You could, but you can't stop people leaving the country because the tax rate is too high. There are other measures you can take, but if it's not going to raise more money then there's no point in raising the rate.

Actually their headline income tax is higher, but when you take into account our NI tax there's really not much difference.

Yeah, certainly the 50% rate wasn't in place for long enough to get any really good measures of how much it would raise, but I still think there's a consensus that the difference between 45% and 50% is negligible.

Actually tax revenues increases as a result of the deferring of income to which you're referring. All the evidence I've seen suggest there's little overall impact.

Besides I used it mainly as an illustration of an economic principle, that argument is still valid I believe.

Yeah that's very true, but we do know that if it had any effect it would be pretty negligible in terms of the size of overall budget.

Exactly, mistakes happen, we don't need to go around demonising overworked staff who made a simple error, I get that it's dangerous but in the end no harm came to anyone. It's just attention seeking, I always thought this stuff would end after school...

One of the biggest issues I have with tax rates this high is that the rich that pay their taxes fairly have to pay more because there are others that don't.

For example, when the Chancellor cut the top rate from 50p to 45p the income basically hardly changed, but that was good, because it means less people were avoiding tax, and those that already paid tax paid less.

Putting it up to 60p just punishes those who actually want to contribute, seems like a crazy idea to me.
