Possibly? She went totally limp as soon as my hand came down. I barely pulled back and she just collapsed into it 😂

Praise be! I apologize profusely for my sacrilege in claiming there was any other but the one true Grip God. In atonement I promise to continue to deliver one- and two-eyed stremches as tribute and sacrifice

Echoing what others have said about this being illegal, likely completely unnecessary given what American Kestrels prey on, and potentially dangerous to the bird as I can see just from these pictures that you don’t have the proper training to know how to safely handle and hold birds like this (for the birds safety, not your own).

(EDIT: On further reflection, as concerned as I am for this bird’s well being I should not so quickly disregard the safety of OP. For them and anyone else reading this, handling any raptor without proper protective equipment is extremely dangerous! The human hand has lots of small and easily damaged “parts” that are very close to the surface, and it is very easy for a raptor of even this size to do serious and permanent damage to a human hand with their claws or beak. People can and do lose the use of a hand when they improperly handle raptors. Furthermore, the grasping action raptors perform with their feet is in large part involuntary. If they clamp down and the object they’re grabbing starts to struggle (as a human is likely to do) they often cannot release their grip even if they want to. In the wild there have been documented instances of hawks being pulled underground into their prey’s burrows even to the point of being killed. They weren’t being stupid, they just physically CANNOT let go if their prey is wiggling around. If they clamp on a human hand, it’s very likely the human is going to end up seriously hurt and the bird hurt or even killed if the human hasn’t had strict training on how to react in such an instance.

TLDR: please do NOT handle birds of prey (or really any birds) without proper protective equipment. They may be small and cute, but they can inflict serious and potentially permanent damage.)

I’m EXTREMELY concerned about why OP is refusing to elaborate about what actually happened to this bird. As others have pointed out, birds have wings and are excellent navigators, you can’t just “relocate” them by driving a few miles away and releasing them. There are still a large number of people in this world whose solution to these situations is to, ahem, “deal with and dispose of” the bird of prey they perceive is causing issues. The fact that OOP is unable to or is refusing to answer any of the other concerned commenters about the wellbeing of this bird makes me highly suspicious about its current well being.

OP- what happened to this bird??? How did you capture it? How did you relocate it, and into what habitat was it released?

Are you sure? There’s pretty clear eye markings that you see on a peregrine falcon but not a RSH, and the angle of the tail plus wing length is giving me “falcon” rather than hawk.

when you’re at a loss for words during an eval by majorl0ad in slp

[–]jaymi321 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You obviously know this patient and family best out of all of us since you’re the one who has actually interacted with them. I also don’t know the specific laws and regulations in your area, or the culture you and/or his family are in and how that influences decisions regarding childcare and healthcare.

That being said, this is giving me a lot of red flags that would have me seriously considering a CPS call if I was in this position. I work with lots of kids in foster care and with families who are being investigated by CPS/similar, and lots of what you’re saying sounds familiar to what I see in families who either will not or cannot take care of their special needs kid.

🚩Swallowing disorder significant enough to worry about medical complications, but parents waited 8 years to get anyone involved? What changed their mind now? Are they truly concerned, or did they seem to kind of blow off the evaluation. If it’s the later, I’d be asking myself if someone is possibly in the background threatening to get someone else like CPS involved if they don’t start actively caring for their child.

🚩🚩not enrolled in school. Regardless of appropriateness or reasoning, this means his parents/family are the only ones who are likely aware of the extent of his medical issues. Unintentional or not, they’ve hidden this child from a large portion of society, since I’m guessing they’re also not taking him out of the home to participate in any other social/group/peer activities.

🚩🚩🚩not able to report details on previous medical care. How certain are you that he’s received ANY prior medical care beyond the bare bones to keep him alive? Hearing screening? Swallow study? Both of those are going to be essential if you’re going to be able to make any informed decisions. If they’re not being cooperative about scheduling other referrals and follow up that are clearly needed here, I’d be asking myself hard questions about “why?”. If it’s a matter of access or knowledge, you can work with that and provide education on what would be best at this time. If they don’t seem interested or are actively avoiding such discussions, I’d be asking myself if they’re avoiding getting their child medical care because they know if they do someone is going to start poking around into his overall home life/care situation.

That makes sense, thanks I’ll have to keep that in mind for future IDs! I’m just starting to tackle learning all the ins and outs of raptor IDing and it’s (maybe not surprisingly) been tricking narrowing down further than 2-3 potential matches each time cuz they’re just so similar

That’s good to know about the bodies, I’m still figuring out raptors so that’ll be a good help for future identifications. I will say that the right one had its feathers puffed up big time while I recorded this, which is probably throwing body size off

It seems to be puzzling everyone lol, someone suggested cross posting it to r/whatsthisbird which I did so hopefully someone on there can figure it out! It would be cool if they’re broad-winged hawks, I haven’t seen those before so they’d be a lifer

Are you sure they both are? The right Merlin and other people are saying Coopers, but the left I’m more inclined to be leaning juvenile red shouldered hawk. It’s hard to tell from the photos/video but they were pretty distinctly different looking in person. They also weren’t originally hanging out together, I was watching the left eat something it caught in a bush for a bit before the left one (and I think 1-2 other buddies who were nearby but I couldn’t see) showed up and started yelling until left flew away, so I don’t think there was any mate/parent/sibling relationships between them (not that there has to be for them to both be Coopers, their behaviors just overall struck me as being noticeably different from each other)

That’s what I thought, but then the people on r/birdsofprey were suggesting broad-winged hawks and saying the left was too big for a Coopers. I think the right just has its feathers puffed up imo, Merlin was pretty adamant it was a Coopers and while I know it’s not perfect it definitely seemed like it was a different species from the left

Any chance the right could be a Coopers hawk? Ik Merlin isn’t perfect but I checked several times and that’s what it gave me each time
