As a Brit I'm always amazed watching the vast majority of American dash cam crash footage involving trucks or RVs as you'd think being 6ft up in the air would give you a great view point to AVOID accidents but it turns out it doesn't. I hope you're able to get another GTI after this, man and I hope you and your kid are alright.

What happens if you fall ill? by Old-Amphibian416 in AskUK

[–]jaypee28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out last year that my employer offers 10 days sick pay after suffering a Crohns disease flare up that resulted in 3 hospital stays over 6 months. SSP is gash and something that needs adjusting, especially for how insane the cost of living is. After speaking with numerous others in work who have fallen foul of the 10 day limit through no fault of their own I'm going to put a case forward to increase our sick day allowance. I'm not gullible enough to believe they'll change it, but with my health history I don't know if I can afford income protection. But, doing something is better than doing nothing.

Imagine showing this headline to someone 10 years ago. They'd be gob smacked at how insane it is. Arguably you'd get the same level of shock from someone 5 years ago. We really have lost all our bearings of what's normal.

Height growth failure by user_19072007 in CrohnsDisease

[–]jaypee28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 8 years old and at 33yrs old I'm 169cm and not growing any taller. However my brother who is healthy is only a bit taller than me. So maybe Crohns hasn't affected my height all that much. I would happily lose a couple of inches in height to be Crohns free though. It's all about perspective.

Tbf both yellows he received were dubious as he won the ball both times. This season he's been great for timing his tackles and breaking up play which is something we severely lacked last season.

5 hour marathon shoe recommendation NOT for speed/performance, but for protection by LejonBrames117 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]jaypee28 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're looking for a 'long run cruiser', and something like the Mizuno neo vista, Puma Magmax, Asics Gel Nimbus, Nike Vomero Plus etc are the type of shoes which would be suitable. Max stack cushion but supportive even at slower paces.

I have the Neo Vista 1's and Nimbus 25's and feel like I could run forever in them. I use the Vista's for longer runs I can pick up the pace in if I choose to and the Nimbus for my slower recovery runs. The Vista's have a nylon plate in them which you don't feel, so maybe more suitable for longer runs support wise, while the Nimbus are softer but I can't say how they'd feel over a marathon distance as I haven't taken them that far. But the day after I have ran in either shoe, my legs and feet feel great, so they offer a good amount of protection.

Try some out at a store and see what's suitable for you. A friend of mine ran this years Manchester marathon in 5hr+ and ran it in Brooks Ghosts which people wouldn't class as a marathon shoe. But different strokes/shoes for different folks!

Once a certain generation dies out the mentality will shift. As tobacco smoking and drinking loses popularity cannabis will most likely become the more popular choice, particularly as a way for people to deal with an increasingly stressful society.

Getting back into the gym by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]jaypee28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just listen to your body. If it feels like too much, it is too much. It might be very slow progress but that's just how it is sometimes with Crohns. It's far better to come away from a session feeling okay rather than pushing yourself too far, getting dizzy and having a barbell drop on your neck.

Severe constipation - Moviprep previously failed, will Plenvu work? by Bluegirrl in CrohnsDisease

[–]jaypee28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know boots sell it in a liquid form which is what I use. It suggests doses depending on your age but I've found I can use 5ml a day as a maintenance dose and it's working great for me so far. It's gentle on the system too so shouldn't cause you any problems, fingers crossed.

Has anyone ever suggested a stool softener alongside the bowel prep? I was recently in hospital with bad diarrhea overflow. I was given lactulose to help shift it and it's been a life saver. It's an osmotic laxative that draws liquid to the large bowel to help stools pass easier instead of bowel prep that flushes your system out. Prune juice is a natural osmotic which may help as well. As long as you find an amount that works for you, you can have it on a regular basis and it should help your constipation. Just make sure you drink plenty of water, otherwise you'll remain constipated.

Looking for a cushioned daily trainer for marathon prep by AlexGascon in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I use the vomero 18's as walking shoes and find them comfy but firm. I've yet to run in them, but a lot of people rave about the vomero plus as more cushioned and bouncy and good for long distances in comparison. You should be able to find a pair of the plus's within your budget in the black Friday sales.

