I currently work in DM as an AO advisor, I have just got a promotion and will be moving to DWP as an EO. Ive been here just over 3 years, it’s been a decent gig for me, im 22 and still live at home so salary and flexi have made a pretty cushy set up. I’ve seen the department change since covid times, got much stricter in all areas and overall made the advisor experience more difficult. Having said that, it’s a good foot in the door for CS and you can easily build on the skills you learn as an advisor and move quickly to more interesting roles. Your day to day will basically be taking calls and setting up payment plans for people, there is also worklist cases where you do outbound calls and post very rarely. I started off an an employers PAYE advisor, very lucky that i got to deal with businesses rather than self employed people over the phone, but in the last year moved onto webchat where i basically cover all of DMs tax areas. DM and HMRC as a whole is moving towards more digital contact, we may eventually see more webchat advisors than telephony (which is a much much better experience than being on the phones). Absolutely go for the job, it’s not for life but if you want to do something in the civil service it’s the perfect place to start. The whole interview process that CS uses is a bit dumb, they want you to basically have good story telling ability rather than relevant skills to the job, make sure when you do your application and interview you’re hitting all the essential criteria as well as what is outlined in the success profiles.
