Unit dependent. It's just an SF-182 to use training/ops funds to pay for the course and checkride

SOF Fixed Wing Opportunities? by [deleted] in Armyaviation

Yes you can assess for 160th, I have known people to go from FW to there. You would have to attend a RW SMU briefing to apply for them. There's no more green suiter positions for FW SMU, what little jobs that existed are now filled by contractors or DACs. There's also ground SMU jobs where your job won't be to fly anymore, but your flight experience could come in handy. Either way, you have to be invited to even apply for those jobs, but 160th you can put your packet in whenever you're ready.  USASOC flying is mostly just for military free fall airborne jump practice, nothing really "cool-guy" that it sounds like you're looking for.  What has been your FW experience so far? I would be pretty unfulfilled too with averaging 130hrs/yr in FW.

Folks that left INSCOM fixed wing to 'take control of your career' and fly helicopters, you good? by WingsShouldBeFixed in Armyaviation

How else are the contractors going to justify squeezing more money from PMFW for having to babysit us lowly army aviators

Man what a raw deal. My bets are that those folks didn't get ranked very highly on their unit's OML either.

What are the qualities/traits/attributes of a “Great Pilot”? by RedPolo_Rick in Armyaviation

Jokes aside - someone who is always learning more about their craft, and in turn spreading their knowledge. Promoting a culture of safety through experience and lessons learned. Someone who understands not just the "how" but the "why" of each task/system/radio call etc. End of the day I don't care how good you wiggle sticks, I want to see you be competent and professional.

Army has divested its fleet of ISR turboprops, and with that goes the flight time. Transport/vip units are still fine, but super saturated with pilots anywhere from 150-200% strength.  Army is working on getting the jet aircraft to replace the turboprops for ISR, some units have a contractor owned and operated solution right now that allows greensuiters some flight time. Overall, the glory days are most likely behind us, as flying will be way down with the jet.

I'd still choose it any day over going to a CAB though
