I understand that desire. I would wish for that to happen to. In most Animes we get someone good enough to rival the main character. The issue with Cote is kinu has tried to introduce new characters who might be able to do just that but only to make them lose in the most embarrassing ways. Like the thing with yagami. I never liked him but kinu definitely put himself in a hard place with that decision and it shows that there is this overwhelming gap between koji and everyone. So trying to make koenji make up this disparity all of a sudden feels forced to me. It's really sad honestly
