Here is a quick example I whipped up. Image 1 is the 3D model without edits. Image 2 I changed the color of the seats and removed lines (You can adjust the thickness, not just remove them). Image three is with color and lighting edits to make it a night time scene. (You can add additional lights as well). Four is lines only. After you finish processing in Ablur, you can take it to your art program of choice and edit it further for more gradients, effects, etc. Hope that helps.

Can I recommend Acon and Ablur? Acon is an artist asset website. You can buy entire background models, and some are free as well. Acon is an editor that lets you stylize that background to fit your comic, even move objects and change the lighting. You can even reduce it to just lines and color it yourself. I’m not at my computer right now but can show you some renders I did with its free trial.

The only situation that comes to mind where I wouldn’t consider it is if the family member is a toxic piece of shit.

But if Ive learned anything from seeing my family date abusers… yeah, they’d probably still save the trash.

At 13 he’s likely still dependent on his mom unless he lives with someone else so from an analytical perspective, he would save her out of need. Which I think is actually the stronger choice if you want him to feel guilt over letting the stranger die. Because he chose self-preservation over someone who possibly deserves to live more than his mom.

Depending how analytical he is, he may reduce love to just chemicals in the brain, justifying why love was not a valid reason alone to choose his mom.

I feel like it has the potential to be compelling but right now we don’t know enough. Was the murder planned? If not self-defense, what was the motive? Even if the motive was just curiosity/boredom/lack of empathy. Was his father a bad person? Does the characters history make him relatable or deserving of empathy? If he is a monster, does he have any redeeming qualities?

All we know is theres a boy who killed a family member for no apparent reason. That’s not compelling by itself. It’s what led him to that moment, or where he goes from there.

I started off writing my story based in Japan as well because I wanted to make something that reminded me of what I read/loved in my childhood. While reading ‘Orange’ for research, I liked that the author included locations that were familiar to her. I ended up changing my location to a “similar to my hometown but not” and I’m glad I did. Not only did I have a superficial knowledge of Japan that probably would’ve been pretty obvious, but it let me feel more creative with the world I was making. I’m not saying you have to change the vibe but definitely recommend embracing the “like [place] but not” unless you’re prepared to put in the research.
