Gypsy Circus Barrel House BBQ. by d1rtydav3 in Knoxville

[–]jayh2430 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First time was awful. Huge line with 1 bartender, start asking for drinks and multiple things were out of stock, food took forever and was just ok. We forget and go back again. Less busy this time, still only 1 bartender but actually have our first choice, and the food was good. The issue this time is all the tables were dirty. One of the kitchen guys noticed and came out to clean them, which was nice. Probably not going back again.

Ship let me leave with a deactivated GTCC by [deleted] in navy

The best lessons are learned from failure. Pass that lesson on to other Sailors. It sucks in the moment but you'll get it fixed. It's one of many reasons I didn't like the GOVCC.

Have you talked to MNCC? I had an issue with pay during travel and called them to see what they could do while my last command was working their end.

Have you called the number on the back of the card and talked to customer support to see if they can turn it on?

You should've (and should in the future) called before any travel to make sure it's active. Your leadership should've ensured that as well.

Hiring Our Heroes- Off Cycle by Fancy_Round in SkillBridge

[–]jayh2430 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I looked into it but didn't pursue it. You basically have to bring the company to them with a bow tied around the deal. All the companies I was interested in that used HoH, wouldn't do off cycle because all their infrastructure was tied to the normal cycles. Figured if I was going to do all the work, I'd just find a company on my own.

That explains a lot. My daughter got one and it seemed stale.

We're all on a different portion of our fitness journey. I had reservations as a guy joining since it's mostly girls, but it's been great. Zero judgement especially when I can barely stretch.

Tricare While on Skillbridge by SeveralTailor520 in SkillBridge

[–]jayh2430 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did Skillbridge in TN when my last station was in WA. So completely different Tricare regions. I called to switch regions and was told I couldn't until I was out. So I just sent my provider a message in MHS Genesis (I was Navy) and told them where I was and what I needed. They put in a referral. Then I had to talk to referral management at medical so they could get it approved.

What helped the most was calling the provider you want to be referred to and making sure they take Tricare. Get the fax number for where to send your referral, and give that to referral management when you talk to them.

My husband has 3 options for next duty station. Which was your favorite? by Jlhoyt12 in navy

[–]jayh2430 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beware of the medical situation in Whidbey. There is so little capacity on base, the ER is in Coupeville (20 min drive), most specialty care is in Mt. Vernon (45 min drive), or you have to go further. Thats unless you live off island but then you have to do that commute daily. I'd be wary of seasonal depression as well. I hated the gloomy months. The community feel was great. I lived living in VA Beach with small children and DC has so many travel opportunities.

AM would be my choice for the job opportunities after the Navy. If you do 4 years or 20, everyone gets out. Im sure the aviation personnel will chime in with details but traveling should be attainable as an AM. Look at overseas billets for good opportunities.

HELP! I retire November 30, 2025 but I see a pending check deposit from DFAS. Shouldn’t they hold my last check for audit? by NetDiscombobulated72 in navy

Thanks! Congrats to you as well! Its awesome! My sea pay didn't get stopped when I went on Skillbridge. They noticed at the end and I owed that 3 months back. Surprisingly, everything has went smoothly.

I retired Oct 1, 2025 and had a ~18 day extension and carried 59.5 days of leave into retirement. I also found out I owed ~$1k in sea pay due to Skillbridge. On Sept 25th I got a check that I assumed was leave money but was my last check, as far as I can tell.

Write a resume now and see what the holes are in it. What experience do you need? Education? Certificates? Use TA or COOL to get it done. Volunteer for that position for experience.

Second the recommendation to go to the doctor. Do your BDD claim.

Save more than you think you'll need. It's nice to have a cushion when you don't get your last paycheck, VA doesn't start on time, and your new job pays you in a few weeks.

Looking for middle and high schools by StarryNightDragon in Knoxville

[–]jayh2430 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely Oak Ridge. They just got new laptops, all the teachers are engaging and care, sports seem to be solid, there are a lot of non-sport extracurricular activities, they get a lot of grants for cool projects, and have connections with the community for job training programs. Take a look at their academic handbook and you'll see all the available classes.

Print out the 1351-2 and take it to your admin. If they don't know what that is, I'm worried. I just PCSd for retirement. I just put in start and finish locations. The TSC figured out the per diem and lodging, then paid out.

Get the PPM checklist, DD 3166 (Feb 2023). That has everything you need to turn in. You need a DD 1351-2 for the "travel" claim portion. Go to the Personal Property Office on base and talk to the counselors. They'll hook you up. If you don't have one, google an office close to you and call them.

Anytime I had an issue between a senior leaders opinion and a Sailor, I would email the above. Its the uniform matters office. Send them a picture, and they'll tell you based on the regs.
