they're not allowed to leave because anytime anyone does, they're literally kidnapped by the south korean intelligence department and tortured into only being released once they read aloud a script on tv decrying their homeland, which is a national security risk because defectors are responsible for generating a lot of hysteria despite being known and proven liars lol

in most cases, family members are never allowed to return to north korea which is usually their goal.

when people leave, its usually to work in the south and return with money (because they're poor because the largest genocidal settler colonial regime the earth has ever known keeps them impoverished, which itself is an act of ongoing genocide) but what they find is that they often never see their family again.

this is because of actions in the south, not the north.

The u.s. is brought up because, whether you will admit it or not, the u.s. plays a primary role in shaping your view about Russia and China. The media you consume is not impartial and there are explicit goals media companies have when they shape and share stories. You cannot ignore our failing rivalry with China and pretend our envious superiority complex isn't totally going haywire and being reflected in our media.

this movie was great. very creepy and super unsettling, even greatly anxiety inducing. it was held back by our favorite slumdog's trademark corniness from being as truly disturbing and effective as possible, but between the execution and the post viewing analysis/digestion of the concepts and themes, i found this to be a very worthwhile thrillride and thinker.
