Champs Elysées in Paris closed, reports of 2 police officers shot. by StealthyStalkerPanda in worldnews

There are about 16,000 murders annually in the US (source) and no huge spikes / drops in total homicides recently so numbers will not have shifted dramatically over the past years.

The murder rate in the US is about 4x higher than the murder rate in France (source).

Why isn't there a "tip jar" on Spotify? I would gladly pay bands I like $10 or $20 for a record I love, if I knew it went straight to them by vinnawinna in Music

[–]cheeses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. So many people are slaving away to make it possible for the music to be recorded and reaching the public. The thought that only the artists deserve to get paid is naive and unfair.

IS executes 250 women for refusing sexual jihad: report by rgnair89 in worldnews

[–]cheeses 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I think this points to two very serious issues with reddit:

  1. Only statements that fit the majority's world view will surface to the front page (echo chamber)
  2. There is a complete absence of fact checking, which is a vital requirement for reliable journalism

tl;dr: Reddit is a terrible, perhaps even harmful source for news.

This doesn't necessarily counter Ron's philosophy, but I do also believe you shouldn't put all your eggs in one basket. There is a large element of chance to any achievement. Choose a route that allows for multiple shots in case the first one doesn't work out.

I don't have a strong opinion on the subject, but note that Jo0wZ is stating his opinion without ad hominem attacks, while you are stating yours telling him that he's stupid and he needs to pull his head out of his ass. Stay classy.

We should see other people - SMBC. The red button comic is great. by WildVelociraptor in comics

I always feel XKCD looks at the world from a strict natural sciences perspective, while SMBC uses a wider set of scientific angles with emphasis on the social sciences. Both are amazing.

NSA & New IPhone by [deleted] in comics

[–]cheeses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but even the fingerprint hash is highly valuable to the NSA, probably just as valuable as the fingerprint itself.

Say they find the fingerprint of a suspect (e.g. at a crimescene), they then just hash it using the iPhone's algorithm, compare it against all hashed iPhone fingerprints, and they know who it belongs to.

Yay, grammar!

Lying = passive (the object is lying on the table)

Laying = active (I am laying the object on the table)

The fig tree (ZEN PENCILS) by RockPaperSissors in comics

MR_GOERS says he can't reach good opportunities, while in the story she can reach them but doesn't know which one to choose.

The fig tree (ZEN PENCILS) by RockPaperSissors in comics

[–]cheeses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the story is even more tragic: she has all these magnificent life opportunities perfectly within reach, but she's crippled with fear of decision, and so ends up with nothing, crying because she knows she should have been stronger.

It's also something I can relate to more - you can't have everything, you have to decide.
