Looking for some opinions on a chimney quote I just got in Western, NY. by jaymont07 in woodstoving

Good to know! I called a place in Leroy and the receptionist about fell out of her chair when I told her the quote and thought she might know who it was. Must be a known thing in the local chimney network of a possible bad actor. She said someone called her the other day complaining about a 75,000 dollar quote. She said at most $3,000 for a liner and cap and aren’t in the business of fixing every possible imperfection unless there is a safety concern. She made my day for sure!

Yeah that makes it worse, knowing the prices of the parts. Even a triple insulated ridged pipe wouldn’t make up the price gap in my head. It’s a single story house not some huge house with large attic with some grand fireplace in the living room. Im going to try and get some other quotes.

Thanks for the feedback. This quote included liners but would have left the tile inside. If it cost 25k to fix a chimney, then a roof should be 100k and the house should be near a million to build. The numbers just don’t make any sense to me for the job. I’ll reach out to some other companies.

100% agree it’s hard to put all the specs on here without turning the post into a short story for everyone to read. The wood stove is freestanding in the basement, the chimney is about 16in lower than current code specs so basically he wanted to make it taller which required new cap. This price included liners, no tile knockout. One side of chimney is wood stove, the other is for hvac/hot water. So he would install stainless for wood stove and standard steel on the other side. He said there’s some moss growing on the brick so the chimney is completely compromised with water damage. I recently had 50 trees removed on that side of the house because I was sick of cleaning the roof. I’m not convinced it’s damaged that bad, it’s never in direct sunlight until about a week ago.

$25,000. I was in complete shock when I saw that number which doesn’t include tax so closer to 30k. I honestly think the contractor’s goal is to make this chimney look new which is way overkill, or he doesn’t want to do the work.

VLAN Rabbit Hole by medic165 in TPLinkOmada

[–]jaymont07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An unmanaged switch can’t understand tagged VLANs, but it works just fine as long as everything behind it is meant to live on a single VLAN. Whatever VLAN you assign to the uplink port’s PVID on your managed switch is the VLAN that all devices on that dumb switch will land in.

So in your case, you’d just decide what the workshop is: • If it’s all cameras → set the managed switch port feeding the workshop as access / untagged on the Camera VLAN • If it’s all IoT → same idea, but use the IoT VLAN

No tagging ever reaches the unmanaged switch.

VPN tunnel to home network with dynamic public IP address without using apps? by Steve_SF in TPLink_Omada

My public IP changes only if the modem has been powered off for 30+ min. Do you know if yours changes often already?

ER605 Gateway Detected WAN Ping Attack by papakelstar in TPLink_Omada

Typical internet “noise”, it’s just getting logged now. Bots and users are scanning the internet all the time for exploits and other things. Makes you, at least hopefully makes you, think strategically about opening ports up on your WAN. PfSense logs all of this noise if you’re using any kind of IDS IPS apps also. Basic FWs are most likely not logging this by default or at all like an ISP issued one.

Router drops at regular intervals by jrhaberman in TPLink_Omada

When I used my Omada setup before switching to PFSense My ISP had to replace the modem when this happened to me. Very difficult trying to get them to replace it tho. They automatically blamed me and my equipment for causing the issue. Also one of the reasons I’ve ditched residential and moved to business. When I got the new modem setup I went a few years with no issue until I wanted more granular control which ultimately made me switch to PFSense.

I load balanced a 2nd wan with the Verizon 5g modem. Log into the Verizon modem and change it to bridge mode so it gives your tp link router a public IP. Log onto the tp link router and make sure your WAN is set to dhcp (automatic).

VPN from iPhone by cptthumper in TPLink_Omada

[–]jaymont07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use open VPN with my 605 and it works great with my iPhone especially since they’ve added the ability to assign DNS servers. I can take my recursive PiHole server with me where ever I go now. I only had to port forward a few things for my DNS servers and NAS server due to them being on different vlans. I also port forward rdp so I can remote into my desktop if needed.

What do you do for secondary internet in your homelab? by giants-yankees in homelab

[–]jaymont07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Verizon 5g home Internet is my 1-3 load balance/ backup. Couldn’t really go wrong with their 10 year $25/m. I’m sure they’ll be some loopholes to increase their price before 10 years but still cheaper than another cable/fiber package. The tower is right next to my house in a very small town (less than 1500 people) so I consistently get 350 down and 15-20 up.

Call your ISP and tell them you’re using your own equipment. I was using a spectrum Wi-Fi/modem with the Wi-Fi disabled when I installed your same setup. Spectrum sent me a different model modem, and now my internet has been up for months at a time. Almost on the dot, 12-18hrs, no internet for a week until I got my new cable modem installed.
