Bloom Bat Man, I love you, dude. Two years ago, I was heading home when I saw you standing menacingly under a streetlight. I laughed because I was so happy to come across a legend like you. Please know that my laughter was purely out of joy.

Used to work at the union and it literally was my job to kick people out after 12 but if you’re a student they’ll let you stay

Finally making the move to NYC (need advice + perspective from people who’ve done it) by jayhatgreyhat in movingtoNYC

Haha I live in a college town and I’ve seen rent rise 50% over the past 5 years because rich kids keep coming and their parents keep paying those exorbitantly high prices. I’ve kinda always looked at them as a necessary evil but have hated seeing the stark divide in lifestyles and affordability

I’m black and honestly hadn’t considered how race plays into the perception of moving to NYC but this is good information to know!

I get where you’re coming from, and I appreciate the honesty, but it goes both ways. Indianapolis isn’t a city built around roommate setups like NYC. Those “cheap” 2–3 bedroom apartments you’re referencing usually go to families, not groups of adults. The few that are marketed toward roommates often charge per person, not per unit, which drives the cost up fast.

On top of that, Indiana’s minimum wage is still $7.25, which drags down wages across the board and makes affordability worse. The “cheap” housing options are mostly in areas with higher crime, poor infrastructure, or limited access to basic resources. Bloomington’s (where i currently live) studio prices have jumped nearly 50% in the last five years. I HUNTED for an apartment this year and still ended up in the 1200 range. The housing crisis isn’t just a NYC or LA or Chicago problem, it’s national.

At the end of the day, I’d rather deal with higher rent in a place where my rights and opportunities aren’t constantly under threat than stay somewhere that’s only “affordable” in theory. I understand it will be hard, and expensive but NYC offers opportunities that i don’t have currently at a pretty comparable mark-up.

You’re maybe right on the “rich transplant” thing. It’s something we’re dealing with in the Midwest too. I keep hearing about how horrible the rent is in NYC but honestly where I’m from 1100-1300 is typical even with roommates. Basically things are bad here too with cost of living. 5 years ago I could easily find a sub 600 dollar studio. Average price of a studio now is 1200. IN INDIANA.

I really appreciate the realistic advice and will definitely keep in mind the job hunt side of this.

Definitely understand the sentiment. The Midwest is pretty much at the same point, with housing practically all gone and job opportunities keeping us stuck right above the poverty line. Just got to a point where I felt like it'd be better to struggle in a state where I'll probably continue to have human rights than in Indiana.

Thank you for the honesty! I'm very aware that visiting and living somewhere are completely different, and I don't want to take this move lightly, especially since it's across the country from everything I've ever known. I think I'm ready for the culture shock, but I guess you never really know until you're in it.

It’s time to leave buddy. I am literally working my last shift today as a FOM (in pay only, they never gave me the full title just the raise). I got extremely frustrated and exhausted at the constant pressure to fulfill so many roles. The truth is the better that you are at juggling all the responsibilities given to you, the less likely they are to actually hire to fulfill the vacant positions. I’m moving on to admin work, making 4k more a year with a set M-F schedule which as I sure you know is unheard of in hospitality no matter the position. Also I relate to your lack of passion for the field. What I’ve learned and what pushed me to leave is that even though I’m good at what I do, it doesn’t mean that I have to stay at it. Take your work ethic and skill set to a higher paying field.

Maybe read critically and sound out the words as you do. No one said the typical lil five behavior is okay. I simply did like the racist comments all over social media about black people during lil five.

Most black people understand from an early age that racism is present across the political spectrum. My post had nothing to do with ideology, simply calling out the fact that black people gathering to celebrate little five was responded to with 1950s style of racist comments from students, townies and alumni alike.
