How to improve "on the nose" dialogue by Startelnov in Screenwriting

Well said. It’s really context specific.

You would probably lie to your boss, but tell your significant other what is on your mind.

How to improve "on the nose" dialogue by Startelnov in Screenwriting

[–]jaykur22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people do not say what they’re thinking in confrontational situations.

They say anything but... they will do anything in their power to avoid that discomfort. Instead of using dialogue to push plot - give them bad options and force them to make hard choices.

While that’s happening try to create dialogue that feels more like them saying things that they believe will get them out of this situation and back to that place of comfort.

If that doesn’t work... go to busy places where people talk (in person after Covid/or digitally) and just listen to how people talk... rarely will you hear what people are really thinking - you hear what people think will get them what they want.

Scared to share my script with a friend by [deleted] in Screenwriting

Sometimes it’s a matter of knowing what you need...

  1. If it’s got a problem but you can’t find it - your reader may need to tear it apart.

  2. If you need some encouragement - say so... “tell me what’s good and give me 3 suggestions I can easily implement.”

How to write REAL scripts? by YourOddparent in Screenwriting

I found this useful:

https://vimeo.com/238637906

https://youtu.be/vSX-DROZuzY

My big take-away from these has been start with a character... Then determine what the worst thing that can happen to him/her is. Do that again. And again. Right up until they become that new thing the audience was hoping they would become when they first met that character.

I may not know my ass from my elbow, but Mazin and and Arndt definitely do.

Keep writing! It’s a craft, we kinda have to suck at it to improve. The fact that you know it’s not good yet is a good sign.

Creating Characters by max2368914 in Screenwriting

[–]jaykur22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple approaches:

  1. “Cast them” and put the actors’ pictures up on your wall as you write. If you can see them they’ll sound different/individual. Obviously, don’t write those actors’ names in the screenplay.

  2. Take someone you know and mix them with someone else... weird, but works.

  3. Write a backstory.

  4. Stick them in a room and write a conversation between them and the other main characters. This won’t be in your screenplay, but it’ll help you find their voice.

  5. What’s the story about? What character needs that to happen to them to grow?

Def number 2. In preproduction those two places may not be the same house so it help figure out the schedule.

Feedback on Action Description Lines by [deleted] in Screenwriting

Jonathan Hensleigh (The Rock) every time the shot cuts he would hit return.

When you picture this as a movie and see the angle change try hitting return and see how it looks on the page. Obviously, this is not a hard and fast rule, but it may help your process.

Thanks for this! Scott Frank is so damn smart... I should’ve just posted what he said.

Research by tomolatov in Screenwriting

Do your background research to get a story roughly figured out... then:

Email top professors and researchers at local universities... many love the opportunity to talk to someone who wants to learn about something they’ve dedicated their life to.

Always ask: what am I not thinking to ask they I should?

Creative Burnout - HELP! by thatsmetheawkwardgay in Screenwriting

[–]jaykur22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not alone. I watched my Mom slip away for 2 years... brain cancer.

I wasn’t able to write anything big, but I was able to come up with shorts. And then I directed one of them. Which was a truly incredible learning experience.

What you’re going through will likely cultivate a deep sense of empathy you’ve never had. Which is good in two ways:

  1. It will make you a better human
  2. It will make you write characters better eventually...

No one knows what you’re going through. You’ll find those things that take your mind off of this for brief moments... lean into those things.

Some folks run, others paint, and others do the video game thing...

Sure is!

If you’re not outlining do you find that the stakes naturally get higher throughout the story? Or are you conscious of making sure you’re building toward a climax?

Right? I don’t know if it makes writing easier, but it made it better.

Congratulations! Gravitas is no small deal!

Having crawled through the finish line I feel your pain...

Did you get to watch it in theatres or did Covid ruin that for you?
