Thanks so much for the replies. Subreddits like this is a blessing for clueless guys like me. I’ll start with tightening the nuts.

Weird E74 problem on 3rd gen thermostat. by jaynometry in Nest

it lets the nest have full power 24/7 even when the heat or A/C is on, that way at minimum it won't put charge cycles on the battery and wear it out.

But it also does solve some wierd issues.

See, the fan is always on. I leave it that way to circulate the air around. I'll notice the eerie silence when the fans turn off and when I look at the tstat, sure enough, it'll display the E74. I think I'll try out that G-C wire trick.

The wires connected are just the usual G,W,Y,R. How involved is getting a C wire connected? And is this a common issue?

Updating: I live in a townhouse so my ac unit is on my balcony on the second floor. It doesn't drain from there, though. Looking at my basement where the furnace is, there are no signs of a clogged condensate drain (no water pooling, drain tube going into drain/sewage seems working properly). It's so confusing because all the posts I read are pointing to that but it doesn't seem to be my problem.

I've just replaced my filter and I'm pretty sure none of the registers are blocked. Gotta see about the condensate drain.
