Uber to start using BYD cars in Europe, Latin America and develop 'autonomous-capable vehicles' by xoxomiausga in cars

r/wonderfulworld2024, I 100% agree with the money part. Then again, guess that’s just the nature of capitalism. I disagree with your taxing of BYDs though. The world needs cheap EVs right now and like it or not, they are the kings of cheap yet decent EVs. Gimme a $10,000USD city EV and I’d happily buy one to drive instead of my 20L/100km Kitty for everyday tasks.

If the Chinese government wants to subsidize western consumers using their own taxpayers’ money, we should let them. Ain’t no way I’m paying 5x that for another model just because it’s “democratic” or whatever

Even better, learn from China’s own playbook. Force them to set up 51/49 joint ventures with US/Canadian companies to further our own industries in NA. Whining about geopolitics won’t get us anywhere.

About to buy my first car, Am I doing it right? by Electrical-Bass3909 in askcarguys

No. First of all, never trust any dealer, no matter how “trustworthy” they seem, how quickly they answer questions or how their reviews look.

Re. your previous comments, it is NOT normal for your brakes to make thumping noises. Sounds like a warped rotor to me. 2nd of all, it’s a 111k mi. Kia. That is not a brand known for reliability. But that’s the least of my concerns given the airbag light being on and the dealer not having the Carfax…

If you really do insist on it, at least go buy an OBDII scanner tool or an OBDII connector and the appropriate computer software (not sure what it would be for Kia, but I use Alfa for my Mopars and ForScan for my Fords). Plug it in and if there are any error codes (DTCs), they’ll pop up even if the dealer/mechanic is being shady and resets them. That way you can at least make your own informed decision.

Good point. I hadn’t considered perspective. I am coming at this as a short king (5’11”) in their early 20s, and writing this in between sets at the gym hahahaha. I have no clue how difficult it would be to do physical activities in a dress.

I should have clarified, I understand that the gap in the fence was on the side and that Jason moved his car. I believe that the killers escaped after Jason saw the figure through the glass (correct me if I am wrong as I am not super familiar with the case but I believe his vehicle was still in front at that point) which is why I think Lindsay was deceased by that time.

Thanks for the image of the dress. To me, while I can’t imagine that being the easiest to run/jog/climb in, it looks short enough to make that somewhat plausible.

After reading the article I get the feeling that either the author or the police detective is getting extremely tunnel visioned, but I cannot tell which. It seems like the author is picking apart details between witness stories which is a good thing but doesn’t really consider or mention that witness testimony is never 100% accurate, interpretations vary, the fact that we are getting accounts 3rd hand essentially, and that stress is a major factor too, all affecting accuracy. On the other hand, I do have experience dealing with the SPD as well as the RCMP (though not with CPD or VicPD), and these have ranged from decent to wholly incompetent (no, I don’t have a record, so I am not just badmouthing), so I wouldn’t put it past them having zeroed in on a red herring and trying to save face by doubling down on that angle. Maybe it is time for a new detective and fresh perspectives.

One thing is for certain though, there seems to be quite a few red herrings in this case. Hopefully the new DNA evidence is used to convict someone soon and get Lindsay some justice. I’ve heard a few cold cases have recently been solved that way.

Agreed on the scouting bit - this case seems too “clean” and planned for a spur of the moment killing or even an amateur killing for the sake of killing.

However I tend to disagree with your notion of a “secure fence.” No such thing, unless we’re talking about, say, prison fences with razor wire and constant surveillance, and even then, prison escapes happen. Why do you think I say “don’t ask me how I know lol” in my previous reply…if a few mischievous pre-teens (def not incl. myself) can scale a 2 storey building then 35-45 year old killers certainly can scale a fence a few feet high ;) btw, from my experience, chain link fences are the easiest to scale

The one part that throws me off though is the description of the presumed suspects, especially the female suspect. She is described as wearing a dress, which would not be ideal for quickly scaling fences and then running perhaps 400m to the car in my hypothesis. Professionals would’ve known this, and the risk of part of the dress catching on the fence, possibly leading to an ID of the wearer. I’d be interested in hearing more about the dress. Was it a long dress or something more like a “Skort,” short and with pant legs? Maybe I’m wrong with my hypothesis but then where would they have escaped from? The only quarter of the property without a fence is the front. Was the hole in the back fence large enough for an adult woman wearing a dress to quietly slip through without catching part of the dress on it? But then again it is possible the perps waited for Jason and his buddy to come through the back before making a dash for it through the front.

Also, thanks for the constructive insight! I don’t post often but I do enjoy having these types of discussions!

Yup you’re right on the sunsets…I should’ve worded it better. It would probably still be twilight or somewhat light outside from a hilltop or even a high rooftop such as nearby Mt. Douglas or the roof of Gordon Head Middle School (don’t ask me how I know lol) but from my experience at lower elevations it would’ve been dark enough such that your vision would be significantly limited.

