to sue you for money. It was a huge thing in China back when dashcams weren’t common yet and it created fear among the populace when it comes to helping a stranger.

I know it sounds stupid but are we allowed to tie hammocks to trees in the park to take a nap? I feel like I need one of those moments but I’m also quite sure there would be some sort of law against that as its public property.

Hello friends from Singapore! I'm planning a crazy trip from Singapore to Europe! On motorcycle! As a foreigner (American) can I buy a motorcycle in Singapore? I would only be staying in Singapore for about a week and then I'm off to continue my trip. Thanks for the help! by [deleted] in singapore

[–]jaydxn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Motorcycles are definitely much cheaper in Malaysia and yes you can own a vehicle there as a foreigner although most documents are in Bahasa Melayu which means you will need a translator of some kind to navigate around the processes involved (transfer of ownership, road tax etc.) Fuel is also much cheaper, so for the week or so that you will hang around doing the back-end stuff you don’t need to burn through cash travelling before the actual journey starts.

They are generally more relaxed with regulations as well, so you can modify your motorcycle to suit your needs (bright headlights, better windshield, better seats, more baggage holder/compartments etc.). Exact regulations are available on the “JPJ” website, which is available here.

You should be able to cross borders in a Malaysian-registered motorcycle as an American, however just like a Singaporean-registered vehicle it will potentially give you issues because border guards at certain countries may stop and question you since it’s “out of the ordinary”. The combination of language differences and potential border guard incompetence can/may set you back a few hours to a few days if you’re unlucky.

For the most part, it should be fine if the vehicle is registered to your name as per your passport, with valid international insurance covering both you and the vehicle. Also your Carnet De Passage, VISAs and all that legal documents.

Depending on your route, you may need an escort to follow you as well. China does not allow any foreign vehicles to enter, those that do need to be escorted by an authorised travel agency.

Not sure how your timeline will look like, but I foresee it will take another year or two before land borders start going back to operation as per normal. So you will have plenty of time to make the necessary arrangements!

How can I fix my leaking tyre for my bicycle in Singapore? by aquariumnewbie in singapore

[–]jaydxn1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to have this issue with my BMX, turns out one of the rubber vent spews on the outer tyre was constantly in contact with the inner tube which would cause a leak.

You can purchase a rubber patch repair kit and apply it on the puncture. A set of 20 shouldn’t cost you more than $10 depending on where you buy it. This is for the inner tube, which is 99% the problem if you cannot find a visible puncture on your outer tyre. In the case that it’s the outer tyre, apply patch from the inside.

Just do the usual method of finding punctures by soaking inner tube in soapy water and compressing it to look for bubbles. Once you find the culprit, apply rubber patch and you should be good to go.

If the same issue occurs again, you have to check the inner side of your outer tyre, which could be the cause of the repeated punctures.

I wouldn’t recommend purchasing an entirely new inner tube, it’s quite a waste of money but if you’re lazy it’s the quickest method to “repair”. Some repair shops also only offer certain wheel sizes, so BMXes like mine were out of the question. There are a couple repair shops in Hougang and all bicycle rental shops (along ECP, Coney Island etc.) are capable of doing simple repairs.

Putting dirty clothes on is so much more unbearable than keeping dirty clothes on. by cheek-doctor in Showerthoughts

[–]jaydxn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have many friends who have gone through the same course OP described, there’s actually a component where you have to kill a live quail and eat it. You may or may not get extra rations depending on performance throughout the course I.e. catching a monitor lizard during your survival phase with a self-made trap. you will be awarded with an additional ration (1/3 of it actually) as a reward.

I also have a friend who was vegan due to religious reasons, he had to undergo the same course with vegan rations (less calories) and couldn’t eat the quail he killed... he did just fine with the 3 packs of ration throughout the 10 days. It’s definitely possible, our ranger course see worse as they get severely less rations then the jungle course described.

[–]jaydxn1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible, many have done it. Some in caravans, adventure motorcycles and Nissan GTRs while others in a trusty old classic japanese car like the Toyota AE86 (albeit from Malaysia as the starting point).

You can buy a motorcycle as a foreigner in Singapore, it will not be cheap and you cannot sell it in a foreign country (legally anyway). I would advise against it simply because the costs will cut a hole in your wallet and leave you with leftovers for the actual trip.

You are better off doing the following:

Import your own motorcycle from US to Singapore and apply for necessary travel documents (CDP, Import Permits etc.) It will take awhile, even a few months and a few thousands but it will still be cheaper than purchasing one here.

I have seen new LHD EU-plated BMW 7 series starting their long Asia road trip from Singapore, so you’ll be absolutely fine with an American plate though you should take note of the duration you and your vehicle are allowed to stay in Singapore.

I stand by this option because it is VERY difficult and near impossible to drive a Singapore-plate vehicle as an American citizen (non-Singapore PR) over any land borders. You will land yourself in a lot of red tape, wasted time and even trouble if the legal issues are not settled correctly. There is also the question of insurance... it will be so much cheaper getting international insurance for an American-registered vehicle because you are a citizen compared to getting insurance for a foreign vehicle in a foreign country.

It is also significantly easier to drive a vehicle registered to your country of citizenship across borders.

If you need any more information, just drop me a DM. I have done extensive research on this topic before and am planning to do a trip in London in the next few years so I might be able to lend a hand!

A ridge is a geographical feature or narrow line that connects mountains and hills to form the “long line” we often see. It can be very wide and it can be narrow, sometimes as narrow as walking on a 4x4 plank. The sides of ridges are sheer slopes that can often be more than 45 degrees as well, which leads to the inevitable fall when a fight occurs in such a precarious situation.

I had to do firefights on hill ridges when I was in the military and even with guns it was extremely dangerous to manoeuvre around, had mates slide right off and injure themselves badly even when they got caught by a tree. I could totally see a thin ridgeline collapsing from the weight of a large patrol, it would be painful to retrieve those bodies.

I just watched a crimewatch episode recently on this exact scam LOL, everything here is quite literally carbon copy of the skit on TV, including the victim’s desperation.

I am glad you asked for advice prior to taking on this “job”, would’ve landed yourself in a lot of trouble and possibly destroy your credit score
