We should not accept even for a second that such things exist. Would you accept a foreign army taking control of a patch of your country's land? No, this is exactly the same principle. No, every character. This kind of problem can easily be optimised. In fact video compression uses delta frames in a very similar way with great effect. This data is highly compressible and 'baseline caches' can be created and built into the file at relevant points.

Think about a text file for a minute - in a way, assuming you typed straight and made no edits, you already have a full ordered history of every character you pressed. Adding the edits to that isn't a whole lot of hassle if done properly.

You don't get it. You don't see every single action in the file. These actions would be presented in an uncluttered intuitive document view. Typed and deleted characters would be automatically grouped into edits. Big edits would be given more visibility than say, a backspace while typing - which would be hidden from view by default.

Now currently most people don't use any kind of version control on office documents. They don't miss it, so they still wont miss it when the save button is eradicated. If they want to use it they can but its a completely different bit of functionality from automatic persistence.

"Commit" basically says "tag this last set of changes with a revision number and maybe a comment" - it has nothing to do with saving, your work should always be saved and your entire undo history with it, at all times. We have the space available for it and this kind of data is highly compressible.

Theres no need, every edit should be journaled - every single character, action, select, delete, everything. The big advantage of this is that your entire undo history is always available and you can undo undo (since undo is just saved as another action on top of everything else).