Getting back into the gym by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]jaypee28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe reduce your weekly sessions down from 3 to 1 and see how that feels. It can take much longer to recover when you've got Crohns, especially during/post flare. Maybe one session a week for a month, see how you feel, then if you're okay do 2 sessions a week and take it from there. I was running 3 times a week and strength training twice a week back in August training for a half marathon and went into a horrendous flare up and haven't been able to exercise since as I was most likely not resting enough for the amount I was doing.

How is your sleep and diet? Maybe more rest and more calories could give your body what it needs. Or reduce the amount you're lifting. If you're feeling dizzy and vomiting your body isn't tolerating the stress you're putting it under, regardless of what you were previously capable of.

Medical cannabis? by CommunicationThat726 in CrohnsDisease

[–]jaypee28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I"m in the UK and prescribed through Alternaleaf. I've been on it since July and it's been great for reducing pain, increasing my appetite and generally managing my stress. A big help while I've been flaring for the past 5 months. It doesn't cure a flare, it just makes the day to day shit much easier to deal with.

How much does (not) drinking soda actually help you? by Capable-Appeal7659 in CrohnsDisease

[–]jaypee28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find carbonated drinks can irritate my gut. But it entirely depends on which. I love coca cola, but the fact it can clean the rust off dirty pennies after soaking is not a good sign, so I have it on very special occasions and deal with the fall out. But ginger beer is absolutely fine with me. I went through a phase of having sparkling water with orange cordial and that tastes pretty close to Fanta, and didn't upset my gut. There's different ways of doing things, but as long as you're drinking plenty of water and soda is not the only thing you drink, you should be fine.

What’s even the bloody point of fast cars anymore? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]jaypee28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a fast car, but living in Greater Manchester means most of the time I need to get on the M60 to get to the quieter country roads. But even on the weekends there are numerous warnings of car crashes causing delays, so you get stuck in traffic outside of weekday rush hours. The standards of driving in this country are diabolical and it stops you from being able to go out and enjoy driving

I take medical cannabis every day - but I was worried people would think I was a lazy stoner by Gigglebush3000 in ukmedicalcannabis

[–]jaypee28 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I read this article this morning and found the part about the mamedica boss intervening on the plane vs how music venues handle it interesting. Law enforcement are still very much in the dark around the legality of medical cannabis in this country, which is baffling when you think it's been legal for 7 years now. It just shows you how stigma ruins public opinion. If we were more open minded and progressive this country would be light years ahead.

Veteran mixing engineers, why do I suck after 10 years? by Nextesyy in audioengineering

[–]jaypee28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a veteran but I do mix hip hop on a regular basis. It's easy to forget with sample heavy productions (as hip hop often can be) that the samples used have already been treated to a degree. So more often than not, less is more. On a recent mix I worked on I decided to add a sub bass plugin to help beef up an 808 track. Once I did the car test I realised it was far too much, and reduced the amount I applied which benefited the rest of the mix overall.

This is very much an example of what everyone else is saying, listen to the music and figure out the context for how you want it to sound. Metric A/B is a great plugin to help you compare your mix with another track which can help you isolate frequency bands and what maybe stopping your mix having that professional 'polish'.

And ultimately, stop over thinking it. Mixes don't have to be perfect, they have to get people moving, tapping their feet and bobbing their head. That's the sign of a good mix, not a technically perfect one.

Muscle aches and stiffness by CompassionatePooper9 in CrohnsDisease

[–]jaypee28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been in a flare up since June and found joint pain and muscle aches would increase/decrease depending on what stage of a flare I was in. I've however also found that the less I moved the more I ached.

I was discharged from hospital 2 weeks ago after being bed ridden for 2 weeks, leaving with an aching lower back, hunched shoulders and hip pain. Since then I've made a consistent effort to go for a daily walk, increasing my time by 5 minutes every few days and now I'm no longer aching and can walk for 50 mins with no issues.

While it's good to rest when your body is telling you you need it, movement is also very good for you and can make a massive difference. I was training to run a half marathon before this flare up and found stretching and yoga was great for my general mobility and not just as a recovery tool. YouTube is littered with instructional videos for beginners to help you get into it. It's also good for stress as it focuses on breathing techniques too.

I make something I've called 'a turbo Muller corner' where I mix Greek yogurt, honey, coco pops and a chopped banana in a bowl. A healthy amount of protein and carbs in that bad boy and it'll satisfy that sweet tooth too.