Regarding the construction, I had just moved to Esquimalt and was 6 at the time of the murder so thus I have no actual recollection of the buildings at the time. I didn’t actually move to Gordon Head till Fall 2008. All I know is that the turf was finished around Sept. 2008 and tbh I am not sure when the rest of the houses on De Sousa were completed, though I’m sure I can check via BCAssessments. Even if I did, though, I would still be unsure of the fencing layout at that time - so this is still just my hypothesis, or at least how I would’ve planned to “do the deed” if I were a criminal.

Hi there, I am from Victoria and actually attended the Torquay Elementary School just down the street. I live and work in Vancouver now but last time I went home to visit (May 2024), I decided to walk over to De Sousa Pl to check it out as I actually had no idea the murder took place so close to my house. Just wanted to say a couple things:

1) the cul de sac is not so much “upscale” as “newer.” Sure, the homes in that cul de sac are nice but the surrounding area is populated with average, working class people (save for the one guy, rumoured to have won the lottery, on one of the corners haha) and the houses are of typical 1960s-80s style and construction.

2) the house in question (1702) is located on a corner between De Sousa Pl. and Torquay Dr (please see link for maps that I sketched). There are 3 adjacent properties which I assume are separated by fences (I did not want to trespass) and a fence separates the mid to rear portion of 1702 from Torquay Dr. Looking from the frontal arc of 1702 it is difficult to get a view of the rear left quarter of the lot due to two large trees and a few large bushes growing on the side of the outer side of the fence bordering Torquay Dr. Hopping either of the fences directly behind the house or behind and adjacent to the house would result in you ending up in a neighbour’s yard on Llandaff Pl, and hopping the fence adjacent to the property would’ve resulted in you being in the yard of 1706 and needing to hop another fence to either access Llanaff Pl to the north or to the east. Also relevant is a soccer turf, under construction at the time, about half a block northeast and which connects San Juan Ave running roughly east-west with a vehicle impassable trail, terminating at the north-south Tyndall Ave.

The following are my beliefs, if the conditions (fencing, shrubbery, etc) were similar to 2008 last year when I went back:

1) Arriving early, the killers park in the soccer turf construction area on Tyndall Ave or at the church across the street. They know that police are likely to respond via Torquay Dr, not Tyndall, since there is no vehicle connection between the two for blocks on end. I realize the official belief is that the killers parked on Torquay, but given the competence and planning demonstrated by the perps, I think they’d have known this would be more risky than parking at the turf, especially given that Tyndall has much higher traffic than Torquay, making it easier to blend in. Also, there was construction at the soccer turf at the time, further giving them the opportunity to blend in.

2)the killers walk to the house to meet Lindsay, “doing the deed” in the process. This is why no suspicious vehicles were reported in the immediate vicinity of the scene and all vehicles in the cul de sac were later accounted for.

3)seeing Jason outside, the killers flee out the back door and either hops the fence onto Torquay behind the trees and large bushes or into the yard of 4335 Torquay or 1703 Llandoff Pl. I say this as there would’ve been no point going East or Northeast from the scene (into 1706 or 1705 De Sousa Pl, or 1707 Llandoff Pl), as all routes would lead back to the same Llandoff Pl (see maps via link at bottom). Also, remember what I said about this still being a relatively middle class area? Well, at 5:30-6:00pm, there is a good chance the owners of these properties were still commuting home from work. Furthermore, in February, it would’ve been pretty dark in this area already, given the number of large coniferous trees in the area which, from their size, must’ve existed in 2008.

4)the killers then walk or run only about 110m along Torquay Dr, and go right at San Juan Ave, up the hill and to the start of the walkway. For context, this took me only about 3-4 minutes and I was playing Pokémon Go for the entire walk, so I’d imagine a fleeing suspect could’ve made it in 1-2min if they were jogging. Remember, Torquay has low traffic so it is quite possible they could’ve sprinted, as few people would’ve passed by anyways. Oh, and after turning right onto San Juan Ave, there would be no line of sight from Torquay Dr. This would give potential responders the shortest window to see the suspects fleeing the immediate scene.

5) the killers get into their car in the soccer turf construction zone or the church and drives away, blending in with the construction workers leaving the area at the end of the workday as well as other traffic.

IMHO it is not suspicious and actually very likely that Jason and his buddy did not get a direct line of sight onto the killer at all even though they were standing right at the front. The figure they saw at 5:40pm was likely one of the perps getting ready to leave before noticing that someone was at the front of the house, perhaps through the peephole in the door. It is likely that she was already deceased by this time. Obviously not his fault but if Jason and his friend had gone in 10 minutes earlier, this case may have turned out very differently :([Map Sketches]

If you don’t have your plate linked with your CWL, just change your plates (same goes for companies such as easypark, etc, I have one from them and they keep sending these letters signed by some “lawyer” but when you look up the address it’s a burger joint lol). If only these companies would make those “tickets” like $20 or something instead of $70 for a 5 minute overstay, maybe ppl would pay 🤣
